Title: Reverse grip on bow string
Post by: raideranch on February 14, 2010, 01:23:00 AM
Anyone shoot their bows with a reverse grip on the string (palm outwards)?

I can see a great potential for injury if I even tried.

That is a good question. I have been to many trad 3d events. I have seen a lot of unusual shooting methods, but I have I ever seen that.
Compound guys do it that way with release, but no trad guys that I know.

You would need to shoot off the opposite side of your bow, because the string would come off your fingers on that side. Same as shooting with a thumb ring.

I foresee a visit to the orthopedic surgeon...

I remember another movie that I saw the bow being drawn in this manner. It was Lord of the Rings. These hideouse monsters were drawing their bows backwards. I of course tried it and it only works for a half draw. Thats Hollywood for ya. They show swords hitting edge upon edge too. No swordsman in their right mind would do that except an advancing move low by the guard.

I just tried this shooting method this evening and I LIKE it. I can hold steadier and get a smoother pull shooting like this.  True I have only done it for one session but so far I think it works.  It actually reduced the strain on my fingers (I shoot with a tab).  I was only shooting with a 45+/- weight bow so it may not work as well with a heavier draw weight but I think I will try it with my 55lb tomorrow.

Cool, I have a double shelf model and now i can try the other shelf. Should be good for fun after practice. Have to try this outside though, my furnace doesn't have any holes in it and I want to keep it that way.  :)

Well as some predicted (you guys are so smart :-)
I have had a terrible time getting consistency shooting this way.  I feel it is because of the way the string is rolling off of my fingers.  Probably would work if you shot off the other side (as Don Stokes suggested).

Well live and learn (I still liked the feel of it) oh well :-)
