Fellas, I'm looking for some of our MLA members who may know something about DIY hog hunting. Don't matter what state. Looking for Jan/Feb for a wk. Been asked to put together a longbow hog hunt for one of our members and I know exactly ZIP about hog hunting.....or any other kind of hunting for that matter. If anyone has connections or has been there done that, I would appreciate some help.

Ray Hammond's Hog Heaven down in South Carolina. I'll be down there in March, he has/had some openings for Jan/Feb posted in the sponsor section. I've heard nothing but good things about it, that's why I'm going.

Rays is OK but gets hunted a lot and those pigs are smart. Ray is a great guy though. Hopefully the maid has cleaned the place up this year. Wonder if the the dead lizard is stuck in the bathroom door?
I'd go to Georgia and the WMA's. The deer season will be done and you should have the woods to your self. Check out the Georgia Outdoors web site. They have a bunch of topic on hunting and fishing including spot and stalk hag and trad bow. You can gain a lot of info from reading the posts. But not many folks will give up their hot spots. Good luck, it's a lot of fun.

The WMA in any state is by far our first choice but unless you have someone in the area to put you on the animals, you could spend a wk looking for them. May find the right spot on your last hunt day and then have to leave, if you find it at all. So we need someone in one of the southern states I'm thinking.

I don't agree with needing help. DIY to me is do it yourself not paying for it. Ray's place has pigs and the food is good but I'd still look at the WMA. Ft Stewart has pigs too but the rules need to be followed step by step and if you slip up they band you from the base. I'd drive the dirt roads and look for tracks. Pigs are always moving looking for food. They remember places they found food in the past and make their rounds crossing roads as they go. Boar hogs run the roads looking for sows in heat. Bale out and start tracking and use you ears. Keep the wind in you face. Move fast through the open areas, slow down where it's thick. You'll hear them before you see them. If you do the research you'll be able to come up with a good WMA. Read the posts, study the maps, call the DNR.
Even the best hunters like RC and Chris Spikes don't kill a pig every time out. Maybe one pig for every 7 hunts? Guys go to Ray's place every week and many go home without seeing a pig and fewer kill one. Hogs are not easy in the swamp.

I plan on going to Texas in 2012 sometime before June but after February. Don't care how I get there but I'm going!!
DIY is fine but I wouldn't mind paying a trespass fee for something with better chances to slay bacon.
High fence is out of the question for this trip, really looking to score on some wild piggies.

Good luck Arwin. If you are going to an WMA in TX though you may want look at your dates a bit. We were told the WMA we had planned to hunt has a hog killin in Feb. You can take a pig on any other license incidental to your hunt through out the fall. No pigs only season until Feb. Then everyone comes, with all types of weapons. They thin the herds so to speak.

I see going to Ray's place as a great opportunity to learn a ton about pigs and get experience stalking them. $600 for three days including good meals and a modest bunk doesn't seem bad compared to bear or elk guide prices.
I saw a bunch of pigs on my first trip last summer, and was well inside shooting range with a few of them. I've got two more trips booked this spring and then I'll probably start planning my own trip to northern California. Thom
