Title: Good luck NY bowhunters - 2016
Post by: ronp on September 26, 2016, 08:37:00 PM
Early archery for deer in NY opens tomorrow for the northern zone and south opens Saturday.  Good luck to everyone and please hunt safe.  Wear a harness if you climb a tree for you and your family's sake.

I'll be in the mountains Wednesday.  Please post some pics of your hunting adventures and enjoy every moment in the woods!

Good luck Fellars.  I do believe this will be my last season in NY, May even be a  half season.  House has an offer, closing scheduled for mid November.

I hope to take a deer with me.    :wavey:

Good luck to all & be safe. So far nothing but rain drops falling off branches. Hoping a deer or bear decides to join me & go 4 a ride in my truck.

Best of luck to all for a safe and productive hunting season.

My wife and I are expecting a baby on October 1! I certainly won't hunt as much as I usually do, but I'm sure it will be one of my most memorable hunting seasons.

Well, at just before 11 this morning I had a nice 8 pt go by @ about 60yds. Never knew I was there watching him. Watched him walk towards my buddy who shoots a wheelie bow. 10 minutes later I get the text he shot. Tell him to hold still & I'll be up there in a while. Missed him @ 21yds. From where the deer was standing & where I found his clean arrow he had to shoot at least 10" over his back!!!

Hi Susan,  I will be headed west to be closer to Family in Central WI, Wausau to be fairly exact. But I may be within a 30 minute radius, depending on lodging and work.  There are a lot of things I will miss about NY, mostly my friends and mountains, But there are a lot of things you can keep.

Pete, Thanks for the kind words.

Slow morning but at least the rain stopped. Squirrels were active and I passed up several good shots but didn't want to jinx the deer hunting.......should have shot......   :biglaugh:  The new ladder stand seems to be working well but I do have to trim back the stuff I take.....no need to carry all that stuff just for a 4-5 hour hunt. Knife, rope snacks and some water will be the rule for now.

I hunted a piece of state land this morning that is LOADED with acorns.  I had the woods to myself as the rain seemed to keep most guys at home.  I saw 6 does and a small 6 point.  No shots presented themselves but it was the perfect morning to be out still-hunting.  I look forward to hunting this spot again soon.

Day went all wrong. Planned on hunting today but life happens. My wife & I had to take our 6yo cat to the vet. Kidney failure. We have been giving him IV fluids @ home 4 a week now with no improvement. Last ditch effort is 3 days there running fluids 24/7 & if no improvement we will have to put him down. He's our youngest cat & very young 4this. We have no children & our pets are our kids. Went to the woods this afternoon & cried in my treestand. Gave up after a short while & started walking out & got busted by a deer on the way out. Heavy heart & hoping for the best but realistic about the outcome. Good luck to all of you & may your arrow stay true.

Sorry about your kitty--pets are family, for sure. Hope he makes it.

Charlie I wish the best for you in your move.

Opening morning was devoid of deer or anything else for that matter. Woods in our area are thick, thick and I think it will be a week or two before that changes. It is still  a bit too warm. The deer are deep blue gray already, so they're not moving much at 60 degrees. Acorns are there but not as many as there should be, and apples are very spotty. Still, the fawn crop was good and there are plenty of "horns" if not big ones.  I live in hope......

Sorry to hear about your Pet Daniel and I know the feeling. We are unable to have kids either which means very spoiled pets.

Thank you Susan.

I couldn't hunt yesterday morning due to a House inspector so I went and collected the trail camera.  In the afternoon, I had a doe who came in and winded me 4 times.  its the first time hunting the spot and she came from a  direction I wasn't expecting.

Slow up in the Catskills yesterday. Misty rain all Friday and Saturday. Sat all morning Saturday, nothing. Sat Saturday night on the edge of a field and had a coyote come in within 5 yards. He came in from behind me so no shot.

Wasn't able to hunt opening day as I worked but went out yesterday later start then I wanted. Had a doe stomping as I opened my truck door at the parking space, jumped couple more walking in. Was already light so found a spot off the trail near some sign and set up ghost blind for the first time. Say for a couple hours then moved to another spot for a little middle of the day scouting. Jumped couple does that were bedded and got real close to a doe bedded before she figured me out. Good sign seeing all the deer even with the heavy pressure of openin weekend. Will be using the ghost blind 90% of the time this year not a fan of climbing trees. Will do a full review at the end of the season with hopefully some hharvest pics with in front of blind!!!! Good luck this season to everybody!!!

crotch horn, I know how you're feeling.  We just found out our 11 yr. old lab has cancer in his left eye and his lungs.  My wife asked our veterinarian who is our nephew, how long does he have?  He said to enjoy him while you have him, so that's what we're doing.

Hug them & hold them. Scratch your pets ears & give them an extra treat tonight for George. He was a wonderful boy & I love him dearly. Thanks to all for letting me share my grief we you.

Best of luck with the ghost blind mike, I hear they work great. Just make sure you have some cover behind you.

Went out Sunday evening and only saw a great horned owl fly by and some turkeys roosting. Good to be in the tree stand though.

next week I'll be in Vermont with my wife visiting friends but I'll get a 1/2 day in hunting pheasants with the shotgun so not a total loss.

Good luck everybody and be safe!

Did a 3 hour sit this afternoon, private land in Montgomery Co. Saw 16 turkeys going in and then 4 more from my ground blind, one really nice tom at 16 yards.......guess who didn't buy a tag this year,    :banghead:   Then I came out a bit early and got caught in the middle of field  by 2 does. I watched them feed for 15 minutes until the bigger one got wise that I was not a bush. Nice to be out, a bit warm and the skeeters were out, but nice. We need a frost.........

I haven't got out much due to a hand injury but I'm able to shoot a couple arrows a day.  I started hunting a new piece of state land and did manage to get a shot at a nice doe at 15 yards but shot over her back.  I also had a big doe 7 yards from me in a goldenrod field the same day but she got too close for  the little cover that I had and was never able to draw on her.  So far it's been an exciting season.  Hopefully a few more weeks of physical therapy and I'll be shooting more efficiently.  Good luck to all.

This morning was 43 degrees and still , about 10 minutes to 8 three coyotes came through and I thought the day would be lost . About 20 minutes later I'm looking right where the last Coyote disappeared and saw a white tail about 50 yards, put the glasses up and see a doe browsing so I put the glasses down and am looking at her and to see if there are any others with her when right over my right shoulder I catch movement it's looks like a huge six pointer until I see both of his G3 grew down instead of up  ! Double drop tines and and He's a mature buck that I would gladly take except he is in the worst possible  place and 15 yards from me I tried turning slowly but he got nervous and walked away as I'm watching him walk away I catch more movement in the same spot a here stands a wide 10 point he saw his patner and got suspicious and followed him away from me . Later on I saw a fat little forkhorn and smaller eight chasing a doe .  All is all a great early season morning to be in Gods creation !

No bow hunting for me this weekend took my 14 year old daughter out for the youth rifle hunt. She passed on a button buck and missed a doe due to a deflection off a branch. Doesn't take much to deflect a .243

I missed a big doe tonight.  It looked good... less than 20 yards.    I shot low and paced it off....... 26 yards!  I was WAY off on that one.     :banghead:   Probably won't get out again until friday.  Good luck everyone.

I shot this mature doe Tuesday morning.  She was one of 5 mature does I saw during the morning.  About a 20 yard shot with my homemade bow, 125 grain eclipse broadhead, 125 grain steel insert on a carbon express arrow.

Four yard shot,  down in thirty yards. Home made t/d longbow. Hope to get a photograph up soon. Having a hard time logging in on my I pad. Good luck, safety first. G

Good job on the deer guys ! My wife had 2small bucks close to her this morning but couldn't get a shot. The forkhorn caught her drawing ,trotted 40 yds and then laid down to watch her for 1/2 an hour. I stalked to 25yds from a pair of does on my way back to the house but couldn't get a good angle and they finally saw me. Beautiful morning in the woods ! I should have stayed out but I have to make some money sometime...

She came to about 10 yards and gave me a good shot. I thought I hit a bit back and backed out till about noon. She only went about 80 yards. Stalker Coyote and Snuffer head.

Congrats Glen, nice buck.

Yesterday morning, I had a  coyote come through, big ole dog but he was out of range.  I really felt good about this spot.  I put my buddy 50 yards from me in another tree I was considering and the wind worked for both of the trees.

He saw 2 bucks, one really nice 8 point he said.  I couldnt see them.

The leaves were falling constantly and it was just beautiful.

I had a  hunter come through at 7:30, tree stand to his back and he sounded like an army coming. I could hear him from a long ways off.  when he finally heard me whistling at him and finally saw me waving my hat, I could see the sweat dripping off his face.  he made a semi circle around me and out of site.

Later I learned his group was doing deer drives. Also I found what I had thought was an un-hunted and undisturbed spot (last year it was, probably why there was so much deer sign there last winter), had a brand new tree stand 25 yards from my set. I found 5 more of this guys tree stands on the way out.

I spent this afternoon scouting another piece of state forest that is loaded with acorns.  The foliage is peak and the weather is summer-like.  I ended up finding a few really good spots and saw 9 deer.  None were close enough for a shot but I did manage to get a shot at a tree rat.  Great confidence booster.   Overall it was a great day in God's creation.    (http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o629/wetfeathers1/DSC00115_zpszimecefl.jpg) (http://s1151.photobucket.com/user/wetfeathers1/media/DSC00115_zpszimecefl.jpg.html)

I shot this deer today while still-hunting with a friend on public land.  He's never hunted on the ground before today and likes to poke fun at my "kids bow".  He seemed pretty impressed after he watched me shoot this deer though.  who knows... Maybe he'll pick up a recurve  someday.  He seems very interested in trad now.  (http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o629/wetfeathers1/IMG_20161020_134943931_zpsvj7ougwf.jpg) (http://s1151.photobucket.com/user/wetfeathers1/media/IMG_20161020_134943931_zpsvj7ougwf.jpg.html)

Kopper-  I've been doing really well hunting the food sources. (acorns)  i try to stay downwind of the target spots and just keep looking.  If I'm fortunate to find one before they see me, keeping a tree between me and them is the easiest way to get in range.  The rain makes that sooo much easier.  Another plus to hunting in the rain is you'll often have the woods to yourself.  a big plus when hunting public land.
A lot of people worry about the blood trail.  I've never lost one due to the rain.  A good shot is a good shot.  a poor shot is tough even on dry ground.  I feel I can get closer in the rain resulting in higher odds of making a good shot. That's just my 2 cents.
Good luck to all who brave the elements.  Enjoy the outdoors regardless of the weather.
P.S. Admountainken-  You have a lot of us following your stories. Good luck. I hope to see your smile behind those antlers soon.

While getting dressed Saturday morning at my hunting spot a here a deer coming and switch on my headlamp. See the bright eyes and a doe comes within 20 yards and veers to my right. Finish getting dressed and ready to head to my stand and I hear another deer. Hear some grunting and here comes a nice 8pt walking in to me. He got as close as ten feet thinking I was the doe and then went to my right also. Good thing it wasn't legal shooting light. lol

I shot over a decent sized 8pt yesterday morning. It should have been a cake shot ; 20yds broadside.I gotta remember to aim low when in a high stand !Later in the day I watched a redtail hawk miss a strike at a squirrel not 30yards from my tree .It made me feel a little better knowing I'm not the only hunter who misses.

Got out Sunday afternoon and saw a doe with a fawn, snuck out for a couple hours tonight and a six pointer came in and worked the community scrape over good peeing on his hocks walking away then coming back and doing it all over again. 41 degrees and a stiff wind made it feel fall like ! It's only getting better ..

I had a spike come in yesterday and freshened my mock scrape.  I had a fawn come in the day before that was really thin (could count ribs thin).  It didn't seem to be sick.  The farmer that owns the land I hunt said that there were 3 does hit by cars in August on the road that goes by the farm.  He thinks it was possibly one of their fawns I saw.  It can forage, but it didn't get enough mothers milk to fatten up.

Got out to a new spot last night snuck in got in and settled. around 430 saw some legs for a second then they were gone. 45 minutes later here come a doe up the hill. Never came close but she went right to the area I saw movement before and disappeared. I figure there must be a black hole in that spot were the deer are disappearing. Crazy! I had a falcon or a small hawk buzz me at about 2 feet. I had a small sapling in front at about 4.5 feet and the hawk flew in between me and that tree. I just heard a swoosh and looked up in time to see a streak go by! Really cool when they are that close!

I finally got out this morning but it was already light out as I entered the woods.  I was walking on a logging road to my " honey hole" but before I could get there I ended up walking up on a doe.  She was about 30 yards away and looking away from me when a spike walked onto the roadway. he saw me but wasn't too concerned and grunted and harrassed the doe off the roadway.  Then I couldn't have taken more than 10 steps and I see a sapling shaking so I knew there was another buck there.  I stopped and nocked an arrow as it was only 20 yards from me now.  When he finally entered the roadway I could see he was a nice young 8 point.  He saw me and became a little nervous and turned back the direction he came. when he began to leave the roadway he stopped with his head in the brush and his whole body was exposed broadside.  Any other year my buck tag would have been filled but I'm chasing a true giant this year and decided it was still too early in the season to shoot this guy. I have to admit that I was very tempted though.  I decided to turn around and still-hunt my way back so I didn't disturb them any further. They seem to be moving more now.

Was hunting with my 12 year old son this morning, had a spike come in and was just out of range for him to shoot( he's limited to 10-11 yards max with his 37 lb. longbow I made him) the buck walked right past me at 8 yards made a good shot and he didn't go very far. It was a real joy to have the next generation there hunting with me.

Awesome deer!  I had a spike go by last night could have shot but it didn't feel right so he got a walk I have seen bigger deer.  So far this morning I had a deer blow up the morning. THEN I hear a snap and nothing for10 minutes then I hear crunch. Turn around and a nice body 4 point. He knew something was up and I think he might of got a little wind. HE took a hop then walked back the way he came.

Well, I wish that there was more of a story to tell but here it is.  This year started out poorly due to an injured hand and my shooting was horrible.  I decided to shoot my Bighorn 55#  rather than my 65# Predator.  I was able to shoot a doe  and build my confidence and had been getting several big bucks on camera.  I decided to hunt one with droptines and he had been showing up pretty often but never in daylight  (http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o629/wetfeathers1/WGI_0013_zpsdtvhhyar.jpg) (http://s1151.photobucket.com/user/wetfeathers1/media/WGI_0013_zpsdtvhhyar.jpg.html)
Title: Re: Good luck NY bowhunters - 2016

Yesterday the wind was perfect for this spot and I had been hunting from a climber ( very rare for me) and just knew that I'd have action.  Then I heard the unmistakeable rhythm of a deer's gait and stood up and readied my bow.  Now I couldn't see the deer approaching and really was having difficulty deciphering which direction I was hearing the steps come from.  Then he  materialized 20 yards to my left and I couldn't believe what I was looking at.  I only had a few seconds to shoot before he reached cover and I didn't even think to stop him.  I just reacted and sent my cedar shaft tipped with a 125 gn Zwicky into motion. I hit him perfectly and saw him drag the arrow as he circled my stand within 10 yards.  I attempted to nock another arrow but it wasn't needed. I saw him tip over less than 100 yards from where he'd been shot.
So,  I wish I could tell you that I had been hunting this buck and had finally outsmarted him but actually I was hunting another buck.  It all happened so fast I didn't get the shakes until after I had shot.  That's probably why I had made a good shot!

Great buck Michael!

I was out on Saturday the whole day and saw eight different bucks. All were small bucks that I let walk except a nice 8 pt that I shot just under at 30 yards. He was moving fast going to his bed and was using another trail I wasn't hunting because of the wind. I only had a small window to shoot through. He jumped, and looked around and then slowly walked away so hopefully I'll get another shot at him. I have another stand that would have given me a 10 yard shot at him on that trail but the wind was no good for that stand.

Yesterday, I took the day off but with no wind and my scent drifting all over I only saw a couple of does and a spike on that same trail the big eight was on.

Today I hunted a new property for the third time. Earlier this week I hunted it and found a scrape line so I decided to take my climber and set up by the freshest looking scrape. After wandering around in the dark for 15 minutes looking for a suitable tree I was completely frustrated so I left the climber there and went and sat in a ladder stand I set up a month ago for my daughter. I had a standing joke with her that I was going to shoot a buck out of her stand while she was on a 4 day field trip to D.C.. Well guess what she is in D.C. until tomorrow night ,boy is she going to be mad. When it started to get light I looked to the west where there is an alfalfa field and I could see 6 or 7 does running around the field and checking there back trail. After they ran to the next wood lot I could see a buck standing in the field so I grunted at him. He turned on a dime and came straight to me from 75 yards. After shooting him I called Stoneknife(Jim) from my stand , while talking to him I looked over my right shoulder and there was a 6pt standing 20 yards from me. I could see the buck that I shot he went down within 50 yards, upon gutting him I found I hit him in the heart.

Got out this afternoon. Went to some state land I mostly gun hunt only to find out they are deforresting the land. They have logged a large portion of the land I hunt. Saw no deer & little sign. Will be looking for a different area for next year.

crotch horn this could be a good thing depending on how much they're taking out. It should create more undergrowth which is lacking in some of my woods because of all the tree cover.
Title: Re: Good luck NY bowhunters - 2016
Post by: adkmountainken on November 09, 2016, 04:47:00 PM
2nocks that all depends on the loggers, 2 of my favorite spots around here got logged and they left a MESS, tops and limbs everywhere and tore the crap out of the old logging road. still can not hunt the 1 place and its been 10 years.

Ron W you need to find a different place to hunt, year after year to rarely see any deer let alone get a shot. You might have to expand your boundaries some , or you might just like being outdoors with your bow. Which many times that what I do.
Title: Re: Good luck NY bowhunters - 2016
Post by: crotch horn on November 10, 2016, 07:00:00 PM
The state land I am talking about according to the DEC is up for deforresting which means every possible tree will be cut for acres & acres. So far they have taken the money trees. Saying it's necessary because of a beetle problem. Horse trails go through the property as well & there is opposition so we will see. Will hunt it at least one more time before rifle. Could be great in a few yrs or terrible like Ken said depending. Good luck to all.

Longrifle.......I'm going 45 miles one way to hunt in a fantastic spot in the bow only zone near Albany. Private land and deer are being seen...just not by me. I just never seem to hit it right. The place close to home is also private land I have seen deer there before and even missed one. It's just not coming together this year. I'm getting my knee replaced Dec 5th so I still have some time to make something happen.

I was out this morning for a few hours. Had three turkeys fly down close. A minute later a coyote comes in after one of the birds. She flew up in a tree and the coyote left. Had a spike come in to ten yards for a while. Nice morning.

It has been really S-L-O-W over here in Zone 4, mostly windy and too warm, and a SUPER MOON tonight. Fair amount of rut sign pops up when it does chill down but no action during legal hours. Does showing white tarsal areas, no dark ones spotted yet. I could have flown to Seattle and back this weekend in the time I sat my stand(s). Nothing.

They are hunters Chuck, first rule for them was Me not hunting there.  However, I can hike the trails and observe.  Its an incredible property. I have been seeing deer daily. Last night I hear d a buck chasing a doe off the driveway.  This morning I was nearly run over by a  doe while walking the dogs.

Theres a nuisance bear there too.  They have not given me permission to deal with him yet.

Rainy today but the rest of the week is looking pretty nice before the guns start up.

Short sit this afternoon, I got cold so I took a walk. Checked a spot out for Saturday morning and jumped a deer in the process. Still have not seen a deer while actually hunting......I got back to the truck and saw the biggest doe I have seen in a long time standing in the drive way of the land owner. LOL.....she had a face like a mule and a sway back heavy body......neat to see her.

Went out today hoping to get a doe. I sat in the same stand that I took a buck out of earlier this month. The stand is about fifty yards away from an alfalfa field and about 7:30 I could see a 6pt escorting a 4pt out of his turf. Then about 20 minutes later I had another 6pt wonder through. At 8:30 I decided to check another wood lot about 200 yards away and that's when I kicked out 2 more bucks that were at least 2 1/2 years old. I backed out after that but will be back Saturday when my next buck tag becomes valid.

Well Saturday I couldn't hunt do to prior plans but was able to hunt all day Sunday. The wind was going to be coming from the west all day and I thought it would be perfect to hunt an old stand site. I use to hunt this area on public ground but a couple of other hunters moved in on me so I went else where. I haven't seen there trucks parked there so far this season so I figured I would give it a try. Got to the spot at 5:00am and no one was there. Went in a found my tree and set up my wedgelock. West of me is a house with a deer fence around it, to the south of me is a bowl that forces the deer to walk on either side of it giving me a 15 yard shot on once side of the bowl. On the far side of the bowl is a big patch of laurels. To the north is a funnel between the two houses. East of me is open woods and then a big patch of laurels. While sitting in my stand I'm facing west and the bowl trail is to my left, in front of me it two runs going from north to south and to my right is two trails, one nw/se and another e/w.

Sunrise comes and the woods are beautiful. Suddenly I see a nice eight point with his nose to the ground moving fast on the trail 20 yards in front of me. I get ready to draw when he comes to a shooting lane but let down, didn't feel comfortable taking the shot. I like to hold for a second or two and then release and he was moving too fast for me. About an hour later I hear some chasing behind me and see a spike running around.

I'm hunting long island where we can shoot basically unlimited does so I'm passing on all small bucks.

About 15 minutes later I see some deer coming from the NW. A see a yearling in the lead and then a doe and another yearling. They will pass on my right on a trail that will veer less than three yards from my stand. Not the best but I can take the shot as they pass my stand and veer away for a quartering away shot at ten yards. Well the yearling goes by but the doe puts on the breaks almost under my stand. She is looking around and then looks up but I've got branches around me and I freeze. She stares for awhile and then backs off ten yards and stomps her foot. she calms down after five minutes but her vitals are behind a tree. The spike sees her a starts walking over. She starts to walk away and at twenty yards I get a quartering away shot. The shot is off and hits her perfectly, they all bust out of there and they are gone. I finish hunting the morning and then get down to find my arrow that disappeared at the shot.

I find blood right away.

     (http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo137/jm9862/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-11/593CF562-C3B5-4007-9476-5AE26A725B34.jpg) (http://s369.photobucket.com/user/jm9862/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-11/593CF562-C3B5-4007-9476-5AE26A725B34.jpg.html)

Then I found the arrow stuck in the ground about 20 yards from the shot.
    (http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/oo137/jm9862/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-11/E596C100-D976-46FA-AEFB-3E775F984648.jpg) (http://s369.photobucket.com/user/jm9862/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-11/E596C100-D976-46FA-AEFB-3E775F984648.jpg.html)

The arrow is covered with blood and I continue blood trailing another 30 yards and see this.

Well, that wraps up the southern zone bow season for now.

Hunted a few days, had a good shot on an 8pt which I still can't believe I missed at ~15yds due to deflection off a small branch. I guess back to it in December, or maybe just bowhunt straight through the regular season.

I got out this morning for a few hours. Saw a raccoon, 9 turkeys and a spike at 50 yards. Had a close encounter with a doe I walked up to on the walk back home. She fed up to twenty yards before she noticed the big blob kneeling with a bow in hand. That was that. No close shots or human encounters. Nice morning

Got out Saturday and had a doe with two yearlings come by my stand but it was too dark to shoot. Five minutes later and it would have been perfect. Sat for the evening where I shot my doe but nothing was seen. Figure they must be in lockdown. On Thursday I got a nice picture at 10:03am of a real nice 8 pt following a doe 10 yards from my stand.

Ron, I think you need another hunter to check out where you are setting up. If you are in a good area you should be seeing deer. Are you hunting edge habitat? Are you alerting deer as you walk in? I know I was hunting a spot on LI that looked like it was perfect, lots of runs, a lot of rubs etc but I never saw anything. I was blinded by the sign and when my friend took a look at it he thought they were coming thru the area at night and it was too open. Moved my stand to an edge where the open woods and thick laurels met and I saw deer everyday. I had forgotten the cardinal rule, deer follow edge habitat.

Got it Ron and answered. If you are ever on Long Island contact me and I'll put you in a stand where you should see deer. Nothing is a guarantee though. My last five sits, some evening and some morning I've seen 14 different deer. Just very puzzling that you aren't seeing them in the rut. If you go to the Muzzy shoot let's meet up since I go every year.

Saw some yearling does and a six point with his nose to the ground that was limping along on Saturday evening. The acorn crop was huge on Long Island this year so I'm not sure how the late season will be. Going to move closer to some bedding areas and leave the funnels.

Went out Saturday evening and the wind was stronger than I like. Just as it was getting dark I heard a slight scraping sound and turned my head and a foot away from me a great horned owl had just landed on a branch of the tree I was in. We made eye contact and then he was off. It was great.

After I lowered my bow and was getting ready to come down a six pointer walked under my tree and got my scent.

Sounds like your on em pretty good Jeff! Been hunting on my 2 days off some Suffolk archery some Dec, had a close encounter last week on the ground blew it. Sunday hunt got ruined by small game and dirt bikes. Out today missed some squirrels and hoping for a deer to walk by the trail on the edge of this field I'm sitting off of.

At least I have this beautiful new to me northern mist classic to keep me company

Good luck with the Northern Mist Michael.

Been a tough season for me, shot high on a nice buck, and shot under on another buck at 25 yards. I'm hunting a thick area and trying to time the shots as they go from cover to cover hasn't worked for me.
Plan to just hold at full draw and have them walk into an opening and then release.

First time I've hunted such a thick spot with laurels.

Had a doe run up a small trail right before the end of shooting light, she was pushed by a couple of hikers. Bleeted got her to stop, was waiting for her to step into shooting lane and stupidly thought grunting with my tube would stop her from bolting as she looked as if her curiosity was wearing off. She busted and i just laughed. Closet I got to realsing an arrow this year. Always learn a lesson when I encounter deer.

Been trying to hunt edges and transitions like you we mentioning. That spot was a high point where oaks meets somewhat open pine sandy area. Still very tough though

Tuesday was forecast to be the best day of the week so I decided to go sit in one of my stands on a piece of property that I've been hunting for close to twenty years. It was going to be a bitter sweat day as it might be the last time on the property because the land owner passed away in the spring of 2015 and his wife is having a hard time continuing to live there.
I wasn't in my stand for very long when I saw a couple of deer running south along the bottom of the ridge. For no reason that I could see they reversed direction and ran by me at forty yards I was somewhat relieved that they were that far away as I wasn't really looking to shoot a deer I just wanted to relax. As luck would have it the big doe decided to walk to my stand and stand broad side to me , I'm up about fifteen in a pine tree and completely concealed. After a short time of hemming and hawing about whether or not to take the shot  I realized that shot opportunities like this don't happen all the time. After taking the shot and recovering her I discovered that she was the darkest colored deer that I've ever seen, she also had a small patch of white on the side of her nose. She was so neat looking that I decided to have her mounted the taxidermist said he thought that she might have a slight case of melanism with a little bit of pie bald on her nose. So my quiet day in the woods is now costing me a taxidermy bill. I'll ad a picture later.

Got out of work early today and had about 2 hours to hunt so I went to a spot I hunt frequently. Was very windy and would have the perfect wind for trying to do some stalking in a big field with tall tall grass.

Made it about 30 yards into the field when a doe comes running at me. I get ready standing there with 2-3' grass around me. Was lining up the shot as she walked towards me when I see another doe running even closer. I stop wait and this second deer was broadside about to give me a great shot if she stepped a couple feet forward. Sun was in my eyes and would have had to shoot between two little saplings. In the end I waited to long the first doe felt uneasy looking at this thing standing there and they turned and ran. It was at that moment I saw why they came towards me in the first place a nice 2-3 year old 6 point popped through the grass and ran after the does.

Ended up walking the span of the property jumping some more deer bedded in some thick vegetation never getting a shot. Walking back the wind switches allowing me to stalk through the field again learning the various paths measndering through the grass. As I am walking towards the wood line I decide to stand and enjoy the sunset. All of a sudden I see a tiny tiny yearling walked by right towards me. I quickly crouch and get ready. He/she came about 5-7 yards away quartering towards me when I stand to shoot as he turns away some. Again I hesitate for whatever reason and of course the little yearling decides it was standing there long enough. I try to stop it with a bleet but no luck.

Both shots were less than 10 yards. Was the most exciting yet disappointing hunts I've had. Was hunting with my new to me northern mist classic and safari tuff quiver. Next time I won't hesitate.
Took this picture and a minute later the yearling came walking from the left of the field.

Thanks to all my NY brethren for sharing your season with us all with stories and pics. Shot this doe at about 13 yards quartering away this afternoon. Backed out for an hour and had an easy blood trail. She went about 100 yards hitting both lungs and nicking the heart.

Shooting a ******** titan 62" 50#@28" draw, Easton fmj 400 spine cut to 30" and Simmons safari head 205 grain head
