Where I hunt,on a good day we see 40-50, last New Years day a buddy and I went out and got 12 in an hour. I know they cycle but I have a theory about bunnies. I think if you hunt them enough, you end up taking the young and the stupid, and you end up with the breeders that are left having more litters as there is more food avalible, cause you killed a bunch in the winter and left the best to carry on JMHO! Where I hunt you wont see 40-50 a day for sure. This was taken 02/12/02 and was a couple hours of hunting. We ran a couple others but you can't get them all. I would consider this a better than average outing.
These are three of the dogs that should be there on the 10th. My dog (Buddy)is fair he doesn't hunt as much as he should and has a tendency to loose them at the turn by over running it. He hunts fast with those long legs but he is 10 now so slowing down a bit has a great voice but I am biased.
My friends dog Sadie (the little one in the middle) has a good nose but the funniest yip you ever heard when she is on trail it is just a high pitched yip yip yip. She is slow and methodical but can bring them around for sure.
The redish one (on the right)is Jack. My friend got him from another guy. Jack is lazy. He waits for the other dogs to find rabbits and then harks in. He is kind of dependant on the other dogs.

We get a lot more by jumping piles and putting on drives then with the dogs. A better then average whole day hunt if we have 5 guys would be 18-20 rabbits, average would 10-12. That would be in 3-4hrs of hunting. I think with the dogs they have a tendency to miss rabbits as they run one a few others sneak off and hole up. In one valley, super thick and a lot of multi-flora rose bushes we got 8 rabbits in 20 minutes on Monday. The guys I hunt with are not afraid to put there head down and dive into the nastiest stuff imaginable, if you don't go home a bit cut up, you weren't working hard enough for the bunnies. Shawn

Shawn, I agree, it seems we killed a lot more rabbits before we all had dogs. Don't think we had nearly as much fun though. Can't tell you how many easy rabbit shots I have passed to give the dog an opportunity to lose it.
Nothing like the sound of a hound in the woods though. I don't care if I kill rabbits if we get a few good runs in. No muss no fuss.

I agree 100%, I have my beagle and he sounds just like yours. I do not run him enough and he over-runs a lot of rabbits or brakes off on another in the middle of a good run. I also think that hunting with the bows, the dogs are the only way to go. It is tough on your bow, arrows and everything trying to fight your way thru the thick stuff carrying all that. I wasn't trying to be negative, I am looking forward to meeting everyone, the hunt is a secondary thing. I just think a lot of guys go out and come home with no game, because the effort is not there. They walk a few hedgerows and kick a pile or two and say, there are no rabbits around. I know last New years day with the snow 20"s deep and more coming down my buddy and I had to jump some piles 3-4 times to get the rabbnits to run out and when they did they would only run 10ft. sometimes. We only hunted a short time and we were exhausted. This was with shotguns of course. I will be honest, if someone on this hunt gets a rabbit I will doing backflips. Shawn

The tenth is the plan there is nothing on the calendar anyway. So unless some unforseen event happens that is the day. We will be hunting down the road from my house about 3 miles. A couple miles north of 104.
If you have any local places it might be good to have a few other places we can hit if need be.
