I am wanting to check my own new shafts. Ive never had one. Is there one in particular I should be looking at?

The one by ace is nice. If you want to make one, the ones with the dial caliper are pretty easy to make. I made one. I see you are from Iowa, I am in SE Iowa and if you are close by, you are welcome to use mine to try it. Plus I have the plans around here somewhere.

I got the Ace wall mount model. It works great and it's conveniently hangs out of the way. I checked the calibration with some aluminum arrows and it was spot on.

Lefty, Thanks for the offer. I am near Cedar Rapids.
I have seen some plans for building them. I may go that way.

google spine testers.... you can build your own for about $40 with a dial indicator, a couple shelf brackets, and some fishing weights.

I live in Mt Pleasant and work in Iowa City. I built mine with online plans by Jim Hill. Don't know if they are still floating around, but they were easy to follow and it works great. Most of the cost is in the dial caliper.

I built this one for virtually nothing using online plans and scrap wood. Works perfect.

Im well acquainted with google. That always the first place I look. There are lots of plans out there but some are pretty crude. I just need to have a little more faith. My concerns always go back to accuracy.

A $150 commercial spine tester will not be quantum degrees more accurate than a homemade spine tester. You basically are only measuring deflection and you can do that with two nails in the wall, a 2# weight and a ruler.
