My wife has a conference in Kona from 3/20 to 3/23. What would be the best DIY 4 day hunt during that time. We plan to spearfish once she is finished with work.

If you're looking for DIY, maybe unit E. Puu Anahulu and Kipuka Ainahou http://dlnr.hawaii.gov/huntered/files/2013/05/MammalHuntingRegs_Chap123.pdf

I would call DLNR for updated info.

Hopefully RD808 chimes in as he's from the Big Island.

Well, Big Island only offers good archery hunting on the weekends and state holidays. From the time you come over, looks like the only day you can hunt is March 20th. If you plan to hunt Puu Anahulu you will need to buy tags. Kipuka Ainahou is free....but probably the hardest area to hunt in hawaii.

Any questions let me know

Looking at the regs. it seems like there are a number of areas that are open during the week. Is that not the case? Are they too far to travel to?

Maybe I should have been a little more specific.

The areas that you are looking at that are open are rifle areas. You can hunt there with your bow, you would just need to wear orange. Very slim chance you will get up on something. Depends how far you like to walk you might be able to find something but the animals are very smart in our rifle areas.

Really up to you on what areas you would like to try. Just remember NO CAMPING in the hunting areas.....so day trips are the only way to do it here.

Weekend hunting in archery areas is your best bet. You will see animals and you will be able to go on multiple stalks. Some of the rifle areas hold some really good pigs, but it would be pretty challenging.
