I have a RER LX that I'm very proud of and I'm
wondering when the concept of a near center shelf and a reflex/deflex design was invented.

Probably about mid to late 1950's would be my guess, maybe a little sooner?

Back then they called that style of bow a "semi-recurve" instead of a R/D longbow or a "hybrid longbow" like they are usually referred as these days.

Many companies and bowyers back then made this type of bow.

From a lot of the old advertisements I've seen, these types of bows seemed to be advertised and priced as more of an "intermediate or beginners bow" and usually cost a little less than most of their recurve counterparts.

Some of the old timers around here could probably give you a little more insight on them but these types of bows are really not anything "new".

A little sooner would be my guess [Wink] Some 4000 years sooner.
A very pronounced r/d design was USED by the old egyptians, (the ones that built pyramids..) Some 30 or more found near pristine in tombs from the time. LAminatged wood, or lam. wood and sinew, glued w. milk glue.
The woods in some of these bows suggest they were obtained from Syria, suggesting some very early arms trade. Dunno who invented it or when.
