Title: New bow !!! Carbon arrow spine help needed
Post by: Pryor on January 01, 2016, 12:47:00 PM
Hey guys,
I have been shooting a 50# Bear Montana long bow for almost a year.  My practice schedule has not been consistent, but try to shoot a couple times a week if i can help it.  My accuracy and grouping has seemed to hit a wall.  I have decided it is lack of good form, and to buy a lower poundage bow, and start fresh.  I just won an auction on **** for a 40# bear grizzly and am anxiously awaiting its arrival.  I plan to hunt turkeys, and small game with it, and am trying to get some good hunting arrows.  I am leaning towards Easton axis traditionals, tipped with cutthroat broad heads.  not worried about speed, just want good penetration on those turkeys. My draw length is right about 29" and I am a right handed shooter. Looking for correct spine and tip weight to get me close when I start tuning arrows.  Any one shooting a similar set up?  All advice welcome, thanks in advance

Full length (30.5") Axis 600's 175gr Cutthroat if sold in that weigth is just above 10 gpp. Should do it on birds.

Axis Trads should work great. Remember that they come with the 50/75 brass inserts so take that into account when you purchase points.
The small diameter should help with penetration.

It was my understanding that the new Axis trads don't come with the brass inserts any more but with aluminum inserts.
Old stock should still have the brass inserts.
Check before you buy.

Thanks for the replies.  After looking at prices of axis trads I am now open to other possibilities. I guess what I really need to know is spine and tip weight for 41# at 29" draw.  After searching the forums it looks like between 500 and 600 spine.  Thanks for the advise

Gold tip 1535 will be 600 spine. Big Jim bow company might have blems on sale.

A 500 or 600 spine carbon will work. It just depends on how much weight you want to shoot up front.
Brass inserts in 50 grain and 100 grain are also available for the Gold Tip and Carbon express arrows. These models have the advantage up being able to hot melt the brass insert in, meaning you can take it out and switch for more options.
The Easton HIT inserts are epoxied in and permanent.

I found 3 different people in the classifieds here from 40 to 65 bucks that have arrows that are long enough and with the right weight points would work.

Hey Matty, Thanks for the offer.  I am located in Grand Junction so might be a bit of a drive to pick up arrows to play with.  I Just ordered 12 Gt trad blems (600's) from Big Jim.  Sounds like with enough tip weight these should work well.  Now I just need to find Brass Inserts, and different field points to tune with.  After I get tuned and fletched I will let you guys now how it shoots.  Thanks for all the replies
