Being from Michigan, La Tuque is a 16 hour drive in the best of conditions. Having been a veteran of Bear Quest IV, I was more than ready to do the non stop solo drive again this year. When I was packing for Bear Quest IV last year, sweet wife just didn't understand. She said " I don't get it, your going to drive 16 hours, by yourself, to a place you've never been to before to hunt with a bunch of people you've never met". My answer was "Yup". After 33 years of putting up with me she knows I'm just not right. Welcome to Bear Quest.

My start for week two was uncertain. Having planned on going to La Tuque for Bear Quest V as soon as I left Bear Quest IV last year, things changed drastictly for me about three months ago. One of my top employees, who fills my roll when I'm off, sprung it on me that he and his fiance decided that June 18th would be a great day to get married. June 18th, that's the start of Bear Quest V.

It may be a little out of line to write about Brian's bear but I've known him since Junior High so he knows I'm a jerk....Brian hunted hard all week and came down to the last night. Eli and I drove him to the stand ,baited the stand and left him. We picked him up at 930 and went back to camp to get Jay's vehicle as I did not want to ride back to camp with a bloody carcass in my lap. Jay was nice enough to drive back out to the stand....easy track...20 to 30 yards. Good shot at a steep angle and passed through. Arrived back at camp around midnight so no hootin' and hollerin' as it was lights out. We got up at 5ish and were skinning at 530 saturday morning to pack out....great hunt doesn't describe it enough.

Based on my cunundrem, with my main man's nuptuils, I had no idea when I may be rolling into Bear camp. It might be Friday, maybe Saturday or heaven forbid Sunday or Monday

Kuch, Brian's bear was a dandy first bear and I'm so glad he sealed the deal on the last night. I went on the tracking team for Zack's bear that night but sure would have loved to be with Brian when you hauled that one out. Brian was a great guy to spend a week with and I hope you West Virginia boys can do it again next year

Passed on this one[probably a mistake]. I like more hair on the butt. Definitely a mistake as I came home bearless, although I shot a smaller bear with a beautiful hide that couldn,t be found with the help of 3 of BQ's best trackers,CJ,Bill and Jeff.{ Jeff thinks we left him on the trail for bug bait]. This is when CJ,aka killinstuff, found BW"s arrow. One of the best weeks of my life from the time I got hooked up with Jay and Larry in Albany till Bowdoc got in my lap Sat nite for the ride from Tom's house to the airport, dang shoulda got a picture of that! This was the 1st all traditional camp I've been in and it was a hoot.

Well after going into work on Friday the 17th at 3:30am I buttoned things up and was on the road for La Tuque at 1:30pm on Friday afternoon. If things went well, and I could stay awake and on the road, I should be in La Tuque for the changing of the guard at Lucien Gauvin by 7:30am the next morning. I'll tell you one thing for sure, being a "hick" from Michigan, heavy traffic for me is heading north on I 75 on a holiday weekend. It was nothing compared to what I'd run into in Toronto 6 hours later.
