Went up to Canada with 2 buddies (I was the only trad) on a Bear hunt this past week and had a blast. I went with a new Outfitter by the name of Moose Mountain Outfitters and they were better than I could have asked for. It is a husband wife deal, He runs the baits and she cooks. Really well I might add. We arrived last friday around noon and got all situated. Things started off pretty fast as my buddy Gary shot one at 6:00 the first evening. I got blanked. I sat 11 hours saturday and only saw a Snowshoe hare and a few squirrels. Guy our outfitter said maybe we should go in at day light so I was up at 4:00 and in the stand by 5. I had been setting there for 35-40 minutes and was just opening up a muffin I had packed for a snack when I heard a huffing sound behind me on the trail I walked in on. I slowly turned to see what looked to be a pretty fair sized bear. He had his head down sniffing a pile of crap. At that moment I stood and got ready while he was preoccupied. Slowly he lumbered my way walking within 3 yards of my stand. He kept walking past straight away towards the barrel not giving a good shot angle. He made it to 10 yards and stopped to sniff where some coco had been spilled out on the ground. He then made a fatal mistake of taking a step to the right to smell another crap pile exposing his vitals. At that point everything went on auto pilot, the Tall Tines came back and the next thing I knew he was barreling away with the fletchings of a 2117 sticking out in just the right spot. He only went 30-40 yards and gave the death moan in less than 10 seconds. The autopsy revealed the Cutthroat went thru both lungs and sliced the heart sticking in the off side leg.

Man! That's a beautiful bear. Congrats!

After getting it skinned and quartered up we went and ran baits with the outfitter. Even had time to get in a little fishing. Fresh Canadian fish is about as good as it gets. All in all it was probably one of the better trips I've ever had. This was my first Outfitted hunt and it was a real pleasure.

Brushwolf, I gave the skulls to your dad to sick the beetles on. I told him I might have to slip up and check out those bows you've been building when I pick them up. By the way that auction bow was a beauty.

Thanks for the congrats guys. It was nice to get this one off the list. Been waiting 17 years to do a Spring Ontario Bear hunt. Glad they finally opened it back up to non residents. Really did have a blast. Thank god for Thermocells and DEET.

Beautiful bear! Congrats! Stop down sometime when you get a chance.

Very nice!!! I was up in NW Ontario the last week of May. My son connected with his compound, but I didn't get a chance at one. Fishing is tremendous in the spring! I'm glad that they finally opened up the spring non resident season as well!
Congrats again on a fine bear!

Congratulations!
Not only is that an above average size bear, with nice fur, and a white blaze - which is a great bear... but I assume it that it's the first bear you shoot at and you made a perfect shot.
As an old bear hunting guide, I really appreciate that!
Maybe you did shoot a bear before somewhere else, but anyhow, still an excellent job and a great bear.
-
NICE! congrats!
-
Ken, you are correct it was my first Bear hunt and I'm tickled pink with him. Practice everyday sure helps with the shooting. It was automatic as instinct took over. Thanks.
-
Fantastic John, and I'm certain that the skull will be over 18" cleaned and dried - a little bonus souvenir.
-
That's a beauty! Congrats. Thanks for sharing the story.
-
Congrats on an awesome bear! A hunt like this is very high on my bucket list!

Hi Bucknut,
great story and hunt thx for sharing.
Could you please post the outfitters link.
Can't find them in the net get only a outfitter for duckhunts.
thx
-
Sorry, I guess I miss wrote the name. They are just getting their website up and have a litle bit on facebook. moosemountainbearoutfitters.com/ They had an opportunity to buy the local outfitters business and since this was the first spring Bear season since 1998 they jumped on it. They had a lot of fast work to do, but pulled thru with only 2 months to work. I think they will be a great outfit in the near future and would not hesitate to go back.
