If we could get a 3D shoot with these three who would win? Of course we are talking Howard in his prime and getting used to shooting 3D. Sorta of one of those computer boxing matches.
-
Like most sports, there is no one dominate player.......Any given Sunday... But it would be hard to vote against howard based on the reports we read. The things is, you are probably only talking about a few points seperating 1st and 3rd.
-
I've shoot with Ricky Welch in 1992 and Rod Jenkins 2005 06 but not Mr. Hill(Im not that old).It realy depends whos on that day. I know Rod not shooting as much as he would like to ( work comes frist)The best I hope to get is 10 to 15 points behind them. on a good day.
-
Uh, Howard won 196 consecutive comps in a row, has anyone even come close to something like that? No disrespect to Mr. Welch or Mr. Jenkins but we're talkin' about Howard Hill. But then legends have a funny way about them don't they...
-
My money would be on Ricky :)
-
Rod,
You old dog. Are you going to the IBO Worlds this year? I am going to make the LONG trip this year.
Bill
-
Hey Bill! Yeah I'm planning to attend. Looking forward to visting with you.
-
toss-up!!!!!! :) I aint touchin this one!!!
-
Who's Ricky Welch ??
-
Who's Ricky Welch? Man he could show up at a 3D shooting a broomstick strung with clothes line and outshoot most. Him shooting against Rod Jenkins, now that would be a pay-per-view event.
-
Ther you go....pay per view NOW thats a good idea!!!!
Hope things are goin well for you Rod
-
Curlis (Bill)... I thought you were teaching up in New York. Heck, to think of it... I haven't seen you post in a bit. So, did you make a wrong turn somewhere and end up in California? GOD Bless, David
-
I have never met Rod or HOward, but Rickey is unreal. I went to his shooting school last month and it is well, well, worth the money and time you will invest...
-
I need to make a PS2 video with all three....
-
Rick Welch , maybe makes one of the best shooting recurves I have shot!...they aint the fanciest , but they flat out SHOOT!!!!!!a real bowhunter bow...
-
I shot with Rick one time and he missed the kill zone and got a "five", the other 24 shots were "tens" though. :notworthy: :notworthy: Nice guy too.

"Uh, Howard won 196 consecutive comps in a row, has anyone even come close to something like that? No disrespect to Mr. Welch or Mr. Jenkins but we're talkin' about Howard Hill. But then legends have a funny way about them don't they..." vermontrad
This is very true. It's also true that these were field archery tournaments and many of the targets were set for 90 to 100 yards. Also, "in his prime" he put out a standing challenge to shoot against anyone if he could pick half of the targets.
But, I think that until either Mr. Jenkins or Mr. Welch, (absolutely no disrespect to either) agrees to let the other shoot an apple AND a prune off the top of his head, as Ken Wilhelm allowed Mr. Hill to do, (you can see it on dvd now, very cool) I think I'd have to go with 'Ol One Shot. :D
-
Amen....
To the above post....

Howard Hill would probably be shooting a longbow about 30 lbs. heavier in draw weight than the other two guys, with straight limbs, straight grip and a sight window cut nowhere close to center, with wood arrows. If they all shot that kind of tackle, my vote would definitely go to Mr. Hill.

I would bet there are many shooters out there that could out shoot the archery legends of the past. The problem is that trad shooters are now a small side class of archery rather than main stream and it is very hard for a recurve or longbow shooter to gain "legend" status anymore.
Many shooters win championships and shoots time and time again but are not recognized for there achievements like they would of been in the past.
-
I totally agree with ya, Tom A, which I don't believe is taking away from anything those archers who have or recently achieved "legend" type status.
I believe there are at least a few unsung legends that are capable of surpasing the achievments of those that have achieved "legend' status...but the only way to achieve that kind of status is by participating in events that are viewed by a greater number of people.
Some just don't feel the need or desire to compete at that level.

How sad when all the great things Mr. Hill has done with a bow is now forgotten. They said no one has ever dominated one sport like Howard Hill has. His speed of shooting, his long range kills, his hits on running game, his under water shots on fish,Exhibitions at 3 worlds fairs and the White house,172lb pull plus.I say plus because he past the full 28" arrow mark and brought that arrow around to the other side of the bow.His winning the Hollwood part for Robinhood and intentionally splitting that arrow .Even John Shultz his student who can smoke an aspirin out of the air says he is not even close.Too bad hes not here to defend himself. My choice is Howard Hill.
-
Some folks will never get it cvarcher.
Many have only heard vaguely about Howard Hill. If you read everything there is that is written about him, watch all the dvd's available of his actual shooting, and listen to those who shot with him that are still alive such as,John Shultz and Bob Wesley, and also those who were a little younger but that knew him, like his nephew Jerry Hill and Craig Ekin, you realize that a human being is not supposed to be able to do the things that Howard could do with a bow and arrow, and especially, with the pressure on.
There's still quite a few of us around that get it. :D
-
Amen!
-
I don't hear anything about Ricky or Rod having enough confidence to shoot fruit off of someones head or shooting robin hoods with wood arrows on command. Different time different place, but just like I would bet on Rocky in a Rocky Vs Clay fight, I will go with Howard

Gentlemen....this thread was surely started in good nature and not an attempt to "cull" any of these 3 fine genetlemen mentioned. However, to publicly imply that someone who has a different opinion about such a fanciful topic "doesn't get it" is bordering on disrespect. Each is entitled to his own views...but let's not make this personal.
I believe this thread has run it's course.
