ok first of all ia have never vbeen to texas me and jds3(from the gang) are going in jan/feb for a javelina hunt in odessa. my questions are are trantulas still out then and how bad are they, i hate spiders the reaon for that question, and how bad are the rattle snakes at the time of year, and my gfs brother lives in brownsville and has anybod ever hunted or heard of negeil, he says there kinda like a wild horse or something liket that i probably misspelled it but if you know what they are or have a pic of them please share

First, you will not see any trantulas that time of year. I grew up around Odessa and you might see one all summer long, they will not bother you.
Snakes will be dened up at that time of year.
Your girl frieds bro is talking about nilgi and most of those will be on high fence ranches or private ranches and a very expensive hunt. They are a type of African/Indian antelope(forget which country they are from)

Danny is right No snakes out in Odessa in Jan. & Feb(unless you have a series of warm days, you might stumble on one sunning) but if you hunt in Brownsville there will be snakes out during Jan. & Feb. most likley.David

I've lived and hunted in Texas all my life. Try as I might, I can't remember the last time I even saw a tarantula. I wouldn't worry about them. However, since you hate them, I'd be more worried about you hurting yourself thinking about them than I would be about you even seeing one that time of the year.... Same goes for ol' Joe Noshoulders......

I spend alot of time exploring and bughunting with my kids. We probably see 25 or so tarantualas a year.......they are pretty harmless to humans, bite is is like a bee sting and you have to try hard to get bit, they are easy to see and easy to avoid. it's the brown recluse you have to worry about.... I see them all summer long up here in Mckinney. My son and I have some in aquariums. We pick them up and they have not bitten. Just to add, if you want a Nilgai hunt in Texas. You can put in for a draw tag (Archery) for the Lower Rio Grande National Wildlife Refuge. This is through the Federal Government and not the State. Many have escaped from the King Ranch over the years and they are running around on the refuge. This is actually a Whitetail hunt however you can take Nilgai if you see them. These animals are an Antelope native to India.

In Texas that time of year the weather can be extremely variable. Warm one day.....below freezing the next. You could easily experience a warm snap that time of year and have temperatures in the high 80's or even low 90's in which case you would need to keep a look out for rattlesnakes in the midday.....albeit they will be very sluggish and lathargic.
See lots of tarantulas in the spring and summer. In fact I catch them and feed them to my 2 pet skunks. Never have seen one that time of year.

A good product to take with you in your pack is a Sawyer "the extractor" first aid kit.It has four suction cups which will suck out the poison out for stings and bites(use it for rattlesnake bites also).You should not need it that time of the year, but it is good anywhere, anytime. We have fire ants bad and if you get stung by serval of them, take some mouthwash with you and splash it on the bites and they will stop itching real fast. The old rattlesnake men tell us if bitten, take a liter of Dr. Pepper, cut the top off and soak the bite in it until you can get to the hospital. Good hunting! Ken
