It is but you'll have to read the fishing regs as that's about all I can tell you.

Cut and pasted in relevant part from fishing guide from Michigan DNR web 2012 edition. For your information.

Regulations for Frogs, Toads, Salamanders, Turtles, Lizards and Snakes

Amphibians and reptiles MAY NOT be shot with firearms (including spring, air, or gas propelled) or bow and arrow.

the DNR in Michigan(my home state) is run by politicians. They love to regulate, and would regulate mosquito swatting if they thought they could sell a license for it.

OK I haven't read the fishing regs in awhile (don't fish much off the ice) but isn't bowfishing regulated under spearing? Isn't frog gigging basically spearing? Doesn't this make bowfishing fall under different rules depending upon species?

Does this make Michigan's laws clear as mud? (as always)

The Regulations are clear.Page 12 2012 Michigan Fishing Guide. Frogs may be speared without the use of lights-last Saturday in May-Nov.15. Limit 10 Daily possession. Michigan Mark posted them correctly. Bowfishing regulations point out which species can be harvested and when. Frogs aren't on the list. The nice thing though, they expanded the season AND the species allowed. That's a win in Michigan no matter how you look at it!

Actually I think that "most" people in law enforcement hold themselve to a higher standard, that is why you see so many of us on tradgang.

This guy was clearly wrong, unless permitted for invasive bull frogs?

I agree with "most". If the story is accurate, sounds like that one wasn't though. Hopefully, someone can turn him in to his superiors.

In Michigan amphibians fall under the fisheries dept. their pretty clear you can take them by hand, hood net ,trap but
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10364_52261_52262-211233--,00.html

Amphibians and reptiles MAY NOT be shot with firearms (including spring, air, or gas propelled) or bow and arrow.

I don't understand why seines, traps are allowed but not bow unless because Michigan has so many endangered frogs they are worried about shooting and identifying later. Who knows.

if these guys were breaking the law, i promise is wasnt intentional. they were both very confident it was legal it was just misunderstanding on the laws, and im sure frog hunting with a bow laws isnt something the game warden reads very often and it very well may have never have came up before. no one can possible know every aspect of every law. There are just too many with to much detail.
