Guys,
Ive had a couple of guys inquiring about the hunt idea that mentioned on the NC turkey bowhunting thread. Seems there is quite a bit of interest, with that being said, i thought i would start a thread on it and see where it goes.
I was thinking about hunting some game land here in Ashe, (there are 3) I dont really want to put too much info out on the internet about it but there seems to be plenty of good sign on it. By good sign i mean plenty of rubs and scrapes and such, i have also bumped several deer while scouting.
I don't want anyone thinking however that this would be a cake walk with 5k deer running everywhere begging to get shot because that simply isn't the case. I have been lucky enough over the years to have access to a lot of properties, and when i scout this i don't get the impression that there are a million deer, but i do get the impression i could kill a stud in there. The terrain is steep, and a lot of walking will be a necessity. Climbing stand will be your best bet, and i can promise you that you will want a light one.
There is no hunting on public ground on Sundays, so a Thursday-saturday evening or friday and saturday would be our best bet i would think. I am still looking into campgrounds in the area, but at most it would be 12-15min away from the hunting area. Camping will be a blast, maybe we can put together a meal plan and eat good while we are "roughing it."
As far as dates, i really need to know what works best for you guys, i live here so i can hunt almost anytime so long as it doesnt interfere with a weekend i will be in OH. I plan on going to a PBS hunt sometime in late October early November (maybe both) put on by Mr. Holchin, so that kinda rules out late Oct as i can think of at least 3-4 that want to be on this hunt that are lined up for OH those weekends too.
That leaves us with the 3 weekends in Oct, the weekends of the 1st, 8th, and 15th. Maybe the end of September would work better for some? Like i said, we need to discuss that.
To be legal you will obviously need your NC license, as well as a Game Land license, which you can get for $15 at anywhere selling licenses.
For any flatlanders interested, it can get cold in Oct up here, I've hunted in snow in bow season plenty of times. More than likely though, it will be a nice temperature.
Forgive me, i am sure i have forgotten a ton of info, just point out all I've forgotten. You don't have to be from NC to join, but there really should be a limit of around 6-8 or so, but I'm sure life will happen, and people will have to cancel, so if you're interested let me know.
Well, lets see where it goes. Info i need to know from you guys is
1. Are you interested/coming.
2. What dates work best for you.
3. Any clever ideas for the hunt name
What say ye?
Dalton :coffee:

I am interested.
I have not hunted in NC, in the 18 years I have lived here. That is going to change this year. I went north-west of here 2 weeks ago, on a driving/exploring trip of NC game lands, but didn't make it to Ashe Co.
I can make most dates, as long as I know a bit in advance - need to make sure my work can be covered in my absence.
My skills are rusty as an old iron gate, I know. I may be lucky to see a white flag, much less have a shot. But I will do whatever needs to be done. And that means not for a deer, but to help ensure the quality of the trip for everyone involved.
If there is room, I am interested.
-
I am interested, maybe pin down a.month to set dates in? Do we stay in bow season or do we compete with rifle crowd? Don't bother me either way. I thing y'all's rifle opener is later than ours is in the east? I was just thinking be cool to camp when it is COOLER! LOL
Hunt name? Let me think
-
I'm interested, also….
When do acorns start to fall in the mountains? If we could time it with mast on the ground that might make for a better hunt and easier to pinpoint some good stand locations…
I like the end of September weekend just because its still hot here in the piedmont and I'm assuming it will be cooler in Ashe county which would be a good thing…
-
Still blazin here on the coast as well -
-
You better hope the acorns dont hit, nothing makes for harder hunting than when every oak tree on the mountain hits, total shot in the dark. Hopefully they will miss this year and we can find a few that produce and the deer will concentrate on them.
-
Interested

Great Idea Dalton.
I usually find when setting up trips like this is, you will never have a date that works for everyone.
Best thing to do is set a date now based on what you want and then see who can make it.
I look forward to hearing how this thing goes this fall.
Good luck and have fun.
-
True on the oaks if a heavy mast crop - Few trees producing is better but early season a food source we can focus on is a good thing….I'm assuming no food plots or anything like that on the GL...
I'm sure you mountain boys can help us on what they like to eat at that time of year in the mountains….
-
Sounds like it's destined to become the Three Top Trad Trek!
-
I do the best hunting the "hallway" between the bedroom and kitchen, matters not whats on the table in the kitchen if you can figure out the hallway. With that said, if the kitchen is 2k acres of oak trees its hard to figure out which part of the kitchen theyre going to!
-
1) Definitely interested in coming :wavey:
2) Early October would work the best for me!
3) BBD in NC (that'd be nice), The Ashe Deer Bash, Husky & the Boys. Haha there's a few options
I'm in Sneads Ferry right now but would be willing to make the trek. Been meaning to make one of these TradGang hunts
-
Dalton I'll try to help ya out on this one.
Jeff
-
I'll definitely need it if 6 or 8 make it.
Another thing that is going on in oh this fall is a scouting trip. Would anyone be interested in doing that one weekend this summer?
-
I'll make a summer scout trip. Whatever I can do to help.
-
Here are a few pics i finally got around to loading. I just snapped some shots of rubs while i was scouting to prove to my buddy ethan i had found deer lol. A couple of these are dang good rubs and the picture doesnt do it justice.

I was snapchatting the photos to ethan, and found a little bench that has deadly written all over it, loaded with rubs and scrapes.

Wow Dalton those are some immense rubs!
-

Dalton, I'm definitely interested, can come over for a day of scouting and can help with the cooking/planning.
Are you thinking about trying to get stands up or ground hunting in GMA?
-
You are more than welcome Mr. Parker, on one condition-you bring some of your sweet bows to play with!
I was thinking climbers, you can try the ground, but winds up here litteraly blow in circles so i dont think that it would be very productive.
-
LOL, heard that! I used to take it personal and thought the New River fickle winds were a Crumpler phenomenon. If you took the old adage "hunt the wind" literally, you'd be doing nothing but moving your stand the whole time. I have put up two stands to compensate, but most of the time it was to use one for a decoy. I generally don't get above the tops of the laurel for cover and it used to drive me crazy when they'd bust the location before I ever hunt it. I've hunted this area since the time that the only tree stands made were Bakers...that may date me, since they're probably 20 years older than Dalton, lol. The evolution of deer intelligence in that time is pretty amazing...from never looking up to rarely looking down. It's now even pretty common to see maternal does let the youngsters come in alone as decoys and lay back 50 yds. or so to bust the first movement you make. That kind of impudence used to earn junior a well placed hoof upside the head...now they're teaming up on me!
-
I'm interested in the trip. Hound hunting for bear starts in mid October. I would suggest going before that. Three top is a great place for bear.
-
I'm going to bring this one to the top. I am shooting my little fingers off in preparation for the IBO Trad Worlds here in two weeks, as soon as I get that out of the way, the deer itch will hit full force which means my Keens will take a beating.
I am thinking late July/early August for a scouting trip? Definitely on a Saturday. I am thinking either July 30th or Aug. 6th. What do you guys think?
Also, we need to set a concrete weekend for the actual hunt as i know several will need to plan accordingly. I am thinking Sept. 16/17 or 23/24. What say ye?
P.S. Sorry for letting the thread die down a bit, the whole wedding/moving thing has kept me pretty busy.
Dalton
-
I can make most any date work in advance. Set it up and we will try and make it.
-
Let set August 6th as the scouting date. That's a saturday. I guess the best plan of action is to meet for breakfast that morning then head into the hills. Stumping while scouting would be awesome as well. If we can get enough interest, we can divide and conquer from the various parking areas, its a pretty big area.
-
Dalton,
I'd be interested in this scouting trip. I'm in Yancy county, about 2 hours away.
-
Let me see Satyrdays usually good for me -
-
Awesome! Glad there is still interest!
-
Dalton, what time do you want to get started on Aug. 6? Jefferson is about 3 hour drive for me so I may drive up the night before and camp.
-
Id like to get an early start. Im a typical mountain boy i hate the heat!
-
I'm still interested. Just need the place and time to meet. I might make the drive up the night before, too, just need to make sure I can break away from work a little early on Friday.
-
Dalton, I agree about getting out early. Is there anyplace nearby you'd recommend for tent camping Friday night?
-
Il look to see what i can find. I know there are plenty in the 10-15 min away range from the public land. Il do some checking around and see what the best option will be.
-
Lets meet at Louises "sweet tea" cafe in jefferson, at 7pm on August 6th. They have pretty good breakfast. Thats about 15 minutes from the place were scouting. Bring some judos and blunts, plenty of water and a good attitude because its going to be hot and steep.
Il get an adress for that little cafe.
-
Is that the place we had dinner Dalton(with Bill and Dick Langer) ?
-
No that is Park Vista, Jim. This little place is near that little creek was that cory and i caught those big brownies.
-
Sorry want make the scouting trip. I'll be out of town.
Jeff
-
Dalton, I assume that's 7 AM, not PM?
-
Dalton, not being from around there I Googled Louise's Sweet Tea Cafe and it has no such restaurant or Cafe listed in Jefferson or West Jefferson. Do you have an address?
-
Its inside of Peoples Drug in West Jefferson.
-
423 E 2nd St
West Jefferson, NC 28694

-
Louise's Cafe it is, 7am. I will be there.
Really looking forward to it - thanks for all your time and efforts in organizing this outing.
-
Yessir, Mark, 7am. Im riding home from the trad worlds right now, but when i get home il see what i can do about some camping places.
-
1 week to go until the scouting trip! I have looked for camping places, but it seems jefferson is as close as i can find. That is about a 15min ride. How many are planning to join on the scouting expedition?
-
I am planning on being there.
-
My son and I are planning on attending
-
Wish I could but I have to serve the meal and help with the CTA shoot that day. Hope I can make the actual hunt.
-
No worries, Jeff. I hope you can make it too, it will be like a warm up for Ohio.
-
Dalton and Crew, I am having to bail on the scouting trip this Saturday. My wife injured her knee and we have company coming in from out of town for the weekend on Friday night and its panic city at home. If you see a nice tall 10 point, go ahead and push him out of the area and save me the embarrassment of a miss after the season opens.
-
Tomorrow is the day! 7am at the drugstore.
-
Heading to CTA's shoot with my son-in-law, Dalton.... sorry....
-
Hope you guys have a great day tomorrow! Wish I could have made this work. Good luck to all of you involved in this hunt.
-
No problem at all guys! Hopefully the hunt dates will work out to where you can join us then! I wish there was some way I could make both, Bud, those CTA shoots are always fun.
PS, my cell number is (336)620-1710 for anyone that needs to reach me, I know several cell service providers don't exactly have great service in Jefferson.
Look forward to it!

Jeff Cook (Rough Run) and I had a great time this morning scouting, we found some great spots with some great sign for both deer and bears. Really excited to get after them this fall I think we will do great. Here are some pics-

It was a great day! Too bad everyone else couldn't make it - well worth the efforts just for the beauty, not to mention the scouting info.
Big thank you to Dalton - his knowledge of this area was/is invaluable, and his willingness to share this with the TG gang is awesome.
Really looking forward to getting to know some more TGers through the rest of the season, and exploring this great, remote area more.
-
I am Interested if it isn't full yet,,, dates I don't care, Name doesn't matter.
-
You are more than welcome! Jeff and I walked for 4 hrs, mapped where we went only to realize we didn't even touch it. There is plenty of room.
-
Wish I could have made it But the little woman wanted to go do a little school shopping for the kids. Hated to say no because I'm headed to Colorado in in a couple of weeks.
Jeff

Rattlesnake country, good place to train for Colorado.

Rattlesnake country, good place to train for Colorado.
-
Did it get a little warm up in those mountains?
I really want to get after the Bears this fall here in NC. Could you tell if there are acorns?
-
Jeff, it never rained but my shirt looked like it poured haha. It was real hot. There was plenty of acorns also, actually it kind of worried me to see as many as I did, it makes for tough hunting when there is too many. Lots and lots of bear sign
-
1. Interested 2. 9/24; 10/1 weekends. 3. "Tar-heel Trailers"?
-
Nice pics.
-
A little over a month to go until the hunt! I put some more miles on my keeps this afternoon after church. Found two great looking saddles on of which I deployed a cheap trail camera. My buddy has has a camera out on another saddle, and has had some mind blowing pics.
Getting closers folks!
-
Can we see the pics!
-
I can't wait to follow your hunt on here! Best of luck to you guys!
-
Has the date been set for the hunt?
Jeff
-
Let's do Thursday September. 29- Saturday Oct. 1st for the hunt (tentative.) I realize not everyone can make that, if it becomes apparent that no one can make that here in a few days, we will adjust accordingly. Let's just see who all can make it, that would be a great weekend for me, so we'll just start there.
Also, I know everyone can't make it all the days, that is totally fine. If you can only make it a day or two you will still be 100% welcome.
There are several options for camping, all about 15 min. Away, where this place is at is kind of remote so we really won't find camping any closers.
Let me know what you guys are thinking! Well try to figure it out to optimize turn out!
-
Those dates look good for me.
-
A week and a little more than a half to go guys! Jeff and I are actually going to try a spot or two on the game lands this evening, I found some hot white oaks a week or so ago. I also put a camera on them, so maybe some motivation will be on the card.
What's everyone thoughts? How's the turnout looking? If
-
And those dates (Sept.29-oct. 1) that's next Thursday through Saturday. I realize you may can only hunt a day or two and that's fine, but I figured I'd add in Thursday because as you no game lands are a no go in NC on sundays.
