sorry guys if this is the wrong forum for thid but I'm looking for bowhunting info on Rutherford Cty specifically "Murfreesboro"... I just met up with a close friend of my parents at my Moms funeral and he invited me to come down and hunt behind his house. he says he sees alot of Deer in his back yard every night but he does not hunt so i was wondering if any of you might be able to tell me something about the area.

I did get the TN hunting guide and I seen its 175.00 for a biggame license.

I'm mainly interested in harvesting does for meat using traditional bows (self, long and recurves)

any info will be very helpful.. thanks again, Ted

Ted-
You might want to call the Region 2 office and even talk with the county game warden if you need specific information about Murfreesboro, there might be different regulations of hunting inside the city limits. But compared to Mass, the regs may seem easy. You might want to know how large a space your friend has to hunt. If it doesn't seem promising, then there are some Wildlife Mgt Areas not too far away.

Another place for info might be tndeer.com in the general or serious deer hunting forums. It gets a lot of TN specific traffic.

thank you David for that info. so far I'm seeing during the archery season you can only take Does? until the gun season starts but I'm not sure if I'm reading that right.

he says the woods behind his house go on forever and the deer come into his yard every late afternoon.

I also meant to add that I wrote about the woods behind his house to give an idea how big it is back there so it shouldn't be a problem hunting back there I think but I will give the region 2 office a call also and make sure I can hunt in there.

Murfreesboro is an urban area nowdays, but the deer I have seen there are healthy. I don't think the part about the doe only is right unless there have been some changes made that I don't know about. It will likely be a great hunt for you so follw through. JB

If you have his physical address, you can use google earth to see the amount of forest that you'll be hunting. "goes on forever" will mean different things and you'll know if it's big enough to make it worthwhile, also you'll need to know about boundaries and if the neighbors will be friendly if your deer runs across onto them.

Good luck!
David

One more thing that I meant to clarify - you can take up to 3 bucks with archery equipment. If Rutherford is Unit L and I think that it is, you can take up to 3 does/day.

sorry i haven't posted back but I have a thread going over in TNDeer.com. but if you go online to the TN hunting guide on PG 23 it has 3 posted for does and nothing posted for bucks until the Muzzleloader season starts up then everyone can go for 3 bucks.. I could be reading it wrong and I'll know for sure when I get down there in Sept but thats the way I am seeing it.. everyone I have spoke to so far from TN says it does not sound right but nobody hunts in rutherford Cty though?

doesn't matter because I want the meat deer anyway seeing how its early season.

thanks for all the posts and I'll check that out on Google earth

TN unfortunately isn't known to have transparent and easy to decipher deer season regulations, but it's actually simpler this year than in prior years.

It's 3 bucks per year any weapon statewide now, I don't know of any exceptions to that rule now. East TN had a 2 buck rule until this year and it changed.

The best way to absolutely ease your mind would be to call the region 2 office in Nashville and the TWRA staff could lay your concerns to rest.

honestly if you go on-line on the TN regulations and look at Pg 23 to me it means sept 27th to oct 24 its 3 antlerless deer a day only. but I will take your advice and check with the office first.

can you hunt on sunday in Tennesee????? up here we cannot and its usually written in big letters.. TN doesn't mention it anywhere in the book that I can find.

also,, thank you again for all the info... if you guys ever have a auction going on post up so i can donate a few things that would strike some interest to the bidders.

Tajue17,
I was one of the Wildlife Officers in Rutherford County for a period of six years. Does your friend own some land other than the yard where his house sits? Does he live in North West Rutherford County? The reason I ask is the only public land in Rutherford County is Percy Priest WMA. It surounds Percy Priest Lake and up the tributaries to the first dams. Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and Lavergne is more or less a suburb of Nashville now. Don't let that discourage you though. I had properties that I hunted inside the city limits and yes you can hunt in the city limits if you have permission from the landowner. There are nice bucks located in the city urban areas across this entire state.

On the limits of deer for this year during the first segment of archery season for Unit L which Rutherford County is in, you can kill 108 deer (3 bucks and 105 does if I did my math right). Bring lots of arrows. Don't hesitate to send a pm if you need more advice.

Hunt all you want on Sunday too!

Good luck,
Nathan

wow sounds very good, yeah he is in Murfreesboro and from what I'm told the woods go deep out back and he said he almost got lost out back there just checking the place out.

I plan on taking a ride down and checking out the area behind his house but if it doesn't pan out behind his house what about persey-priest,,,,, without giving me your hot spots can you give me an idea where to go as a first timer in there.
I'm also not a walker I usually sit in the tree 90% of the time unless I'm tracking or coming in or out.
