2 nights in a row I have taken my son with me in a backpack and have watched a big 8 point come out in to a field by my house in the same place! tonight he had a 6 point with him that looked tiny in comparison. as we watched 4 does joined them coming in to the field right below a medium size pine tree. you can bet there will be a stand in that tree by Saturday afternoon! when we got back my wife asked us what we saw and my boy said DEER, DEER go ! well Saturday i'll be hunting solo with the monkey on my back and have high hope that high rack will be right on cue!
-
Good luck,hope it pans out.
-
Good luck!

-
Best of luck!!
-
Best of luck and post your success pictures.
-
Charlie,
that monkey is a deer MAGNET and is pfetty quiet for the most part. if he see's the deer from aways away he stays quiet but if they startle him he gets excited and hollors to me like i dont see them. hate to leave him home but i feel i have an excellent chance of getting a shot.
-
Good luck Ken!

-
Good luck. Keep us informed, please. I'm after a pretty 8 and have been close, but haven'tt loosed an arrow, yet.
-
All the best of good fortune!
-
I just have such a good feeling about this weekend and it would mean so much to me to kill a deer that my son helped me scout! I'm not going to look for him again until I hunt Saturday afternoon. it just feels right...
-
I recently listened to a podcast where a guy was talking about hunting in the Adirondacks. Sounds to me like it's probably one of the most difficult places in the U.S. to hunt.
-
it is VERY difficult my friend BUT this time I am hunting the Southern zone by my house and not on my favorite mountain. 5 min walk to my stand here and a 55 min walk straight up when I hunt the mountain.
-
I dont know adk, you aren't taking your good luck charm along! Without him, Mr buck may not show! :biglaugh:
-
I would LOVE to bring him and I extremely love hunting with him BUT I will be in a tree stand this time and only room for one. he just turned 2 Sept 24 and I can't wait to make memories with him on future hunts.
-
Good luck!
-
setting up a tree stand tomorrow morning in a pine tree by a small opening between fields that I have watched him walk through twice as well as a host of does. hope to be in stand by 3 in the afternoon untill dark.
-
Keep us updated Ken,
I'm looking forward to the pics of your trophy.
Good Luck
-
Good luck Ken!! I remember the backpack days with my son, now he's hitting the woods with me. Nothing better!!
-
Sending all good wishes & the best of intentions. Shoot straight 1st with the bow then with the camera. Good luck brother.
-
stand is in PERFECT position, wind is PERFECT but right now the farmer is in the lower field harvesting clover! lets hope he does not work his way up, also looks like rain....
-
IF rains holds out and farmer leaves I would dam near bet the farm on getting a shot tonight!
-
Uh-oh......
-
best laid plans... even if he harvests the field i'm sure i'll get a shot at a deer just not tonight.
-
In MO the deer seem to know the diff in farm equip and recreational stuff. They will come check out a field after the combine or tractor has been in it or even while the farmer is there. Unless the machine is right with you, I wouldn't worry about it.
Good luck man!
-
Farmer is gone, good wind, rain passed and I'm in my stand! Holy pine sap...
-
good luck brother.
-
Good luck man!
Now put that cellular device away and pay attention!! :D
A guy hunting near here was listening to John Denver on his earbuds when he didn't get a shot at the doe watching him..... was not me either!! LOL
True story, you can't make this stuff up.
-
I'm eating pizza with my two youngest daughters, so I'm hunting vicariously through you this evening. Can't wait for the update!!!
-
Listen to the wind, Brother.....
-
pretty hard night with the rain but I stuck it out. had 7 does with in 30 yards and no closer! big boy did not show but could have been a little nervous as the local duck hunters were guns blazing! great night regardless and had deer in front of me from start to finish. back at em tomorrow.
-
Keep at it Kenny, It will come together. the deer will probably use the field more now that its cut after this little bit of rain. the green gets sweeter with new growth.

Things just don't always work out quite as neatly as we envisioned.
Here's hoping you get a close encounter with that buck!
-
my problem is actual time to hunt, I can only hunt weekends in that's its 1 morning and 1 afternoon hunt only as there is so much to do both for me and my wife. she has a lot of family health problems she is dealing with as well as training for her 5 marathon in November. we split time watching the kids while the other does their own thing. hope to hunt there again next Sunday afternoon.
-
did not have time to hunt tonight but did hit the field with my son in the backpack to see what was going on. got some great pic's of some does 30 yards behind my stand and was a real blast to have him see them. swung back around to get the wind in our favor to watch the clover field better. just before dark I saw the 6 point step in to the field, closer this time and got a good look. when I saw him before by the big 8 he looked like he had a basket rack, this time I could see it was a really decent rack and got the chance to zoom in a little better with my camera. to add insult to injury just before dark but still in good shooting light I watched him stroll right underneath my stand ( 5 yards tops! ) while feeding and stopping. all I could do was smile... and cry...

Love those big mature North Country Does...
-
Nice pics Ken. You are doing the right thing by your family. Those deer will be there next weekend. I hope you have good wind and weather.
-
oh, man! I've had similar experiences as my wife and I are raising a young family. You clearly have your priorities in line. Great job getting those pics. I really hope you get a crack at em.
-
could not hunt tonight but had just enough time to put a trail camera out by my tree stand.
-
Look at it this way....having limited time to hunt is working in your favor, you aren't burning out the spot. I am hoping you get him Ken, you deserve it. I won't say "good luck"....because you have this pretty well thought out. :bigsmyl:
-
going to give it my best shot this morning, will be in the stand by 6 am!
-
Let me know if you need help dragging, although I know you are capable of slinging it over your shoulders like Mitten.
-
Darn really expected to see a dead deer wen reading down this post,,that's why we call it hunting...haaaaaaa
-
what a morning, just unbelievable! saw 13 deer, 3 BIG racked bucks and the big 6, came out behind me and walked across field. I have NEVER saw that many BIG bucks in a YEAR much less together! just getting so close, putting up another stand today.
-
Good Luck, Brother!!!!!
Listen to the wind.....
-
Great pics! Good luck!!
-
Good luck. I've had bucks break my heart all season before so I know what you're going through. They would tempt me by chasing does within 50' of the house but when I was in the stand they wouldn't come within 50 yards.
-
Im going to inject some probably much unwanted advise. I know its tough to do, but if you can, get away from that field. They will run you crazy, trying to figure where to catch up to them on it. Center your hunt instead around the bed. Get as close as you dare so as not to spook them, and in the direction they travel from the bed. Just my 2 cents, take it or leave it bro.
-
I did the unthinkable and paid the price today. due to a prior promise I took 2 good friends North on the mountain for muzzleloader hunting. when I got home I checked the trail camera by my tree stand near my house where I have been hunting and seeing all the bucks. from 8am until after nine THIS MORNING I had 120 pics of 2 brutes..... more to follow. my vow from here on out is to hunt every weekend by my house until I put an arrow through 1 of the 4 bucks I have watched.
-
meet "splitter" 10 point with split brow tines, this is actually the first time I have saw him I believe unless he was 1 of the 4 I watched at 100 yards Saturday morning.

-
still sorting pictures. I was about %99 the 4 I saw Sat were 3 eight points and a six point but now i'm as confused as an Amish electrician... i know that this group will separate really soon and there is no doubt i'm in for a hellava time!
-
that would have been a 5 yard quartering away shot from my stand on either one of these bucks...
-
You have to be "in" the stand.......If those guys can't black powder hunt by them selves by now they should take up golf. :biglaugh:
-
Good luck Ken.
-
this will be the first weekend I plan to hunt morning and afternoon both days and look very forward to it!
-
Good luck. Play the wind
-
Go get them Ken!
-
Good luck! I hope you get a crack at one of them!
Bisch
-
Ya if the wind ain't perfect you'll just educate --
Good luck
Tim

Idk what your schedule is like. It if you are somewhat flexible. When you see a string of days 4-5 or more of the normal average temps then boom the bottom falls out. A temp drop of 10 deg or more. Be on stand.
Never mind, read through post. Lol hunt when ya can. Keep this in mind for vac day.
-
Good luck and go get em  :
-
on the edge of my seat !!
-
cold front moving in with rain for the weekend but you can bet them farm I'll be in the stand!
-
Get'em
-
just itching to get in the stand this weekend, got a good feeling....
-
wouldn't ya know have to take my dog to the vets's in the morning ARRRGGGGHHHH...... will be out in the afternoon and all day Sunday.
-
good luck Ken
-
Ken, I think you are better off this way. You can slip in undetected and well rested. Its easy to lose focus while sitting in the stand in poor weather resulting in not paying as well of attention as one should. For me anyway, usually ends up in a flubbed opportunity. It wears a guy out...
I think the afternoon will be a good chance but I think Sunday morning is your best chance.
Good Luck. I will be watching for your report as I am not well enough to go to the woods this weekend.
-
harsh night to hunt, high winds and rain but I stuck it out, had does come in behind me no shot. hopefully the morning will bring better weather but looks like high winds again, i'll be watching the world wake up from my tree stand bright and early!
-
Good luck and even better hunting.
-
Looking out the window, i see the birds cannot navigate this wind.
I hope you are strapped tight to the Mast Kenny, Good luck and be safe.
Hopefully one of these gusts does not send your arrow sideways.
-
EXTREMLY high winds, very hard to stand and draw it was so high. good news I saw 2 of the bucks, bad news they were right by the other tree stand I just put up and I was not in it!!!
-
will be back at it tonight unless the winds continue at this rate.
-
They live in that outdoors 24/7/365 so it might bother us more then them.... but I Hate wind too...scares the fire outa deer and makes them MORE hinky then normal, which isn't in our favor!
Good luck!
-
watched a BIG 8 and the 10 I have pic's of for 40 minutes SLOWLY feeding towards me and a good friend, it was AGONIZING watching them feed to us and day light slipping away. they got to with in 60 yards and it got dark quick. heart was skipping a beat, its what its all about but dammmmmmm I can't catch a brake. RIDICULOUS high wind again.
-
You're closing in brother. Stay with them cautiously.
-
Maybe next weekend Ken.
-
Cool thread - just shows what ALL of us deal with. You can't explain how hard it is to take a deer to people that thinks it looks so easy. Keep after them!
-
I am enjoying the show for sure and this is the first time I have been able to study a big buck ( couple of them! ) and watch there behavior to a Varity of things including high wind, it was really neat, filing it all in the memory banks! I know the time is coming soon to slip an arrow through ribs.
-
AS they say, "Can't shoot a big one if you poke a smaller one".
Hang in there, already you have more encounters and memories then I've had in 5 yrs! Kudos!
-
Ya gonna get'em this weekend?
Tim
-
tomorrow afternoon and Sunday morning i'll put the fear of a mountain man in them! will check trail cam mid morning have not checked in a week.
-
I think everyone is rootin for ya with yer limited huntin time
Good luck bro
Tim
-
Good luck!
-
good luck brother
-
Pulling for ya Man!
-
I really appreciate all the encouragement thank you! I truly believe the only thing keeping me from killing a buck is just finding the time to hunt! will be taking my baby girl over in a bit to check trail camera, she is cutting teeth and a BIT grumpy...
-
Takes after her old man....... :biglaugh:

Ron, standing over still to sit in a stand I have 2 out both solid and not very high.
-
frustrating night. busted by lead doe in a 7 doe group as I shifted feet to get in better shot stance. they came in behind me and I had to wait for them to come around the tree I was in, tried to shift feet before lead doe came around tree but to late. this is the third night the deer have came in from the same location and its as a easy fix, move tree stand around to other side of field in back of me which I will do tomorrow morning after I hunt. about a half hour before dark I can hear 2 bucks fighting, antler on antler travels pretty good! a few minutes latter here comes 3 bucks side by side by side, all racked bucks, two 8's and a HUGE bodied 6. scary thing is I can still hear 2 bucks fighting in lower corner of the field behind me. these bucks are coming same way the does were but about 40 yards father out in the field and just feeding showing NO signs of interest in the does. watched as they fed of behind me and were defiantly headed to other back field so I figured I would try my grunt call. well that stopped them dead in them tracks and....they snapped their heads in my direction and hauled azzz back where they came from AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! I know now it s bad tree stand placement and can be dealt with easily but it just kills as I have limited time to move it AND hunt out of it. I know without a shadow of a doubt I would have had a shot the last few nights but I have also been seeing deer in front of me in the clover so I was hesitant to move stand but this was the straw that broke the camels back for sure. I will tell you if this was anyone else telling ME these stories about deer like this in a 30 acre parcel I would without a doubt think you were spinning a tall tale BUT it is ME seeing it....withal this going on I still had 2 does in front of me 75 yards out in the clover field like they SHOULD BE. I knew after I put this stand up the placement was not ideal as far as background cover but thought if I stayed still and the bucks would soon let their guard down a bit chasing does I would be able to nail one. after hearing the 2 bucks fighting I am encouraged about the rut getting ready to heat up but watching the 3 big boys side by side with no interest leads me to believe we are another week away from it. thank all of you for the encouraging woods and don't loose faith in me as I have not, i'm still in this fight as they say. I enjoy it and am only frustrated as far as time to hunt, I go on vacation week after next though.
-
Keep at 'em, Ken. Experiences like you are having test your persistence and patience. Makes success, when it comes, all the sweeter.
-
I now have %100 confidence in a small ground blind I put in this morning just inside woods where the deer enter bottom field before coming up to top clover field. bad news is I can not hunt for 8 days.... heading to NYC this weekend as my wife is running her 5th marathon, when we come back Monday I am on vacation!
-
As a competitor as well as babysitter/ pocketbook holder at quite a few marathons I wish both you and your wife success in your conquests . Best wishes to both of you
-
Stay after them
Tim
-
Your time is coming.
Good luck!!

Your time is coming.

Get well soon.....the rut is kickin...now is the time
Tim

Flu might be a blessing to keep you from burning out that spot....
Like Tim B said, best time is coming.
Get well and keep rest of family well to not reinfect...then "git er done!" :)

Good Luck!!!

I don't know you all that well, Ken, but what I DO know, what you just wrote doesn't surprise me in the least!
Good luck with the household health issues...
-
Ken, I know your time is limited but each time I log on I pray I see hero picks of you & a nice deer!!! It's coming for you. Stay after them.
-
well plan on sitting on a bucket in the morning in a good ambush spot, if I sneeze or cough that bucket is worth is wait in gold....still feel like dog guts but i'll give it a shot!
-
strike 3 wife is sick as a dog this morning with same thing i'll be on daddy duties until she is better.
-
It ain't over till every body in the house has gotten it.. :(
Good luck with health! Remember, hunting is a recreational pursuit, not the search for the holy grail! Home is where the happiness truly lies!
Hope the baby stays well and wifey gets on her feet quickly... and YOU start to turn the corner... Don't rush it... Pneumonia is no joke that chases such ailments when one pushes too quickly!
