Title: Too much back tension?
Post by: SpikeMaster on May 01, 2009, 08:35:00 PM
Is there such a thing as getting too much back tension? In the past I've had the problem of shooting left because of not getting enough back tension. Well, lately I've been working really hard on squeezing my shoulder blades together. Let me add that I'm right-handed and the arrows I'm shooting are a little stiff for the bow I'm shooting. I'm shooting consistently it's just about 4-6 inches to the right. I tried shooting without squeezing my shoulder blades together as much and I started shooting more to the center of the target. Is there a happy medium when it comes to back tension or am I doing something else wrong to cause me to shoot right?

I suppose it's possible but keep in mind that shooting left is an indication of not shooting with enough back tension or having underspined arrows which means your draw weight it less than the arrows need.

That said you can overdraw the bow but if the bow is moving forward upon release the right impact is most likely a weak spine issue and not related to form. The bigger problem is shooting the same exact form every time, especially under pressure.

I have felt that to, shooting to the right, and wonder about to much backtension, but I think that it´s bad bone to bone alignment, so my bowarm moves the the right when I increase backtension.

I went out shooting Saturday and figured out my right shooting problem. I wasn't gripping the bow correctly. When I started gripping closer to the base of my thumb my groups moved to the center. I also haven't been shooting much lately and my overall form in general wasn't consistent. After I worked on getting my form more consistent my groups tightened up and moved to the center.

I always worked on form from 4 or 5 feet infront of a target and didn't worry about where it hit. I just wanted to get my form right. If you are trying something new to you it might help. IMO proper form is the main thing in shooting a bow accurately. I still do it ocasionally just to keep the way a proper shot feels fresh in my memory. Then you are only focused on one thing.
