Title: The more I shot, the worse it got?
Post by: Burnsie on September 03, 2007, 08:27:00 PM
Anybody else have this happen.  I have been shooting well lately, I went out tonight and things started out OK, but it didn't take long before arrows were spraying all over the place.  I told myself I was taking things for granted and needed to get back to basics and really focus. Seemed like the more I thought about focusing and anchoring ...etc the worse it got.  I decided to quit for the night before I started engraining whatever it was I was doing wrong. They say when a baseball player is in a batting groove the ball looks like a beach ball coming in and they can actually see the rotation of the seams.  Some nights its like that for me when I shoot. When I draw the bow everything just feels right the spot I am focusing on is in sharp focus and I know when I loose the arrow it is going where I want.  Not tonight, I had no idea where the arrow was going when I let go - very frustrating.

quit shooting at a target, and practice Blind Bale shooting for a bit. get close, close your eyes and concentrate on the basics. try it a day or two and see if things don't improve.

I think it happens it everyone from time to time. Alot of it is concentration, if your mind is not on what you are doing it wont work. When it happens to me I go back in the house. Mad usually but I still go in.lol. Like my friend said , I've got a thousand dollars of archery equipment tryiny to line it up with a 50 cent head.

Hey all,

When I was teaching martial arts we were taught to recognize a pattern of events that occur when you start messing up.
When you screw up something you tend to get more emotional about it then when you "Ace" a particular physical movement.
Example:  The flush of emotions you have when you totaly miss the target and bust an arrow on the side of the house are more intense and lasting then when you put 3 arrows on an area the size of a quarter.
This emotional Flush is more likely to "Lock" in that particular "Bad Habit"  This is one explanation as to why bad habits are so hard to kick once they set in.  You are more emotionaly invested in them.
How do you fix this?  Heh,  Good Luck,  Perhaps learn to take the bad shots with more grace and dont let them get you worked up.  Cant say its worked for me, but understanding is the first step to fixing a problem.

I was doing the same thing. I read something Terry Green replied to almost the same thing. He suggested to the member posting the thread to concentrate more on the back tension and the shot will just come. It worked for me
