Traditional doe from a few weeks ago. Wensel Woodsman took both lungs at 18 yards. This is where she fell 80 yards away.

Wow! I too love to look through this photos - and wish...not only that I could be out there more often, but 'if only I could get some of these for the cover of our mag. Love that one of you looking out over the mountains Charlie - don't suppose you have that in a REALLY high resolution... or an actual print?
Email me guys if you're interested in letting me use them on/in the magazine.

...and Alan (in oz!) that camel pic brings back some fun memories.

Years back now, my uncle Dennis went out and roped him some wild camels, bought them back to the coast and when he'd tamed them a little (about a month if I remember right...not long enough to be pets for sure!) he saddled them up and rode East to West across the widest part of Australia.

The 'plan' was to release them once he arrived on the west coast, but by then they WERE pets....so he walked them back again!

At the time, I was working at QIT in Brisbane (now Qld Uni). Knew he was due back 'sometime soon' but while he'd said he'd be sure to drop in on me, didn't imagine he'd actually bring the camels into the city!!

Sure enough the head of my school came down all a fluster one morning. Said "there's three camels on the main lawn and some very tall arabian man with them!"

I was only a junior in the office and (fortunately) a bit of a teachers pet - quietly stood up and explained "that sounds like my uncle Sir. He said he'd call by to see me some time."
"Oh, well thats all right then." he replied. Poor guy! He really was all stressed out.

Anyway....was only 2 camels I'd been expecting to find but one of the females had given birth during the walk. While taking them back to the suburbs (yeah, it did make for a few looks) poor Adarn (the bub) tore one hoof on a guard rail.
Became my job to apply this stinking potion Dennis had found (smelt like old dead fish and looked like tar) to Adarn's leg twice a day. Adarn would spit and bit anyone else that came near - even Dennis couldn't control him, hence the accident - but for some jolly reason was meak as a lamb for me.

Do camels smell musty??? About the same as a 300 year old rug that's been left in the rain a few weeks and is proper mouldy!! Breath like ?? don't know, never smelt anything quite that bad before or since and a rather bad habit of spitting this green slime at you just whenever the mood takes them.

I fear I'll never be able to shoot a camel for Dennis will come haunt me!

My girls got to meet him not long before he died. Rochelle, who was in grade 4 at school by that time, wrote in her diary the next day...

"Mummy's Uncle Dennis came to visit us yesterday. He rode a Pennyfeather (Pennyfathing bike) from London to Australia. Ownes camels (he couldn't part with his pets so went out to the Alice to be a Cameleer) and swears a lot in many different languages."

Sorry for the prattle everyone - the pictures and the comments just remind me of him.
Mum still blames him because I 'do all these strange things' - she still can't get a handle on me loving the bush so much...not to mention 'hunting'!

"Thanks Uncle Denny"

Thank you JC. I sure prattled a bit didn't I. Sometimes is unfortunate that I can type as fast as I talk...yeh, pretty quick.
Uncle Denny was the BEST - we were always planning some new adventure.

I think all kids could do with a 'nice but wayward' crazy uncle like him in their lives.

Okay, WAY past my bedtime here - you all have yourselves a lovely day...and don't get too cold.

Gregg, that pic of your daughter is one of the cutest I've seen in a long time. You're a lucky man to have a smiling face like that to tag along with you. Start 'em young, keep the tradition alive.
