Title: Help Me with my draw / anchor
Post by: 8up on March 12, 2007, 08:30:00 AM
Ok I am built funny as far as I can figure. If I stand with my arms held out and turn my head towards the target and then bend my drawing arm at the elbow my finger tips touch around my ear lobe. Yet I draw only to the corner of my mouth. I can't find a good anchor past there. Maybe thats becuase its easier to use the corner of my mouth and I just need to practice a different anchor until it feels right?

I also have a problem feeling any back tension once I draw the bow. I can feel it fine if I just pretend I am drawing the bow.

I also miss my mark to the right 10 times more often to the right. This may have to do with the fact that I can't turn my head completely over my shoulder due to my neck having a couple fused vertebra. When I am shooting well I sometimes feel the the string brush the tip of my nose on release.

Thanks, Ron

My anchor is so I feel the string at the bones just to the right of my chin and in front of the right side of my mouth, I think, and the string touches my nosetip. I think I do also not have my head turned completely around.

Know what you mean.I just tried and I have to straighten my fingers to touch my ear at all.I shoot a longish draw ankoring @ corner of my mouth and ocassionally hit my nose with the string on release.Buddies say it's cause my nose is so big,but I don't know. What I do know is I miss when that happens and when I check by closing my lefteye the target disappears behind my nose! I have to remind myself to cant bow and head more.My back tension comes from pushing to the target with the bow arm.
As someone else has said I am totally unqualified to give advice but I can demonstrate most things not to do at most any time!
Good luck ,Robert King (also in Middle Tennessee)

If you put your arms out and bend at the elbow and only touch your ear, that is normal unless you have monkey arms. To get back tension, push to the target and draw back on the string. Keep your hand open on the grip. You shouldn't have to turn your head all the way over your shoulder. If the string is hitting your nose, you are getting your face in over the arrow too much. Try looking out beyond the arrow at your "spot" instead of looking down the shaft.

Byron Tabor (In Block commercials) taught me this a few years ago and i havent looked back.

Bend your pinky in toward your palm and put your thumb on top of your pinky nail. You will notice this will conform to your jaw line if you hold it to the side of your face at anchor. Put whickever finger you use in the corner of your mouth. This will give you a 2 point anchor with your entire hand on the side of your face. Very consistant.

Heydeerman thismight sound funny but I can not touch pinky and thumb together on either hand. I have short fingers and thick hands.

loco_cacahuate has it right.  Get a two point anchor.  Also, for me it works best if I hold using back tension for a good 2 seconds before I release.  In order to get a 2 point anchor, you may have to switch to 3 under, which helped me alot anyway.  I use Rick Welches style of shooting and it works well for me.  I have a double anchor.  I hold, and settle into the shot while maintaining back tension.  When I started shooting this way, I was amazed at how much better I could shoot.
