so i decided to put the sharpening skills i learned on this site to use...... i took my santuko kitchen knife and did my best on it with a wet stone then a strop and used it to shave. not to bad really did better than i expected but still not a razor. goes to show that all i have learned about edge geometry is really very important , from a chopper,to a skinner, and a razor are all sharp blades but with completely different edges on them they are suited to there own special purpose. thanks for all the advice on sharpening and edge geometry.

A local knifemaker/sharpener here in Trondheim, Norway has made his own system of leather straps with a special grindingpaper and powder which works wonders. After sharpening he tests the knives first by cutting and "S" shape through tobacco rollingpaper at and angle from the side, then testing if it will do the same on soft 2-layer toiletpaper [Big Grin] Amazingly sharp!

I've always been proud of my sharpening skills on cutting tools of all shapes and sizes. Then I bought a straight razor with plans to use it as my regular razor. My skills are not what I thought they were...
