An article regarding the "Airbow" and the preservation of archery only seasons! Please share this article anywhere you can. This is a very important topic and we all own the future integrity of bowhunting! This weapon has no place in archery only seasons!!!!

"The Pioneer enhances everything enthusiasts enjoy about archery hunting while making the sport safer and more accessible."
All that remains from regular archery hunting is the arrow, so this is like saying enthusiasts only enjoy the arrow, not the curves, warmth and wood patterns of a bow, etc.
I imagine this air bow can be fun to shoot in its own right, but it is a totally different animal from traditional bows, compounds and crossbows. Its just a pneumatic spear gun, so I have no idea how they can even put "bow" in the name.
-
Agreed!!!!!

+2 Might as well put a laser on it also.

Bad bad bad.
-
Been shooting a bow for 60 years and when the compound showed up we ALL said what's next. We all know the direction archery has taken and now this and as I write this, like the crossbow, the airgun will be on the hunting scene. Sadly money talks.
-
This thing was in the booth next to ours at ATA and it was not good. Very loud and not a bow in any regard.
It has no place in archery as it's not a bow. It's an air gun that shoots projectiles. . .period.
The folks at ATA probably won't let it in next year.

From the link:
"Bowhunting was meant to be difficult. It was supposed to be challenging. The idea was to limit yourself, to give the game the advantage and heighten the experience of a hunt."
Exactly. I'm OK with compounds (even though they really are missing out on some of the above IMO), and with crossbows for those with physical issues and kids in a certain age range but this is going too far!

I agree with you, but that means we need to ALL take action. Share this article with your friends. Download the template letter and send to your local representatives. We can't just sit back and wait for it to happen, then complain in 10 years about how much we hate airbows going off around us during bow season.....or there is no longer a bow season and just one "Open Season".
Preserving the integrity of bowhunting is at stake. Manufactures already have boots on the ground trying to get this atrocity legalized in many states. Their hope is to get ahead of the people that would oppose such a weapon being allowed. Don't be one of those that only complains after the fact, take action now!
-
I don't really understand the reason for anybody wanting to use one of these during archery season. Every genre of bowhunter is already covered. Traditional, compounds, and crossbows cover every aspect that anybody could want.
I myself am in the process of converting from compound to traditional, and as far as I can tell it's everything that I hoped it would be. That's the thing that is most important. The challenge, the skills it takes to get close to game, and the practice needed to make a good clean shot. Archery shouldn't ever be degraded to pulling a trigger and shooting a deer at 80 yards. That isn't archery. I hope that this "air bow" will go away.

I agree with you. Sadly, Crosman and Benjamin already have people working with states to legalize (where it is not already) this weapon. The argument will be that they only want it for gun seasons but if you read and listen to any of the marketing on this weapon right now they are CLEARLY wanting it to be allowed in archery seasons. There is an article and video on the Game and Fishing Magazine website that tells the whole story. In the article they start with "The Crosman Pioneer Airbow enhances everything enthusiasts enjoy about archery hunting while making the sport safer and more accessible." but then in the video they correctly refer to the weapon as a gun numerous times.

Bow hunting for me is exactly as Aldo penned in the 1930's a voluntary limitation on gadgets that requires woodmaship skills to overcome.
"[T]here is value in any experience that exercises those ethical restraints collectively called 'sportsmanship'. Our tools for the pursuit of wildlife improve faster than we do, and sportsmanship is the voluntary limitation in the use of these armaments. It is aimed to augment the role of skill and shrink the role of Gadgets in the pursuit of wild things."
-Aldo Leopold-
If we make "hunting" a sure thing, it no longer is hunting...we might as well just pen the deer in and send them to slaughter. That way, no one needs to know how to sharpen a knife, clean an animal, or even how to tie your damn boots....just where your pj's and slippers to the meat section and throw it in the cart!
Bows have strings, period. I'll be sending my concerns to the WI DNR today.

Just got a phone call from a WDNR Administrative Warden - Natural Resources Policy Officer. He said he has been getting a lot of calls/emails in the past few months about the new "airbow"...but I guess these have been a thing for almost a decade now.
According to WI State Law, the Airbow is considered to be an AirGUN that fires a unique projectile, and as such can only be used for hunting small game in the State. For this to change in WI, there would need to be legislative action (a 2-3 year process minimum) and the State would have to change the law, and then establish seasons on when/where/what the AirGUN can be used for.
He encouraged me to make sure to voice my concern with lobbying organization like WI Bowhunters and other groups, and to voice my opinion at the local Deer Advisory Council meetings this Spring and in the future.
To be legally used in archery seasons, the State would have to further change the definition of "archery equipment" as well.
That's all for now.

Sad to say Miles, but the Crossbow industry bought our Republican legislators (who control both houses) and Republican governor, and very quickly got crossbows in the archery season in Wisconsin. (Yeah, I know, they created a separate season, but it runs concurrent with the archery season.)
If the air gun folks can come up with enough money, they can do the same thing, and very quickly regardless of what hunters want. Too, there are probably enough folks around who want something easier to carry and shoot than a crossbow during the archery season.
If the air gun folks are smart, they'll partner with the makers of those small UAVs (drones) and make them legal for hunting as well. After all, they're just another "tool." They don't actually shoot the deer -- yet.
Hate to sound so pessimistic, but the world is going to H in a hand basket. Enjoy your bowhunting while you can.

He said there's likely some support for these things, and make sure to get our lobbyists involved and to also show up to make it known that you don't support it.
He said, most times, they never hear from the non-support side until they pass things.
At any rate, I fear deer hunting is going to be messed up with all the different county zones managing different goals, and public/private land doe tags....wildlife managers will never be able to effectively do their job managing the herd at carrying capacity with so many uninformed or misinformed hands in the jar.
-
To the OP: The Michigan Bow Hunters and archery hunters across the state fought the crossbow to the bitter end.
This is how it will work. They introduce it and in this case again as it has been around for over a decade, then they request it be used by the dis-abled and then after a few seasons it will be allowed in the regular hunting season.
Money talks just like it did with the crossbow.
-
The key is to flat out say No Not in any bow season! That includes men , women And child !
-
Great post Steve
-
Wingnut, with all due respect,
Don't count those chickens regarding the ATA's private stance on this device. They said for years they weren't pushing for crossbow seasons either.
It will be fun to watch the crossbow makers fight this one. Irony will be dripping so heavy one will need a raincoat and lots of room freshener.
-
I know it seems difficult. But, if we all keep hunting our way and for our personal reasons, we will enjoy our season no matter who is toting what. Enjoy what makes you archery happy and don't ruin days sweating over junk like this, or cross guns or wheelies. Its just not worth the angst as it steals away from our positive experiences we are after to begin with. We chose the stick and string for a reason, adhere to that and remember it cant be taken away unless its all taken away.
-
Sound advice Pearl Drums.
I saw the conflict of the crossbow issue cut by 75% the membership of our state bowhunting organization. The organization may never recover.
It was divisive because we let it be.
Of course that shouldn't stop anyone from letting their wildlife agency and representative how they feel. You wouldn't believe how often in a public hearing where the agency or rep will say they hear only from those who want something (like 2 people) and nothing from the opponents.
I agree with Pearl though, obsessing about it and worrying that this could be the "end" is unpleasant and mostly wrong. Frankly, the compound has been a good thing for bowhunting because it boosted our numbers quickly and strongly, much more than we recurve users (ok, and LB folks) would have done.
The thing that bothers me most about campaigns like will come with this (and did with the crossbow) are the lies that will come from the mouths (and hearts) of many advocates. They should all run for office since that seems to be the first qualification of a politician.
-
Been around this sport along time, shooting for 60 years and seen a lot of changes and not many for the good. Heck they even invented a word for archery, "traditional" because back in the day it was just called archery.
I ain't obsessing about it, just stating a fact as to where archery has come from and where it is going.
I am fortunate to own my own property to hunt on and pass on to my grandkids.

The air bow has given me a great idea... the powder-bow. Plenty of people have one already and my not even know it. My powder-bow is a Remington 700 that improves upon the air bow by using an explosive powder to propel a 180 grain arrow instead of effort or air. Maybe these are the next step for bow seasons... :readit: :readit:

If the "air bow" would ever be legalized we would have even more, "lazy" people roaming the woods. It was amazing when Michigan legalized the crossbow, how many people went out and bought a crossbow because of "bad shoulders". One person told me he just doesn't have time to practice. I just bite my tongue and smile back. Oh the times they be a changing. :archer:
-
Barely on topic but...
I despised the crossbow for most of my adult life. I even worked against it being legalized dating back to the early 1980s (IN).
However, when your best friend (mine is 70), who after 50 years of shooting vertical bows (and national/world 3D champion) can't do it anymore....the crossbow keeps him in the woods. Cancer hammered him.
I agree that many who use them and would use the topic of this thread, are not dedicated enough to HOW they hunt to make practice a priority. But, not everyone.
I agree with BWallace10327 above.... give it a couple more years and someone will invite a projectile that can be contained with powder (cartridge) and launched from a hollow tube (barrel).
-
Before crossbows were legal for everyone to use in Michigan, it was legal for a disabled person with the proper paper work to hunt with one during archery season. Myself and everyone I know had no problem with it. If it meant that the individual could keep enjoying the woods that was great!!! As I've said in other posts on the crossbow subject, they are legal here in Michigan and I leave it at that. I may not agree with them but that's the way it is.
-
Same thing happened in Wisconsin. Folks with disabilities could get a permit to use Crossbows during deer season. That wasn't enough for the crossbow industry or pseudo bowhunters. No bowhunting or gun hunting organizations asked for legalizing the crossbow during archery season, yet we have it.
-
Some influential people end up with crossbows during the persuasive stages of these decisions.
-
How in the world are they thinking they can use this weapon and "archery" in the same sentence.
-
"How in the world are they thinking they can use this weapon and "archery" in the same sentence."
They are thinking money is why. Period. It's called the big tent theory. The we all have to stick together and not in fight if we are going to survive theory. First it will be for "handicapped" individuals. Then one or two years later it will be included in bow season! Just stating facts here. They will meet with DNR officials from your state the at local Cabelas's and convince how more many people will benefit from it and how much revenue they will get from including it in BOW season. Your local DNR officials after having a all expense paid trip will all go home with a brand new Crossman bow gun! Trust me just stating the facts.
Once again it's called the big tent theory. Myself for one is getting very wet standing on the edge of the big tent!
-
Miles,
I love your comments.
Well stated.
-
I think we are fooling ourselves. Most "bow hunters" don't think like we do. On the Long Island Deer Hunting facebook page which is basically for bow hunters they took a poll to see who was in favor of the crossbow. Over 80% of the compound hunters wanted the crossbow legal on LI. I'm guessing 80% will support this airgun too.
-
Whew! I was way off base. Saw the header and kept wondering, air bow... air bow??...like air guitar??
Was expecting some crazy new age yoga virtual just visualize the bow, now draw the imaginary bow, Jack Handy kinda mumbo jumbo...
Guessing the actual contraption is almost as goofy.
So a wild guess, basically a blow dart with a stock?? Does it have a string?
-
All opposed will have to pay more than the airgun company does to your state politicians to keep them out of archery season. Thats the only way to win this battle. You can sit here and gripe all you want about it which will do nothing but make you feel better.
Their marketing dept claims they are legal in five states so far. Not sure if that is during archery season or not though. Read the fine print. Power of suggestion maybe. Haha

Colorado has regs prohibiting them.
"G. Hydraulic or pneumatic technology cannot be used To derive or store energy to propel arrows."
-
Bowhunters should have fought to define archery equipment restrictions years ago. This weapon or the crossgun would never even be considered archery equipment if we would have taken a stand....shame on us as bowhunters!
Ron
-
This is going to be an ongoing battle! I think the only way we can really avoid it is by separating ourselves from the mechanically cocked and propelled equipment...crossbows, airguns all of it! If we can separate ourselves legislatively we can have a separate season which will generate additional funds. Its all about funds. I would recommend separate ourselves from compounds as well but they have become too much a part of true archery equipment and have allowed too many people to enjoy the true hand-drawn and released archery hunting experience.
-
In other words we need to be petitioning our state game departments for a separate mechanically cocked arrow gun/crossbow season with additional tags and funds.
-
To the best of my knowledge its not legal for Whitetail in Michigan. Maybe during gun season.

That's how they passed the Crossbow in WI....except it runs concurrent with archery season.

so whats next? would bolt launching drones (if someone did invent them) become a bowhunting weapon? press a button an there's your trophy!
