I am interested in finding small streams or rivers I can deer hunt and bass fish from a jon boat or canoe. Prefer there be no portages (bad knees). If anyone knows of small streams with bass flowing thru state or national forest property open to public bow hunting I would appreciate the info. I don't want any of your "secret honey holes". I just want some quiet time this fall to fish and be in the woods. Getting a shot at a deer would be nice but it is not of critical importance to bring home venison. I live in Alabama but I will travel almost anywhere east of the Mississippi for the right river.

Hmmm. The Buffalo in AR, the Eleven Point, the Current or the North Fork of the White in MO. All are National Scenic Rivers or run through National Forests or Wilderness areas. Let me know if you get up this way.

The Ocmulgee River as well as the Altamaha have excellent public hunting and great fishing.Let me know when you wanna come and I`ll get you lined up.RC

I hesitate to mention it, but there are numerous rivers in the Ozark National Forest and Ouchita National forest where you can put in at one road crossing, float to another, enjoy excellent smallmouth fishing and hunting the whole way (in October), and stand a good chance of not seeing another human being. But, it's not east of Mississippi, obviously. Beautiful country though, with excellent hunting and fishing. There are the two or three "famous" rivers (Buffalo, Crooked Creek) in the area, but there are lots of lesser known rivers with equal quility fishing and many fewer people. I am not going to name specific rivers, but any state or county map will show all you need.

If you are interested in something close by. The Leaf River south of Hattiesburg, MS passes through the DeSoto National Forest which allows public hunting and the MDWFP has been releasing Bass into the area streams and rivers for several years now. The Black Creek is another stream that you could fish and hunt. Black Creek feeds into the Leaf and the Leaf feeds into the Pascagoula River and all are good for hunting and fishing. Deer archery season will open around October 15 in the southern zone. These are great streams for canoeing. If you want a good reference book, check out Canoeing Mississippi by Ernest Herndon. It will give very detailed info on pretty much every stream and river in MS with put in and take out points. If you need more info let me know. Drew

You hve the Flint river also just east of ya in Ga. You can put in at Spurl Bluff outside Thomaston Ga and float down thru the wma good hunting and good bass
