Title: Temp longbow Sight Pin?
Post by: bigcountry on May 04, 2007, 11:09:00 AM
I am thinking of using a small clamp and leather to protect my wood, and JB weld a small sight pin just for bareshaft tuning.

Is this a silly idea?

Another way is to put a tennis ball on the ground in front of the target and line the arrow tip with the ball for each shot.

Or, just use masking tape to tape a stick (matchstick, twig, bamboo, whatever) to the bow.

Not silly at all.

bigcountry,

Using a sight of some sort (pin, tip of arrow, mark on the riser, whatever)is definitely a good idea when working on your form or doing something like bareshaft tuning where consistent aiming is needed to see if the arrows are hitting together.

I normally recommend it to folks new to shooting trad equipment so that they can get there form down. Once you can consistently shoot the same way every time then you are ready to start learning how to aim. If you try to learn to aim before you set your form you are just wasting your time and getting frustrated.

Just got a new recurve, and working on a few things.  I was hoping I could use my longbow arrows, but ain't going to happen.  Hard to tune things up when you got a weak spine and things seem to be out of whack.

Its a 50lb draw dreamcatcher.  I was hoping i could use my 2016 aluminums or 60-65lb cedars.  Looks like I need 2216 alumunums.

Bigcountry, I have the same bow and 2117 at 31 inches with 125 pnt are just a little stiff when drawn to 30inches. 2216 shoots for me from a 61@30 chek mate. I think a 2018 to maybe 2117 would be closer.Don't buy a bunch of arrows without trying a 2018,they shot good from mine.

RKing, I shoot a 29" draw or less.  Think that will make a difference?

Whats your draw length?  If you shoot 28" and your bow is 50#@28" then both 2016's and 60-65 cedars should shoot well.  A 2216 would likely be too stiff.
