I've had a rough start to the season with a couple blown opportunities and confidence shrinking, but God put it all together for me this morning.

I'm hunting a standing soybean field where the south edge is a timbered sliver that rises about 30 feet to pasture.
Sticking out and pointing south is a narrow draw and with a NNW wind this morning, and rain last night dampening my foot falls, I decided to sneak in and ground hunt the mouth of that finger.

With my ghille cloak on and feet having cleared brush, I pick up my rattle bag and smack the wood dowels togther. Three bucks immediately answer, the largest barely making P&Y.
Next comes a pair of does, but they're on the opposite side of the draw and not making there way toward me. I gamble and blow my fawn distress call. The big doe comes crashing toward me, but won't commit to the lane. As she is turning to leave, I catch an ear moving-- another lone doe. She obviously read my script for this hunt-- she is coming out of the bean field on the upwind side of my ambush, takes the exact trail I was covering, and stops broadside.

I reach anchor and the arrow is away. She wheels and screams through the field with soybeans rattling in their pods. All goes quiet and I resume breathing.

The hit looked good, so I doff my cloak, sip some water, and walk to the point of impact. I immediately find the front half of the arrow and take up the blood trail-- which is not as copious as I'd hoped.
I locate the fletched end of the arrow at the bean field's edge and with some inspection notice "gut funk"? I'm replaying the shot in my head and frantically looking for blood-- nothing!

The enemy wants us to experience 5 things: worry, fear, shame, doubt, and anger -- and he was working overtime in the moments to follow, but my God is greater!

The sound of her death run took her east, so I begin a grid search in that direction-- nothing. I'm assessing my game plan with the potential of a paunch shot when my father texts me from his stand and I let him know I need help. After 30 min of searching, Dad appears from the west point of the beans and I pace his direction with my head on a swivel...AND THERE SHE IS!
She had run straight through the field and collapsed on the opposite side. The shot was perfection-- with her position slightly above me, I tucked the broadhead in her armpit and it exited high through the offside lung. The GI "stuff" on the arrow was because I lacerated the esophagus given the angle. --fun field dressing that!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow... especially snack sticks with cheese and jalepeno!!
