Title: One eye or Two eyes open?
Post by: BrianP on July 08, 2007, 11:27:00 PM
How do you all shoot...point or aim...one eye closed or both open?  I have been shooting traditional bows for just about 10 years and have always kept both eyes open when shooting...sort of like pointing a shotgun.  I certainly have never attained the accuracy I desired so tonight I experimented.  I always finish shooting with 10-15 flu-flu arrows so my arrow-dog Deuce can fetch them.  On my last shot tonight, I told him the "deer"...aimed with one eye like I would a rifle...put the point of my arrow about 3 feet or so over the 3D deer and shot.  Low and behold, I hit the chest at just under 50 yards.  I know this is pure luck but I was surprised that I even came close.  I never shoot my recurves or longbows over 25-30 yards.  Don't worry, I have no intention to ever shoot over about 25-30 yards, but tomorrow night, I think I will try shooting closer in and aiming with one eye closed.  So what do you all shoot with..one eye or two eyes opened?  Thx, Brian

I shot for years with my left eye closed, I was crose dominate.
Now I shoot with both open, Left or right handed.
If your going to use the Gap system ya will have to close one eye.....
Better depth perception if ya keep both open.

Mike,
It was definitely different...crazy feeling in fact.  And yes, there was no depth perception.  Just looking for ideas and pros/cons.  thx, Brian

Both open. no eye dominance problem that way.

Both open. Depth perception and distance judging are two eye dependent for more accurracy

I shoot with both eyes closed(pray)!Hahaha. No, not really, both open. Agree with those above about the depth perception. I've tried all the dominant eye stuff, and don't believe I have one. Maybe I'm a freak of nature.

I've been shooting the last few months with my left eye closed.  I haven't noticed any problems with depth perception at all.  I look at my target with both eyes open, bring the bow up (or level it out), draw, close my left eye, pick a spot and either aim it or let it fly.  I've actually gotten more accurate doing this.  Maybe it's that it slowed me down to focus more.  Only problem that seems consitant now is the "pluck".  Still working on that one.

Dough Boy I have seen you shoot and recommend you shut "both" eyes.  LOL LOL  Sorry Brian, Jamie made me say that.  Way back when dirt and I came into being I shot sight and a compound and shut the left eye.  Now I'm older, much older, and have more sense I shoot ever thing with both eyes open.  How for OSTA Sunday, HOT?

When shooting right handed I close my left eye, when shooting left handed they are both open.
