Title: Gap shooting bow
Post by: nilzgilz on February 06, 2010, 10:17:00 AM
Hello I am new to trad bowhunting and am still unsure of which aiming method to use and have not bought a bow yet.  I may try gap shooting, but I have a question.  Are there certain types or style of bows better for gap shooting than others.  (Such as a cut to center shelf, etc)
Thank you for your time.

Gap shooters hold the bow at full draw for long enough to place the point of the arrow on some predetermined point.  Because of this requirement to hold the bow at full draw, you should be sure to get a bow you can comfortably hold at full draw.  It doesn't matter whether it is a longbow or recurve, cut to center or not.

In a tournament, you may need to shoot 50-100 arrows accurately, whereas in hunting you only need to shoot one arrow accurately, so there are obvious differences in what "holding comfortably at full draw" means, depending on what activity you plan to do.

In general, people can shoot a longer bow more accurately than a shorter bow, regardless of your aiming method.  So unless your hunting needs require a shorter bow, I recommend you go with a longbow of 64" or longer, or a recurve of 60" or longer.

Gap shooting involves knowing the the gap between the intended point of impact and the tip of your arrow.I've seen groups the size of a quarter at 20 yrds with this method.i'd start with a bow in low 30's and move to a heavier bow later if you are hunting.

Gap or Split Vision does NOT require an archer to "hold" the bow at full draw nor for any specific length of time, OR reqire "knowing" the Gap in terms of "inches".

To answer your question Nilzgilz-No. However, some bow designs facilitate a "clutter free" sight picture which I beleive allows faster and more precise aiming using the gap method.
