Title: How do you shoot through a fence
Post by: Earl E. Nov...mber on April 15, 2009, 06:47:00 AM
Here's the scenario.. Your setting in a ground blind and you have a good Tom come in at about 20 yards.. At about 15 yards is a 5 strand Barb wire fence, It's legal to shoot on the other side as you do have permission, but how do you get an arrow through the fence without hitting a wire?

Pick a spot on the birds kill zone...if the wire is not in the way... aim small and let her fly..

I just muffed a fence shot - stalked a rabbit from about 95 yards to about 15 yards, shifted for the shot - short.  Thinking back, I psyched myself out of it.  For some reason the hole in the fence seemed smaller than the bullseye I'm aiming for, even though it wasn't.  I like to think of myself as immune to target panic - I tend to shoot better at live game if anything - but I guess I was wrong.  Nothing to do but try again next time.

(worse yet, I only had one arrow, and the cheeky bugger took two hops after my shot and then stopped again.  I nearly had to shoo him off of my arrow.)

The best thing is to not even think about it. If you think about it you will hit it. Wait for the shot, put the fence out of your mind, shoot like it is not there, eat turkey. If you have ever shot with "friends" you know they can psyche you out with the power of suggestion then laugh when you miss or hit an unintended target.

Practice. It would be no different than shooting throug an opening in the brush.  Go shoot through a fence and it will come to ya.

You wont learn sitting here looking at this screen.  "[dntthnk]"

Pick an opening in  the fence that coincides with the trajectory path of your arrow, that aligns with the kill zone on the Tom...now aim at the spot you pick in the fence, make the shot, the arrow goes through the fence and the poor turkey is in the path of the arrow!

If you shoot like I do aim at the fence and you`ll miss it and kill the Turkey.RC

Well now that you know  that wire  is there, you're S.O.L.  :D

I do similar to Rod, except I position myself so my arrow will pass through the fence, and then forget it's there.

Don't forget about paradox if you are close. I ruined 3 arrows one day trying to figure out why I didn't make that first shot.

Sorry for fishin ya guys, but there is a technique that works and few people realize it.
The trick is to realize the line of flight is always higher than the line of sight, except on impact.
Consequently you really don't want to see the point of impact, rather you want the lower wire to cross it in your line of sight.
What I prefer to do is come to draw while looking at "The Spot" then adjust my stance so the wire intersects it (as best you can do)
Then forget about the wire and shoot.
If you have your point of impact centered vertically between two wires,(that is human nature) you only have the top half of the area to work with for trajectory and chances are good you will hit the upper wire.
Yes the same technique works with holes in the brush and other windows as well.
Your working against "Mother Nature" because it is natural to always center the object in the middle of the window.
Good luck and lets hear how it works for you.

That's a good tip to remember.

Just like what everyone else here said, if you think about it, you're going to hit it.  Just like when someone puts that foam target vitals right behind a tree.  You gotta focus on what you need to hit and void out any objects in and around that flight path.

I kind of agree if you think about it you will hit the fence.  I played golf for 2 years and hit every d#@$ tree on the course trying to avoid them.

"The trick is to realize the line of flight is always higher than the line of sight, except on impact."

Yep.  I once, about 12 years ago, shot a nice mulie after realizing that my arrow will arc.  I took the shot and sure enough my arrow cleared the top of the sage and drilled him perfect.

I stalked him and just did not have a direct line of site shot.  Except through the tall sage.
