Aparently I am the only person in the world that doesn't know what a deer funnel is. After you all quit laughing could someone please describe to me what composes a funnel? By the way I've taken over 30 whitetail bucks and approx 20 blacktails plus other numerous heads of big game and never heard the term before. Thanks and have a good laugh.

If you took all that game you musta been in em plenty of times. To me it refers to any sort of geography or cover that "Funnels" game through a narrowing portion.Just picture a funnel from the side and imagine pouring a mess of deer through it. Where would they all go?An hour glass is another good wy to picture it.The only problem is the deer dont always know this fact.

A funnel can be many things. Generally it speaks of a travel area that concentrates the deer to pass through an area. It can be a saddle between ridges, a brushy area along a creek that runs between open fields that connects to wooded area, a fenceline with cover along it between pastures, etc. A travel route that brings them into a more confined area so you have a better chance at seeing higher numbers of animals in bow range.

A funnel is basically "anything" that the deer use for cover and concealment moving to or from. A hedgerow, a ridge, a highpoint between swamps. All depends on terrain.

6X5 like said above, you have probably been huntin them but never knew the term, bottleneck is a term we use alot around here for the same thing.. in flat land it can be a few trees down with a gap between a couple of them or a place in a wood lot where the trees narrow down between fields, or a place where a fence is down.. in the mountians it can be a creek coming against a hillside or a bench that narrows down. Its about all I hunt, I dont hunt feed trees that much anymore and try to find that bottleneck between feed and bedding...

bottleneck,pinchpoint,funnel.....goes by lots of names.Sounds like you've hunted them plenty just didn't realize there was a name for it.

Around here, where we have TONS of pine trees, there's drainage ditches that run thru them.Alot of those drainages have hardwoods along them, these are really good "funnels" that narrow down deer movement between those 1000's of acres of pines.

Other good funnels not mentioned are creek, fence and road crossings.

Seriously, sometimes you can find a funnel in a funnel. Or the best, a funnel in a funnel in a funnel. I get made fun of on that one!

The classic funnel to me is a strip of woods (could be 100 yds wide or wider)connecting two patches of timber. In that strip is a terrain feature that will tighten the funnel, such as steep terrain or an easy walking creek. If a fallen tree, briar patch or something narrows the creek down even further, there's your funnel in a funnel in a funnel [Smile]

OK you guys got me! Preety much all I ever hunt is FUNNELS!!!!! Also to correct any errors all my deer were not taken with a bow. Quite a few but I can't remember how many with muzzle loader, shotgun, rifle, handgun and trad bow. Thanks for not whipping up on me for my ignorance. If I didn't ask it would have driven me nuts not knowing.Actually now that I think about it why would anyone hunt anything but funnels?
