Title: maps for Colorado elk hunt

What source for maps to hunt elk in Colorado?  Looking at where I can buy quality topo paper maps.  I read mention that there may be maps produced specifically for units?  Any ideas?  Not talking apps....I got that covered.

I buy USGS topo maps from the USGS. Others have other preferences.

Go here for loads of info and you can print them as well.

I don't buy or print maps anymore.  I use Back Country Navigator on my phone.  Gaia maps for iPhone does the same thing.

The problem with most topo maps is they are way out of date and show roads that no longer are open or don't show new roads.

BCN is no different as far as topo goes but you can also use aerial photo maps with topo markups as well as accurate road and place markups.

There is also an overlay that delineates private and public land.

I have a pretty good sized collection of topo maps and if you know what areas you are interested in, let me know.  If mine match you can have them.

Also, there are eight national forests in Colorado and their is an up to date map for each of them.  Also BLM maps if they intersect your areas of interest.

Have a guy down in town that has all the maps you will need for our area , very cheap....

MyTopo used USGS maps info as a base and thru them you can custom make your own map, that is, instead of having to buy (and carry, and use) five or six different USGS maps because the spot you picked is smack on the edge of all of them.

It is water resistant, durable and they are quick !

Rmsgear sells some foldout GMU maps, I couldn't tell you if they are on their website, call them if they aren't. I actually bought one this year as I'm going someplace new

Thanks all for the help and suggestions.  Sam;  the map connection you have sounds good.  I'll use some of the ideas from on here to study the area before I get there (and of course Google Earth too.

onX hunt is an app that lets you see so much more.  The app is free but the premium version is like $30 per state.  It will even show who owns what property.  We use it when we hunt out of state.  It will show your location in real time like Google maps.  Has satellite view.  You get a one state free seven day trial version when you download to your phone.

Once you learn to use it you can mark exact spots off your GPS coordinates and print maps of specific areas with in GMUs...etc

I like the National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps. I have been using them for years in combination with my GPS.

If you are going to carry a GPS which I recommend look at a chip from Onxmaps.  I have there app but also use the chip in my GPS.

This!  I have hunted with all kinds of printed maps and this is the best option IMO.    Always have one on me out west. With ONE (and not six) being the key.  Nothing worse then hunting on the edge of a quad map and needing to find the next edge on another page.

And whenever I hear - i use this cellphone app - I cringe.  They are great for the back woodlot, horrible choice for the mountains.

Why? Low grade GPS, poor screen visibility in sunlight, it will use up your battery and bringing a backup battery pack seems silly, it isn't durable if you drop it or fall on it, and will not handle moisture...and probably more.  Please never use a cellphone app as your only source for direction in big country.

For me it is printed map, gps and a compass.  And I even have maps on my gps and still carry a printed map.

These are the best maps i have used. He also ahs a online map with the unit boundries, with all the unit stats. diyhuntingmaps.com
