Hi, does anyone have any experience shooting both a Silvertip longbow and a recurve and can tell me what they think ? Speed difference between the two, stability, hand shock etc. I am torn between which one to get, Over the last couple years I have really gotten into shooting the Hybred longbows. I shoot about 46-48# @ 30 inches.
Thanks in advance, Gary

Gary,
It will depend on your preference. I have owned both and both are great bows. However, I prefer the recurve, just fits me better. As for speed, stability or hand shock. Speed is subjective and to be honest I could not tell a difference between the two. Stability, the recurve seems a bit more stable due to more mass weight in the riser. Hand shock, did not feel any in the Schafer 3 piece longbows I owned.

Thanks for the reply, never had this many second guesses. Might have to order both !!!

If you're looking at both in a Silvertip 3-piece TD, I think the recurve is faster. I've owned both. Couldn't detect any difference in stability, hand shock, etc. Both are very stable and hand shock is negligible.

I like the recurve not been impressed by the longbow
-
Just buy both Gary. Then send me the curve:^)

Sounds like a win win situation, to me.

You'll like the recurve better, their longbows are great but not as beloved

I guess it's a recurve then, and Keith you have enough already

Yes he does!! Keith has some of the best looking bows i've ever seen!

Recurve must faster. His longbow just doesn't have that zip.

Guess I am in the minority. I prefer the Schafer one piece or two piece longbow.
Over the years I have had over a dozen Schafer recurves (both Paul & Dave's) and four of Dave's longbows, all of them were good bows. That said, currently I only have my two piece Longbow, the others were sold when I decided to only shoot bows that I build.
In my opinion, the three piece recurve is prettier than the three piece longbow.

I wish Dave would make a 1pc 60in longbow. Anybody have one? I think he might have made a few years ago.

The 3pc recurve is outstanding and iconic, no doubt about that.
His 1pc LB is a great bow too and often overlooked.
Those are my 2 favorite Schafer's

I currently shoot a 60" one piece longbow. Copperheads, carvings...50@27"..a wicked little bow..love it.

I have both 60 inch recurves and a 62 inch longbow. The recurves are definitely faster, but I really like the longbow. It is smooth, very forgiving and handles heavy arrows well. It is quick enough to take anything I hunt. I have killed dozens of deer with the 3 piece recurves, but I find myself carrying the longbow most of the time now. My last 2 or 3 deer and a black bear have fallen to it.

I really like the recurves. Owned a three piece longbow for a short time. I have never tried a one piece, but hopefully I will someday.

I've owned a 60" 3 piece recurve and a 62" 3 piece longbow. I've since sold the recurve and will NEVER sell the longbow. For me it has everything I'm looking for in a bow. It has 2 layers of carbon in the limbs and I can honestly not tell any difference in speed between the recurve and longbow, but never chrono-ed them. It also has Dave's brass antler burl limb bolts, which add a good bit of mass to the riser, if that's what you prefer. I personally am fond of the slimmer riser and less clunky/bulky shape. I love Schafers, but always felt the recurve riser is a bit chunky. I shot both bows well, but just bonded with the longbow. I've always wondered why there's not more praise for them.
Best of luck with your decision. Not a bad place to be.

Does anyone have any experience with Daves double carbon limbs ? Will I see enough gain to make the cost worth it ?
-
I have a recurve with double carbon limbs, I ain't chronoed it against bamboo limbs but I prefer the feeling of bamboo
