Would like to see your game harvests using a 40# - 45# bow if you have one. Game and bow pics especially. :D
-
Here ya go, 45# Kanati longbow.

Thanks Jim. I was beginning to wonder if anyone shot bows at this poundage anymore! :D

#46 Kanati
-
Yeah, the pink really shows up good to my eyes and makes following the arrows path easy.
-
Brandon, what kind of animal is that and what kind of broadhead did you use?
-
My avatar pic is of my first trad deer taken with a 44lb. Mikuta recurve at 5 yards.
-
Pat B kills hogs all the time with his Mohawk, I think it's around 45#'s.With the right set up that's all you need for most anything that most of us hunt!

Excellent Mike!
-
Rod Jenkins had posted his two gigantic Texas hogs from the last two years with his 40# ILF setup. If I remember correctly he shot completely through one and the other he buried the broadhead in the off side shoulder.

Outstanding pics Kenny! Thanks for sharing. I may be having a new longbow built soon but, had some shoulder trouble this past year, and I may be getting it in the 45# range as opposed to the 50#'s I had planned.
-
Glad you brought this up TW. I was wondering the same question. I am having a bow built and I thought it may be too light for what I chase out here in AZ. :dunno: Or what bows I am used to shooting.
-
Well, with a minimum of 50#'s for elk here in Oregon, this will put me out of hunting for them. Will just have to be happy with deer sized game and below.

Thank you for the compliment. They are nice carp. I have shot many that could eat these with my wheels back in the day when I lived near bigger water.
Out of the great lakes and the Mississippi, they can get 6 times the size of these.

Tell me, what is your bow weight at your 37" draw :readit:

OOHH about 60 or so, thanks Charlie
-
Long story about this bow, I bought it new in '68, sold it around '71, re-bought it in '06- took her out to kill something with it,( I never bagged anything with it during my first ownership, the other kid did though, a 6 pointer I believe). And then this Jersey stud walked under my tree on Friday the 13th.

This was with a TD recurve I made that came out lighter than I anticipated. It ended up 40# @ 28". This shot was a complete pass through as well as one other.
A friend of mines son, "Plumber", has this bow now and I can't wait until he shoots one with it.

You folks really are getting it done! Outstanding pics, thank you very much for sharing them. I think I'll just get my longbow made at 45# @ my 29" draw. These are some very inspiring and motivating pics to say the least! :D
-
The good news is that those are my specs, 45# @ 29" so if it don't work out I may be interested in what ever you might buy.... :biglaugh: I'm sure I'm not the only one! :dunno:
-
Ron, you'll have first crack! :D
-
I opened the forum expecting to do a search for sub 45# bow kills and here was this thread!
I've been hunting with 46-48# and very pleased with the results. I just bought a set of 56", 42#@26 draw weight limbs for my PCH. I thought the limbs might be a bit light. The bow is fun to shoot and I'm thinking it will be terrific in my turkey blind.
I'm thinking to use Beman MFX Classics, spine 600, 27", with 125 single bevel Helix with 50 grain insert. According to Stu's Calculator with which I have fantastic results, this will be a 407 grain arrow @ 9.6 GPP. I could also go with 500 Spine, 27.5" with 125 grain Helix and 100 grain insert. This would add 100 grains and get me to 12 GPP.

My first one, this doe, another doe and spike fell to my 42# Ben Peason Cougar.

Here's mine! Warthog taken with my 45# Arvin Weaver selfbow. The PH on this hunt was watching me practicing with this bow and told me he did not think that this bow would have enough penetration to kill a warthog. The warthog had an entry and exit hole with a double lung shot and went about 80yds!

I normally shoot 50-53#. A couple of years ago I hurt my shoulder and had difficulty pulling my hunting bow. I borrowed a 45# Howatt Hi-Speed from my son, found some arrows that shot and traveled from Colorado to Kansas where I shot this buck on the 3rd day of my hunt. I got a pass through shooting a STOS head. (http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd313/jimscol/KSdeersm.jpg)

Jim, that's my problem right now also. Hurt shoulder. I am currently shooting a 40# Martin Dreamcatcher pulling it to 29" so, about 43#.

A good friend of mine broke his collarbone in late August and had to cancel his elk hunt. I sent him a set of 41# limbs for his bear takedown and he killed a nice 8 pt buck the end of Oct.

Some very nice animals taken with 40-45# bows. Just goes to show, sharp broadheads and proper shot placement will get the job done as long as you stay within your ESR. Thanks to all for sharing your pics and info.

You need to add "well tuned" to that list too.
Bisch
-
Well, I may be changing somethings in the bow department but, my weight range will still be the same. Seems I am being bitten by the t/d recurve bug!
-
Thanks Bisch. Forgot to mention the well tuned arrow, which is just as important as the sharp brodheads and proper shot placement, which all should work in unison. Man we are helpers one of another.
Tony

Wannabe1, Great tread. Shows us what a well tuned bow with sharp broad heads can do. Awesome.

This P&Y class Bull was taken by one of our club members a few years back. He had some shoulder issues that year and couldn't pull his normal weight. Worked into this 41# Recurve. (40# required by law) Don't know what broadhead but had a front loaded carbon.

That's it I'm going moose hunting!
-
light poundage works fine, and in a high performance bow will better heavier bows. my 46lb acs shoots the same 650gr arrow as my 61lb d shape bow 9 fps faster, it will throw a 505 gr arrow at 176fps which is just 8 fps slower than 58lb pch. my 49lb morrison dakota wiyh carbon/foam hits just as hard as a 58lb pch with the same arrow.
great pics guys
-
Wanted to bring this up top to show my boy that a lower weight bow can be effective.
-
Great stuff......
-
Good thread to answer all the "is my setup ok for ____________".
You fill in the animal on the blank.
The question gets asked often by newer shooters and this should help them understand what well put together/tuned equiptment can do in the woods.
Not trying to start anything with those that shoot heavier bows. Many EXCELLENT shooters/hunters use much heavier weight bows. And everyone should shoot the bow that they are MOST accurate with. For me it's 50 to 58 pounds depending on the bow.
Great thread for anyone that needs or is most comfortable with a lighter poundage bow.

I'll try to find a pic, but my buddy shot a P&Y woodland caribou, complete pass through with a 70" 40# 1969 Hoyt Pro Medallist recurve. I put prairie rattlers on it for him to camo those white limbs.

Here's a better picture.

My first bow kill, and first deer ever, was a nice 10 point buck with a 45# Ben Pearson recurve back in 1971. No pics from that far back. More luck than skill went into that little adventure.

This thread inspires me. When I got back into trad last year I bought a 51# Browning Nomad from the classifieds here. A few months later I bought a beater Ben Pearson Stallion 45# for a bowfishing rig. The Ben Pearson has quickly become my favorite. I also refinished the Ben Pearson so it is no longer a "beater"! I just cant get any consistency with the Browning but I am very confident with the Ben Pearson so I will probably use it this fall.
Scott.
-
Lots of good points here. Twenty years ago I thought I had to shoot a 60# recurve and I missed a lot of deer. I've had much more success after moving down to a 46# bow. These days I stay somewhere in the 45#-50# range. A 60# bow is tough to draw after you've been sitting still for 2 or 3 hours.

This is a great topic and I'd still like to see more people chime in. I have heavier poundage bows, but I probably shoot my Hill Country 45# longbow the best.
Right now it will probably be my go to bow for hunting this fall and I'm looking for recommendations on a heavy arrow setup. What's everyone else using in your 40-45# bows?

My whole arrow was around 540 grns. I was shooting 2117 with a 125 grn broadhead. I don't know why but I put that combo in 3-4 different bows from the soveriegn mace 43#, bear super kodiak 46#, martin hunter 57# and then a martin vision at 53# and they all shot good.

Here's my wife with her first 2 longbow kills. Both of these bows drew in the 40's at her draw lenth and she had no problems putting them to work. Her current bow is a MOAB that is about 44# at her draw length and I can't wait to see what she does with it this year!!!

Brad....that one is a big Doe, really cool that she is doing so well with her longbow  :notworthy:
-
Thank you Ron, she had used a compound on deer since she was 12. I never pressured her to switch to trad bows but 2 years ago she was ready for a change and told me she wanted to give up the wheels and try a longbow. We shot together all spring and summer and when she killed that first doe she was hooked, and her compound was sold. She's also going to be building her own arrows for this season. I have her a dozen poplar shafts and some turkey feathers from a turkey I killed coming from Magnus for her to use on them. I feel very fortunate that this is something we both share and do together. I really couldn't ask for a better hunting partner.
-
Looks like I'll be shooting around 40 lbs. this year at my draw and have no doubts in the bows ability. Keep them close and keep your b-heads super sharp!!!!

I really liked this thread. Anybody have any pics to add?

Wow! I forgot all about this thread. Didn't even know it was still around. Great pics and still inspires me to get it done. My Harrelson longbow will be about 43 - 45 lbs when I go out this year. Can hardly wait for the season to arrive! :D

What do you all say on the subject of 2 blade versus a 2 blade with bleeders? Thinking about Magnus 125s with bleeder blades or a solid 2 blade. I hope to submit my first big game trad animal this year! The only reason to wish for a short summer.
-
Bleeders are awesome

Glad I looked back at this thread. I have been shooting a 43# RER, 43# Big River and 45# bear Kodiak. My buddies kept telling me I needed to get something in the 5-# range cause I can handle it. I ordered a Leon Stewart Slammer at 45# a month or so ago. I let my buddies convince me to change it to 50-51#. Well yesterday after shooting awhile with a 3D course with a 50# Slammer I came home to read thru this thread again and realized there was no reason for what I hunt that I needed more than 45#. Called Leon back today and changed my order. Interestingly Leon said that 45# would be a lot more fun to shoot on the 3D course and more than enough to kill anything I am after. He said he was going to try to talk me out of the change the last time but ttys to avoid telling people what they want. Probably good advice.
-
This thread is just plain cool. There's likely a reason the most popular bow weight was around 45# for years.
Great pictures and phenomenal accomplishments.
Yeah, I'd enjoy looking at trad bow harvests no matter the weight on the bow though

I've shot 40-45# for the past 5 years. Knowing those bows don't have as much punch as a 55-60# bow, I've always used a two blade broadhead without any problems. Now the cool thing this year is with Bill Dunn's new three blade broadhead, I feel very confidant that it will take anything I'm after with 45# or less bow and produce a better tracking trail...tippit

I like this post. I am seventy-two yrs old and don't have the upper body strength that I used to have and I don't exercise as much as I probably should. I have various bows that range from 35# to 61#. I feel most comfortable with bows around 45#. This is what I will probably hunt with this fall unless I can gain a few more pounds and still shoot accurately....Dave

From this last November.
41# 1966 Bear Grizzly.
WW broadhead with 250 gr. total up front.
Hunting with my brother and a buddy on an annual bowhunting trip to Michigan (our 15th year). Three days left in the hunt, and I was out at first light in a small white oak that sits at the edge of a swamp / swail that divides some open ground and a small wood lot. Stand is not more than 10' off the ground, and the branches on the oak afford great concealment.
Not 5 minutes on stand, and this deer came in from the open ground on the swamp side of me. I shot him through the lungs at approx 12 yards.
He ran in a loop of about 40 yards that ended on the far edge of a thicket. I couldn't see him, but I knew that he had stopped running. After about 30 seconds of silence, I heard him bound twice. Then heard him crash. Yeehaw!
As you can tell from my smile, I was pretty proud of this buck. I'd had a couple selfbow deer kills (two of them with bows in the low 40#'s), but this was my first with a recurve in my third year of trying one. Can't wait for the 2014 hunt!

This thread has been an inspiration to me! Following a non-archery related injury, I had to drop all the way down to 28# at my draw length, and begin the long, slow, "rehabilitation thing". While I may never get back to 55#, I am shooting 45# pretty well and look forward to deer and small game, this year! My thanks, folks!

I just spent the last 45min. going through this thread again. Feeling the pressure of getting my first deer ever and wanted some encouragement! Thank you to all who have posted and shared your accomplishments here.

My '14 WY pronghorn at Spearhead Ranch. Used my Hummingbird Kingfisher TD longbow, 44# @28 (my draw length), an Easton autumn orange 2117 tipped with a Bear greenie sans bleeder. Didn't go far. That's my blind, background left.

Ooops. I forgot that I posted here 3 1/2 years ago. At least my memory still works for the details of my bow/arrow/penetration. I think I can remember details of a hunt better than remembering what my wife just asked me to do.

Doug...I've had that picture/specs saved for awhile in a file that I have on bow weight...been a confidence builder for a long time and I'm elk hunting with a similar rig this fall

Love this thread. I started with a 53# recurve a few years back. Never got a shot with it. Got a 42# last year and loved shooting it, but was a little unsure about hunting with it. Decided to after consulting on TG, but never got a shot with it either. Got my first brand new bow this spring and opted to go with 47# after a lot of thinking. Got two shots opening weekend and both jumped the string. :( I went back to the old 42# Ben Pearson because it's almost unnaturally quiet. Hoping to get a shot with it soon. This thread reinforces my thought process on my two go to bows. Hope it works out for me as well.
-
Enjoying this thread. Hope to see 18 more pages. I may just go lighter on my next bow.
-
Just realized that my arrow wasn't an autumn orange 2117 but a CE Heritage 90 cut to 30" with a Bear greenie without bleeder. Memory becomes a problem at my age. :banghead:
-
Here is a few more to "add to the pot" ;) Both deer taken with a Black Magic ILF bow with wood/glass limbs, not a fast bow by any stretch but very quiet. Depending on the scale either 41 or 42 lbs at my draw of 28" arrows 480 grains. 150 lb+ buck was shot at 16 yards broadside with a VPA 3 blade, arrow went in till just the fletching was visible and pulled out in a step or two.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/yohon/IMG_1672_zpsfxptt93g.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/yohon/media/IMG_1672_zpsfxptt93g.jpg.html)
Shot this doe at 15 yards BUT used a 145 grain Snuffer. It hit the offside leg bone and still managed to poke the tip of the Snuffer thru the hide on the off side. Deer went 60 yards. Always loved Snuffers but figured I didnt have enough horsepower for them to work. Shows me again its not what you shoot em with but where you shoot em that counts!!

Poor picture here because it was the first night of the season and I wasn't prepared with my camera. We took the picture with an I pod. My 11 year old son Jacob shot this doe with a 33# @ 23" recurve. I set his max shot distance at 10 yards and opening night he was offered this shot at 8-9 yard. He shot right through the rib cage and the arrow stuck in the ground. The deer died 50 yards away and it only took about 5 seconds. His arrow was an Easton aluminum 1716 with an eskalite zwickey broad head.

This thread has become very interesting to me lately. I have shoulder surgery scheduled this month, and the doctor tells me I won't be pulling my regular weight bows (around 55#) for a while. I may not ever be able to pull them as well as I used to. These pictures do give me confidence, which is important, because I have always shot the heaviest bows I can handle. A word of caution - be careful how you wring out a mop, as it can seriously damage your shoulder.

45lb @28" Samick Red Stag at 17 yards. 680 gr rear tapered POC arrow, 290gr broadhead weight accomplished by 140gr grizz and 150gr woodyweight and about a 20% FOC. Went completely through, the buck walked 30 yards after the hit, and I watched him go down.
-
Have read this from pg. 1 trying to get a handle on my need to drop weight due to health reasons. This thread is reassuring as I've never hunted or shot anything with a bow under 55lbs, or more. Just ordered a new Widow CHX at 46@30 hope it works out.

David, it'll work. That 2" of extra draw helps you a lot!

Thank you for posting this thread.
I have gained a lot more confidence in, and respect for, my new 45# longbow.
Thanks for posting the arrow weight information. This has helped me in my decisions.
Regards,
Bill
-
I see absolutely no point in shooting more weight than this on anything in the lower 48 save grizz and maybe elk. Total confidence is had by this ol' redneck!
-
Congrats to everyone. Great job.
Might want to add thick shielded hogs to that list, husky.
-
Well Dalton, some people do see a benefit, because many times there is one...and Moose and Bison might should be added to the list along with heavy shielded boars. Unless you can always, and I mean always, make the perfect shot into the small soft spot.....big sharks and big gators.
Nice pics guys n gals...thanks for sharing!

A man with experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument or absolute proclamation. Well said.
-
If I wasn't having difficulty with my computer I would post a photo of my buck I shot with a 40# recurve and Bear razor head. It was obviously adequate as the buck was dead within 74 yards.
For me, I think there is a point to shoot heavier.
I just put in for a moose, elk and sheep hunting permit. I intend to shoot the same bow all hunting season. Besides the possibility of hunting one of these animals I am already planning on bear and whitetail.
I want my shooting to be as consistent, as dialed in if you will as I can get it. So no jumping between lighter and heavier bows, different weight arrows, etc. Same bow, same arrow for everything. Seems to make sense to me. It is one more thing I can control, even if it just a confidence thing.
-
Yes, and not to mention some folks shoot heavier bows better, me being one of them.
Great thread though, lots of nice deer kills for sure. Congrats!
-
Anybody else have pictures? I just purchased a 45lb Hummingbird King Fisher. I am pulling it 30" so its probably close to 51lbs or so. I have always shot around 55 or 56 lbs at my draw weight. I don't guess I will have any problems.

Didnt mean to sound combative at all, i just meant i personally cant justify bumping up in weight to hunt anything in NC. For things that would be unique for me like elk, moose, grizz, or tatonka i can definitely see the need to shoot more, luckily for me, this most of the time means bigger vitals because i sure as heck cant be as accurate with more weight. :knothead:
Like i said though, no disrespect meant at all.
-
Tons of happy hunters in this one enjoy scanning through and appreciating how many that have takin some fine animals with a stick and string!!!! Can't Wait!!!
-
I just got a 45@27 thunderchild from Big Jim. I feel good with it and know if I shoot straight it will get it done.RC
-
Well, it doesn't count until I see some pics of that bow Robert, l. I know you will get it done.
-
This thread is very encouraging. I have been struggling with age and injury related shoulder arthritis, and it is obvious that I need to move down in draw weight (again) to prevent the total ruination of my shoulder joint. The fact that a well tuned bow in the 40-45 pound range will still get the job done on most North American big game means that I can keep hunting with a bow well into my retirement years.
-
Joe....you have me very interested in those Centaurs for sure. I'm going to order some Battle Axes and have a little chat with him.
-
Terry... I am amazed by the performance of the Centaur bows. The one I have is used but fairly new -- and I have an upgraded, higher-performance model on order. I'll fill you in on what I know and send you some photos.
-
Terry,
I also shoot a centaur.. It is such a good bow. I don't know that I have held a better bow in my hands.. yet. Not saying they don't exist, just saying I like this one the most.
-
Guys I know there are more. I would like to keep this thread going

I think what's important is to shoot a well tuned bow that you are accurate and confident with.
Personally, I practice for the animals that I hunt(hogs and deer),that translates to close shots with a bow I can handle.
I've lost count of how many hogs I've seen killed with bows under 45# draw weight(several under 40#). I don't know that we've had a hunter in camp (in 6 years) that's had a bow 60# or above.Just my 2 cents. Great pics! Keep em coming.
-
Don't make me come down there with a heavy bow, lol.
-
One of the best threads I've ever read no matter what the bow weight is . It is encouraging to see all the game taken with bows in the 40's . As I get older I have full confidence that I can take game effectively moving down in weight after reading thru this thread.
-
What a thread.

Good one Pat. :biglaugh:

By far the best thread I ever started! Unfortunately, I never got to fulfill my dream of taking an animal with my bows but, such is life. Thank you all for sharing your trophies!

I hope to add my pictures to this thread this fall. I've only killed at 50lbs with a longbow and a recurve...Decided to start over and rebuild my shooting foundation this last year and got myself a 40lb longbow. The model I got is only 3fps slower than my 50lb longbow shooting the same arrows, and I had no problem blowing through deer...I can't see 3fps having any change on that.
-
4 years ago I built my own bow with the help of a buddy. I call it "Pac-a-Whallop" It is 44#.
3 years ago I shot a small doe with my bow. Wood arrows & 165gr Ace Express. 20 yard shot and the arrow came out the offside by about 12". 40 yard recovery.
(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc157/pactac/ARROW%202012/mydoe.jpg) (http://s214.photobucket.com/user/pactac/media/ARROW%202012/mydoe.jpg.html)
Last year I got this 8 point with the same bow. 20 yard shot. Same wood arrow/broadhead combo as with the doe. 100 yard recovery. The arrow passed through but did not fall out until he fell. The arrow was beside the deer where he fell & was good to hunt with again after washing it off & sharpening.

Good for you Pac. I imagine there's nothing quite like taking a game animal with a bow you built yourself. Would love to make one myself but facilities are limited.

Some great harvests here and I agree with the many whom have said that this is a great thread! Congrats to all!
Here are a few "light bow" harvests from Pennsylvania...

These above were all "First Traditional harvests" for my family and I since we started this wonderful sport.
And last year...
Dad's buck from 11/2/15...same setup as above...

And my buck from 11/12/15, State Forest Land, 66" Border Black Douglas, 41@28" (hunted with the light limbs). 9 yard shot and near pass through...

I'll have to agree with you on that. A beauty. Did you get it scored?

He's right at 160". 13 points, but he doesn't have a lot of length up front...not that I cared! He's a gladiator...cataract over his left eye.
Here's the thread with details and more pics:

I am new to the 40-45 game (see my shoulder replacement thread) and I will soon have 2 bows that are 43 pounds at 29" -- both Centaurs. One is a Chimera that I bought used after I got the diagnosis that I would need a new shoulder joint. The other is a Triple Carbon Elite that I ordered to give me some extra recovery motivation after the surgery.
This thread gives me a lot of confidence that my 43# at 29" bows will get the job done with sharp broadheads and well-tuned arrows.
Thanks for all of the great photos. Keep them coming.
-
This is a great thread. All my bows are 50@28", so with my 26-1/2" draw they are right at 46-47 lbs. Here are a few pics from my phone.

Sika doe taken with a 41 lb Titan and a Snuffer, broadhead passed thru and into the ground but Sika are so short she broke it off when she took off, went 50 yards
(http://i.imgur.com/AmXgCyu.jpg)
18 yards shot on a VA doe with the same Titan and a Snuffer. Quartering away, broadhead punched thru off side shoulder but stayed in the 100 yards or so the deer went.
Same Titan but used a VPA at 20 yards, complete pass thru and deer went 75 yards with a profuse blood trail.
Again and again, it's not what you shoot its where ya put it and whatever you put in the good spot make sure its really sharp and you'll be gold.

My 2016 buck taken with bw PLV 45@26". Gold tip 500 and 175vpa 3 blade. Had a complete pass through on him with about 60 yard blood trail. It was my first year returning to trad after about 20 years of shooting wheel bows. Was always told you needed a lot of poundage to kill an animal and that was part of the reason I stuck to compound. Starting looking at info on this website and found out that wasn't the case especially after seeing this thread! Put it where it counts and you'll have no problems!

Thanks Ben, I enjoy having the photos. I will need them later in life when I lose my mind to be able to remember the events of the day. Sure wish I had pics of them all from 1984 until I started taking pics.

I got full penetration but not a pass through. I believe I clipped the shoulder going in and the offside shoulder going out. Otherwise, I think it would have been a pass through.

I've been watching and enjoying this thread for a while. It's time I posted a few of my own.

Is there an accepted "norm" as far as arrow weight per pound of draw with bows in the 40-45# range? I recently acquired a RER that is 43# at 28", and I am trying to tailor my arrows to it. I have always used arrows of 600ish grains out of bows 50-55#, so I think I need to lighten them up some.

You'll probably get a lot of different answers to this. Personally I like arrows around 450-500grs on deer sizes game if I'm hunting w/ bows under 50#.

I am enjoying this thread more and more! A couple or so years ago, I had surgery on my left shoulder, and luckily I regained the ability to pull my current hunting bows in the 50 - 55# range. This is down considerably from the 65# bow I hunted with for years. Now, my right shoulder is showing some of the symptoms my left one did. I fear that the 40 - 45# range may become the max I can handle. That really doesn't bother too much, as my very first deer was taken with a 45# Ben Pearson recurve, but I would hate to think that would leave me with nearly a dozen bows I won't be able to shoot.

40@27" Howard Hill Tembo and a 145gr Snuffer.15 yard shot while the buck was working an overhanging branch. Think I've hit on a combo that I may be pushing things a bit as far as getting good penetration, going to start shooting grizzly Instinct heads with this bow and see what we get...
-
Sam: Think of all of the 45# bows you can buy with the money you get from selling the heavy ones..... It's all about having perspective as we age.
Yohon: Nice deer.

It's good to see this thread still active! I love looking through all the success hunters have had with lighter equipment. All of my kills have been with 48-52#, except for small game. But it's nice to have proof to show the rookies and nonbeliever's of what can be accomplished. Great job everyone!

Several years ago I had a wheel shooter come up to me while I was hunting with my 45# K-mag.
He asked me " can you actually kill something with that?"

My wife shoots 40# at about 26. This buck was at 12 yards. Complete pass through from a ground blind on a double lung dead sideways hit and I had to wiggle the firmly embedded Grizzly on the 2016 shaft from a tree root. He didn't even know he was hit and wondered off 40 yards and fell over. She has cleanly killed several deer with this set up. Girl can shoot!
-
A doe she took with the same set up.

Found this guy last year and took him with a 44@30 BW 2114 shaft and a 145 grizzly. Hard shoulder hit going in. Almost made it all the way through the opposite side. He went maybe 25 yards and fell over. Really glad I was using a Grizzly.

Will stir up the hornets nest - heavy vs light courtesy the awesome results that you guys have been having as soon as the rains let up.
It seems to me that penetration is more to do with momentum as opposed to outright speed.
Great shots!
-
Ive always found that penetration favors weight (think momentum) over speed. Light and fast generally for me hasnt been good for penetration but heavy arrows regardlessof speed have always done well for me

This WV buck was a 14 yard shot with a #44@30 BW PMA, cedar arrow and 140 grizzly. I draw about 29 1/2. Hit was behind the ribs going in and it stopped against the off leg bone. Plenty of penetration to get it done. I wish I would have known long ago just how effective the lighter bows were. I wouldn't have shot such heavy bows for so long. BTW. That is the sixth big game animal that particular grizzly head has taken with that bow. It only took a little touching up to make it ready for #7! Great heads.

I took this buck on 11/2/18 using a 56" Toelke PIKA 40#@29". I used a homemade cedar arrow 5/16" tapered, with a grizzly single bevel. Shot was around 10-12 yards broadside. He ran about 80 yards. Hit was in lungs, broadhead went between ribs and hit offside shoulder. No blood trail, no blood where he lay, but with shoulder keeping arrow from exiting this is understandable. I'll try to post a pic of him hanging so you'll have a better idea of his size.

I snowshoed into camp to check everything and get some shooting in. I had set some ant bait out as it appeared we have a small carpenter ant issue inside my camp.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t get much stumping done with thigh deep snow. Fortunately, I was able to make the most of the carpenter ant issue.
Full disclosure—— these ants, while alive had injested poison, so although they are free ranging, both the poison and the snow slowed them down a tad.
I placed a handful on a softball sized ice chunk and backed up to about 12 yards.
I had a small “ant-fever” attack and shot over them on the first attempt. I’ll have to wait until spring to recover that arrow.
My second shot was right on and the 500 grain ACE blunt tipped arrow exploded both the ants and ice.
I was only able to find one intact body. I’m thinking shoulder mount.

Im switching this year to a 40 pound bow. Curious of who uses three blades? I like them but worry about penetration/passthru's
-
Slickhead.....dont worry about it, all the ones I killed last year were with 3 blades...mostly VPA 175 gr but shot 2 or 3 with Snuffers. The VPA in the longer head like the 175 gr on up are long and lean and penetrate like crazy but leave excellent holes/bloodtrails. Get them real sharp and you wont notice a difference in penetration compared to a 2 blade....or at least I have not. I wish I had gone to the VPA 3 blade years ago.

44@30". Thought I missed it at first since this small pack of porkers were moving through pretty quick. Moving shot and he acted more spooked than hit. Arrow was sticking a few inches in the dirt and didn't see the blood on it till I pulled it out. Pig only went about 20 yds. Missed his lungs but clipped the artery right behind them. Zwickey, No Mercy.

I was cleaning in my workshop last week and found this blast from the past picture that fits the 40-45lb harvest criteria. I took this buck in 2007 with my favorite longbow (and still my favorite shooting bow ever), a Thunderstick that pulls 42#@27" and has been with me 20+ years now. I was 26 then.....almost 40 now :biglaugh:

Talk about inspiration! This has been some great reading. Awesome stuff from everyone and hopefully I can contribute soon.
-
I am not a big picture taker but surface it to say I have taken a pretty good bunch of deer and a few other critters with bows from 40-45#
I still have a 52# Black Widow PLX that I shoot a bit. Its kept in reserve for a time when I may get a chance at something larger although that opportunity is rapidly diminishing. My go to is a PLII 45@28 with a new PLX Osage and Cocobolo 39@ 28 hanging on the wall behind me, and an old Dacron string MA III 45# @28 also available for use.
-
Planning to be toting this fall a Bob Lee Ultimate...45@28...
-
Well this has been inspiring , I just read all 27 pages. I’ve never hunted with anything much less than 56 lbs , even through several surgeries and such. Last year I found I had the big C which resulted in surgery and a couple different treatment plans and such, which for now have me doing well but kinda beat down. So I ordered a 45@27 longbow from my buddy Dave Albright. I was really concerned about dropping bow and arrow weight but the new bow really does well with a 500 grain arrow , this thread has instilled new confidence after reading and seeing all the success stories and pics. So thanks guys hopefully I can contribute this fall.
-
I have been shooting a 40# HHA Cheetah a lot this spring while working on form, and I may just deer hunt with some. It is really fun to shoot. I shoot wood arrows that are 5/16" in diameter. What size arrows do you regular shooters/hunters use? I have some in 11/32", but I just prefer the way the smaller 5/16 shafts shoot. I don't know if the lighter arrows significantly affect the performance. They are very accurate and I am totally confident out to 15 yd. or a trifle more. Thanks for your help.
-
Got some light stuff that should be ready this year some time. Hopefully I will be able to contribute before too long.
-
Am very much hoping to add to this great thread.

Guided a gentleman yesterday shooting a 42 @ 25 Thunderchild with an arrow tip with a 2 1/16' wide Treeshark...he draws 25"s...
The shot was taken on the deer at 16 yards...complete pass thru...deer traveled less than 25 yards and expired...entrance cut was 4 1/4 inches while the exit cut was 2 1/2"s(used a tape measure)....typical Simmon's Treeshark carnage....
-
Was blessed with this early season doe yesterday evening. Shot was 10 yds broadside. Bow was a Widow PCH 40#@27". I used a pretty heavy arrow--- black eagle instinct, 100 gr outsert, 175 gr Zwickey Eskimo for a total of 550grs. I found the arrow about 50 yds into the trail. Two holes. Im holding up my finger as this was my second day hunting w a recurve and my first deer taken w a recurve--- ive always been a longbow guy, but am liking the mass weight of the Widow.

I am very interested in what broadheads you guys are using. Is anyone shooting a three blade with a true 40# bow and how is penetration? Thanks, Greg
-
GregD- I shoot a 400 spine Beman Bowhunter shaft fletched with 3-4" right wing parabolic feathers, Gold Tip insert that is 12 grains I believe and a 250 grain VPA 3 blade broadhead. Total arrow weight is right at 530 grains according to my old balance beam scale. Bow was a Black Widow PT that pulls 45# at my 27.5" draw.
The deer I shot this season was quartering away. Arrow entered the ribs on the right side and passed thru liver, lung and top of the heart and exited in front of the left front leg. Arrow stuck in the ground and the deer rand 15 to 20 yards, stood for a few seconds and fell over.

What a awesome thread!! I just recently picked upa lightweight boblee curve absolutely love the bow and 44# at my draw really want to take it hunting late season and never shot lightweight bows but after looking through these pages its no question sharp broadheads and shot placement is key as always! Shooting light bows are so enjoyable I must say I am lucky to have a 29" draw and my arrows are around 600 grains gonna try for some luck after Christmas
-
Perfect for those NE whitetails.

More low 40's gettin it .

Hoping to add a turkey or two to this thread here before long with my new Black Widow!
-
Early season doe. 6yds. Black Widow PCHX 40#@27". Black Eagle Instinct .500 w 100 gr outsert and 175 Zwickey Eskimo for total weight of 530 grs ( if i recall correctly). Arrow made two holes and was found about 20 yds down the trail. Doe ran 80 yds and piled up.
-
Just bringing to the top, I’m still trying to convince myself that dropping 10 lbs of bow weight to 45 at my 27” draw is ok and probably beneficial overall for whitetail and pigs , I’m told that I’m really hard headed and stuck in my ways, but I dunno I’m 67 and have shot low 60’s upper 50’s pretty much all my life with pretty good results. I can still handle the weight but a newly acquired 45@27 64” r/d longbow sure is sweet.

This is the closest that I could come. Bow is probably around 45#, but probably 48# at my draw. The fact that it is an all fiberglass bow from the late 1950's should make it fall in that performance range though.

Could I get more details about your fiberglass bow like maker and model and whether you are using a ff string, etc? Thanks!
-
Sure Kelly,
It is Paul Bunyan 100 recurve. I have 3 of them now, and they really don't seem to be close to marked weight. This one scales 50# @ 30", rather than the 50# that it is marked. Funny thing is I just shot one of my new ones that is marked 55#, and I am guessing it to be all of that, and maybe more. My scale is packed up, but I just ordered another one today. Anyway, it has a fast flight string made by TenRing Strings. Great strings. I have way more wool on that string than I need. Very quiet bow. I also have a Paul Bunyan 300, and a ply flex. I think the Paul Bunyan is likely the best all fiberglass recurve that was made, but I don't want to step on anyone's toes that feels otherwise. The 300 is nice, but doesn't have as much curve to it. I think it is 66", compared to the 61" 100. I may actually do some chrono work with them. That 55# seems more stout than my 60# model.
-
I’ve been waiting to add to this since I dropped down in weight due to shoulder. Took this 8 with a 46# Treadway Black Forest and a 175 VPA

It's quite fascinating to realise that a modern bow of 40lb is just as fast as a 50 pounder that was made in the 70/80s.
My fist bow was a Slazenger flat bow about 30lb when I was 13 or so, kept the larder full of Rabbits and the odd Pheasant.
This was all back in the 60s when I didn't know better as your not supposed to hunt with a bow over here.
I progressed to 40/45 and then to 50/55 lb bows and finally a 61 lb H&H big five, and now at 71 going back to 40/45s
And I must say I like them best.
This as been a wonderful thread and all credit to those who have contributed well done, I have learned a great deal from you gent's.

WOW!!! This thread has been around a while..... Almost 10 years, and 32 pages.
We've lost a bunch of pictures over the years. But, last night just for giggles, I took a count.....
10 Bears, 3 Elk, 2 Caribou, and 2 Moose, including a Pope & Young Bull taken with a 41# recurve!!! :readit:
Check out page 6!!!
Mighty impressive..... :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:

Have set up light poundage bows and built arrows for three hunters the past few years. All have been resoundingly successful.
My buddy harvested four deer last year with a 37# bow at his draw length. All pass thru’s and short recoveries. Set up this 1965 Bear Kodiak Magnum and built the arrow just prior to season….…34#s at my buddy’s actual draw . He harvested this deer yesterday….17 yard shot…complete pass thru and 30 yard recovery….He is 5 for 5…
-
5 for 5 is pretty damn impressive, Scott!!!!!
Congratulations, to both of you!!!!! :clapper: :clapper:

I took this doe last evening. As the arrow shows, she was hard quartering away when I shot her at a distance of around 20 yards. The bow is 43 lbs@28 and I have a draw length just a little over 27 inches. The arrow is a 5mm FMJ with a 150 grain Silver Flame and the whole arrow weighs in at 526 grains. I am quite pleased at the total performance.

Nice shot John! She bled a touch eh?

Good job guys
I’m new to this having hunted one day with a 43# bow
I hunted with bows 60# and Up for the last 47 years
Then I struggled drawing at a deer on Blackbeard Last December
Can’t have that!!
Made some changes soon as I got home
And I am really looking forward to continuing with this light bow
<><

Great pics all around!! After going through these pages my upcoming time in the woods for bear season in September can't get here fast enough. Congrats on all your success guys/gals!! :clapper:

I’ve dropped down to 49# a couple years ago from 53# from 61 a few years ago. Shoulder injuries at work in construction. Last year I got a 43# longbow identical to my 49# er. First time I shot it was on a javelina hunt in Texas last year. Hadn’t been able to shoot for a month due to ulnar nerve in my elbow acting up. Took 2 Navi’s with it. I’m liking it a lot
-
Since all of my bows are under 45# at my DL now, I get to add stuff to this thread! Blacktail Columbian longbow, 43-44# at my DL.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I used a 150gr German Kinetic XL broadhead (1.5” wide), and it made a pretty good hole.

I always hunt with 60 lb bows but two years ago I had problems in both shoulders and had to drop weight and lay completely off shooting for over 10 months. This Arkansas Black Bear was about the third shot that I made in almost 11 months to allow my shoulders to get better. This bow is a sinew backed juniper that I cut off my place and made it is 45 @ 26 on a cold day and around 40 on warm days.
Blew through the bear at around 15 yards using a single bevel Grizzly on a Douglas Fir Surewood shaft.

This is my first trad deer from Winter bow after taking up the recurve the week of Thanksgiving. It’s an EXE Scream with Galaxy Bronze Star limbs. 43lbs on my fingers. Shot with a 32" GT Hunter, 4-4" feathers, Nockturnal Lighted Nock, 100 Grain original Muzzy 3 Blade and 120 grain insert for a TAW of 535 grains. Blew through the left shoulder blade and poked a hole in the far blade. I was shocked at the performance when I dressed it.

Many wonderful harvests.

First sit for this season last night. Had a nice sized doe come in and offer me a broadside shot at about 6 yards. Had a bit of a tough time finding her as the dew set in and she’d ran off thru a 3’-4’ high grass field. My lovely wife found the blood trail and the doe had only ran around 60 or 65 yards. Black Widow PTF, 60” long and 43# at my draw length. Arrow was an Easton 6.5 500 spine carbon with a 12 grain insert and a 250 grain VPA 3 blade.
Only took pictures of the entrance and exit holes as I was in a hurry to get her to the barn and hung.

Hot Dang, that is some awesome news! There is a place not far from me owned by the Stark Industries forestry company, that has a small herd I've run into a couple times in the past. They only allow bowhunting on their property so, I might look more into elk now.

Nice bear!
I generally like to use bows in the 50-52 lb range. But I recently traded into a 44# Liberty Edge. It seems to fit me quite well. I am going to wait until after hunting season to tune it, but I see possibilities with this bow.
If I ever try 3D, I think this is the bow for that.

It's a week of firsts for me. Last Friday I killed the largest buck of my life a big NJ public land 12 point and it was my first buck with a recurve. Then I killed my first deer a doe with a longbow yesterday. The bow I used, I bought from the estate sale of a gentleman named Horace Eckman who passed away a few months ago in his 90's. He is a legend in NJ Archery. He competed in the 50's well into his later years. A few years ago after his wife passed away and knowing he wouldn't be around much longer he donated the money to build a 20 lane 40 yard indoor range for two local archery clubs to use and where I shoot and coach archery. I dedicated the doe to him. The bow was a Fleetwood Frontier 40@28 shooting Easton 6.5's 500 spine with Simmons Swamp Shark head.

Took this kudu in Namibia last March. Used the takedown longbow my friend, Ken Bullman built for me using one of KennyM’s designs. It’s 42# at my draw. Used gold tip skinny blems and Simmons timber shark head. The arrow weighed about 535gr…
That bull took a few leaps at the shot..then walked away..at about 60yds he started to wobble…few more steps and he tipped over. He was 12yds away when I shot..he was one of 2 good bulls in a group of seven that came to the water…it was exciting. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

My first trad kill in many years. I'm mostly a longbow guy, but this recurve belonged to my best friend who passed away a few years ago. It's a 45#, vintage, Bear Kodiak Hunter that is nearly as old as I am. It has been awhile since I did the research, but I believe I narrowed it down to being made between '69-'71.
