Title: Fun way to practice
Post by: rybohunter on May 07, 2007, 05:35:00 PM
I'm somewhat new to the trad thing and I was told to try and shoot tennis balls tossed in the yard for practice. I did one better and roam around my yard shooting the fuzzy little dandelion tops. It's tough yet fun and they "poof" when you hit em.

Yep....dandelion tops are great targets.....glow in the dark start from Wally World are fun to at night.

I like shooting cans or plastic soda bottles when I showing new commers or compound/gun hunters, I like them hearing the noise when I make contact.

I agree the noise when a solid hit is made is great positive reinforcement, cans and plastic bottles work well, add some sand and they don't blow around if its windy.

A Nerf ball hanging from a long rope is a lot of fun also. You can swing it left and right or back and forth. Good practice for pheasant hunting.

Take your target, hang your bottle  from a piece of string where it is dead center of your target....shoot the bottle from about 10-20 yards, when someone says, they can do that, shoot the string and make the bottle drop, watch their mouths drop..lol

I like evening shoots....starlings, grackles etc...my back yard is filled with "targets" like dandelions, leaves but trying to hit these birds makes you really bear down and concentrate. Best practice in the world....

Tennis balls, and especially golf balls are my favorite. I shoot my blunt-tipped rabbit arrows at them. When you hit a golf ball good and square with a blunt, boy does it go flying! Lots of fun, very good reinforcement.

I used to shoot thistle tops with judos, and those blow up nicely like dandelions, but you've got to really nail them. The problem is that then I was spreading thistles, so I figured I'd better stop.  :(

Just started shooting at a nalgene water bottle with one of those Bunny Buster tips. Works great and makes a loud bongking sound when you hit it square. The Bunny Buster won't go through it so the set up is great for durability and I hit it more often then the golf balls I was trying. Not a bad size for arial practice too, if you can find that friend who will sign on to throwing them for you.

I like to shoot 2 liter bottles filled with gasoline with a flame-tipped arrow from about 90 yards...makes a lot of noise when you hit it.  :biglaugh:

A soccer or volley ball kicked by a partner and shot with a rubber blunt is great practice.  Kicked easy for a slow moving deer or hard for bunnies or running deer.

If you have room throw it bouncing down the driveway. About the best practice for moving game I know of.

Just did something new for fun.  My black hole target is out in backyard yard 43 yds off my porch.  I have 6 large tress and 6 large bushes in the back yard.  The game is, leave target as is but you have to shoot from, beside, around, under, over ect. any tree or bush in the yard.  And don't make it a gimme shot.
