Thinking of making the switch to the dark side! I shot about 25 arrows last night 3 under, I'm a gapper and my groups tighten up unbelievable at both 18-20 yards. I think I'm going to stick with it for a bit and see how it goes. so here's the questions:
What are your equipment spec, bow, arrows etc? Do you shoot off the shelf? Anchor point location What is your nocking point hight? Generally where to you hold your gap at 20 yards? What's your point on?
For me: Predator Hunter 46@28 Draw 27-27.5 Arrows 2016 - 29.5 long shot off the shelf Anchor with middle finger in corner of mouth. Nock point is 1/2 inch
Need to shoot a bit more to truly figure out gaps. But they've move up considerably from my split finger shooting. I'm anticipating my point on to be close to 30 yards. With split finger my gap was just at 6 o'clock at 40 yards.

OK here goes...3 under, anchor with my middle finger in the corner of my mouth. Current set up Talltine LB 52 at 28...draw to 30 inches so 57# or thereabouts. Shooting a 2216 currently but tune anything, 31 inches, 200 grain field tip, 606 grains. I have some other bows that I shoot and set-up the same way.
Off the shelf, right handed, left eye squinted, right eye wide open. Dead on hold with the tip of the arrow on the kill at 30 yds. Anything past that forget it. Anything inside of that I gap. Except my gap is now "pick a spot". After 6 years of shooting this way I don't even think of yardage. I just "know" anything inside 30 is in my zone. Don't know if it's gap...started out thinking of yardage and now never do except to know any arrow I have is dead on tuned at 30 yards.
I love this "style". I am envious of folks who can shoot instinctive. I think this is as close as I am going to get. I got no complaints!

I switched to 3 under last year and it made a ton of difference. I was shooting a 55# martin ML14 longbow. I was putting my ring finger in the corner of my mouth and my index on my cheek bone. My point on was 25 yards. However, we did a bunch of rabbit hunting and I found that I couldn't do 3 under because I couldn't controll the arrow while swinging on a moving rabbit and it would fall off the rest. So, for moving targets, I went back to split.
I say was because I dislocated a shoulder playing street hockey with the kids. I can't pull the 55# 'er back, yet and I am shooting a 45# Green Bear that I picked up. The GB and I haven't come to an agreement on how it likes to be shot, but we'll get settled in before October, I am sure. Perhaps some nice new arrows will make it happy.
I was shooting the GB split fingered with the middle finger on the eye tooth at Compton and it went all right, but that gap was a much bigger than I liked.

With the ML14, I was shooting off the shelf. Arrows were 3555's with 8gpi inserts and 125 tips. At 20 yards, I would put the tip at the knees of a deer sized target.
Shooting the Green Bear split fingered, I had to put the tip about 6" below hoof level. That kind of made the gap hard to manage on turkey targets and what not.

It never ceases to amaze me how much different folks point-on distances vary. Here's my story: With most of my 54-56# R/D longbows, 27" draw, 29 1/2" .500 spine, 100gr. insert plus 145gr. point, total arrow weight 525gr. Three-under, middle finger at corner of mouth, point-on is 18yds. Works really well for hunting, but can be tough for longer ranges.

50 @28 Firefly longbow, pulling just shy of 29". 400 spine arrows with 300gr. up front cut to about 31". Nock point is 3/4". I anchor index finger in corner of mouth, thumb behind jaw and feather touches my nose. I'm with Wapiti in that my point on is 30 yards, but I'm only picking a spot at anything under that. I tried establishing a "gap" for shorter distances, but quickly realized that I was better off not doing it. I sometimes shoot split, but keep those shots to 20 and under circus shots just for fun.

Schafer at 55lbs shooting 35/55 with 200 grain points. 3 finger under index finger at the corner of mouth, feather at tip of nose. point on is 40 yards. shoot gap at 30 and 40 and instinctive everyting under 30. works well for me.

I have been told w/ 3U you need almost 3/4-7/8 nock placement and I don't find a single arrow to fly well like that. I'm around 1/2also. I shoot 3U middle finger corner of mouth, feather touching nose, point on about 30yds. I'm going to try index in corner of mouth to get a longer point on. I love shooting 50-60 yds and can not do it with 3U. I need to figure something out

I know you are kidding about the "dark side" comment(??).
Three Under with the index finger tip at the corner of the mouth.
53.5#@26" "The Stick" recurve is the bow at the top of my hunter list at this moment.
Double tied on nock locator. Bottom of nock is 5/8" above horizontal.
I shoot 27" Beman MFX Classic 500 spine carbon arrows with 100 grain brass insert and 125 grain Helix single-bevel broadhead. My total arrow width is 507 grains. This bow shoots 185 FPS with this arrow.
My point on is 32 yards if my index finger is touching the arrow nock. If my index finger is one finger-width below the nock my point on changes to 20 yards which is pretty handy from my tree stands.

I am currently shooting a standard Zipper, 45@28 shooting full length Easton axis 500 with 145 grain tips. I also use two nocks, with the arrow sitting 5/8" high. I anchor high, so my point on is about 17 yards. I just started trying gap a few months ago and I am very happy with the results. Three Under, anchor with middle finger in corner of mouth (where missing tooth is). 50# at 28'', draw about 28.25'' Longbow shot off shelf, nocking point 3/4'' above 90 degrees, 31.75'' wood arrow, 125 grain tip, 60-65 spine, 530-40 grains. Gap at 20 yards is two feet below target. Point on is about 42-43 yards. -I basically hold 2 feet below on any target from 15-30 yards. 18'' low at 35, and slightly low at 40.
