Howdy from the Greenwood, AR region of the state. I have been a long time archer, and have been considering stepping into the traditional side of things for a few years now and think that this year will be THE year. I am reading up and trying to learn and would really like to find a Dakota bow in the very near future to buy. I know one can order one up, but then that would put me getting the bow too late for our deer season. I like the idea of them being built nearby and I read that they shoot great also. I will be attending his school also as soon as I get the bow. If anybody runs across one in a 60-64 inch length and in the 43 to 48 pound range then give me a shout.

Welcome to TG. Another local bowyer is Elmer Patton of Crow Creek bows. Can't hurt to look. There are numerous threads about his bows here on TG and he also has a website.

When I started trad almost 4 years ago I had nobody to show me anything but I did find TG. This site has helped me so much. I can tune, build strings, silencers and now I'm making my own wooden arrows. I don't think there is a trad related question that will stump the gang.

Lastly I'd like to invite you to attend our 2011 ARROW event at Lake Ouachita in Oct. There is a slide show from last year's hunt just a few threads down on this page.

I bought me a starter recurve off of here the other day. It is a zipper extreme and a beauty of a bow to the eye and I am sure it shoots even better. This is going to be fun.

I got the zipper in today and already learned that I am in need of a glove cause this bare fingered stuff ain't for me. I also need some arrows designed for this stuff. It is sure gonna be different shooting this darned slow.

Bare fingers? I'm not even hard core enough to shoot caveman style. Got to have my tab to protect my didgits. Tab or glove will work for you. Just a personal choice but I go with the tab. I seem to get a smoother release than with a glove. Plus it's easier to get a dip when wearing a tab. [Big Grin]

I shoot a 43 pound bow but with my 5/16 woodies they zip along pretty good. Whats the specs on your bow and yourself? maybe we can gelp some with the arrows.

This is a 62 inch Zipper Extreme with 51# at 28. I likely needed closer to the 45 pound range, but it is what it is and I can get it drawn back even with bare fingers, but I don't want to do it too many times. Onced upon a time I shot a recurve a time or so using a tab and didn't like the feel of it then so I ordered me a glove. I will order me a tab also and see which I like better now. I got all summer to dink with it. I am going to want to shoot the Carbon Express heritage arrers. I think a 250 spine is what I am in need of.

Myself. I am 6 foot and 180 pounds and draw a PSE Axe 6 compound about 30 inches at 65 pounds. I have been shooting archery for about 30 years now.

Have you cehcked your draw with your trad bow? Most people actually loose a bit of leangth. Easy way to check is to put an arrow on the bow as usual. Then place a clothes pin on the shaft but in front of the bow so when you draw the clothes pin will slide down the shaft. Draw like normal and measure how far the clothespin slid down the shaft. Do several times to get an average.

My Crow Creek Dalton is 51@28 and my arrows were carbon express 150's cut to 29.5" I shot 175gr up front and that particular combo shot well for me.

I started making woodies two months ago and and have only been shooting them. Since I've dropped down to 45 pounds I can use 5/16 arrows instead of the 11/32" wooden shafts. I make my 5/16 arrows from birch dowels per instructions in the how to section thread call .92 arrow. I'm using snow goose feathers that I got for free so I estimate my arrows cost around .50 each with factory tips on them.

When i was buying carbon express arrows I found the best deals on the bay. Carbon express 150 arrows are the only ones I ever tried so my knowledge base on carbons is limited. If 125- 175gr heads are fine with you there I'm pretty sure you would be happier with the 150. If you want heavy heads over 200 gr then the 250's are probably be your best bet.

learn to bareshaft test your arrows to find best arrow tune ,you might need to shoot a month or so before you go to that...

guess I can try to buy a few of each spine or just go with the 150s and call it good. I am going to wait until I get my glove in before doing anything else other than buy arrows with this bow. I don't believe I will be shooting heads heavier than 175

My buddy Caleb has a 30+ draw. I'll see if I can get him to chime in on the subject.

Bareshaft tuning is the best way to go about finding the best arrow setup. You get it right by bareshafting and your arrows will really impress you. Fletchings cover up a lot of bad shooting/tuning problems. get the bareshaft dialed in and the rest is a piece of cake.

Should a feller start with a full length carbon if one doesn't really know what draw they will have ? I am not sure at all if they sell the heritage arrows at our local bow shop, but will find out this week.

try some black gold tips maybe 75/95 if your draw lengh is really 30' a lot depends on the amount of center shot your bow has, leave full length to start, you can always add more weight, but once you cut ,it hard to add more arrow...get some 50 and 100 grain brass inserts....and diffrent weight heads black gt hunters are best bang for buck...wait till you can hold bow weight...for 10 seconds or so...before you start tuning.maybe 30 or 60 days more or less do not snap shoot bad habit hard to cure..get release perfected...before you do anything else..

The back gold tip 75/95 will spine about .340 the gold tip 75/95 traditionals will spine about.300 they will be to stiff and to heavy...unless you want a 700 grain arrow...lots of places sell them on line pay your money and take your choice...
