Title: String Hitting Chest
Post by: 47pronghorn on March 11, 2010, 10:51:00 PM
When I draw my 62" longbow the string hits me in the chest before I reach full draw. Do you ignore it and complete your draw of do you change form somehow?

Height? Weight? Anchor point and draw length would help also.

When I get to full draw my string just does touch the side of my chest. I don't pull back any further than that.

Fewer pushups and more twinkies!

Your case may be wildly different but when I was having that problem, I opened my stance a bit and the problem went away.

No the bow should not hit your chest (you did say chest and not clothing) while drawing. Can you post a video?

6'2", 215lb, anchor is Thumb Behind Jaw (only way i can get a good solid anchor, I feel like there is a lot of variable with a mouth anchor, for me), draw length is 29.5"

Correct, the string hits my chest. I'll see if I can get a video this weekend, it's raining cats and dogs in Nashville.

Try to open your stance some.  They still make chest protectors I think.  I had to use one in the 60s/70s shooting longer 66" target bow.

You can always lean slightly forward and tilt your head toward the target slightly as well. And I will refrain from a bra joke at this point.

Dustin, try cant bow more and lean forward more.  I noticed one time that if I intentionally draw more on your old Saluki bow the string would also hit my chest.  It was because I opened my bow arms too much and not able to lock my arm after release.

Hey Ming. I see what your saying, so my shoulders are most likely not in line with the target. Hope that doesn't add to much more draw length though, my 62" pronghorn starts stacking really bad after 28".

47ph,
If you draw a line from you to the target and you put both of your toes on this line that is a square stance.  If you pull your left foot back a few inches off the line while keeping the right foot on the line that is an open stance.  If you put you left foot over the line that is a closed stance.  Same principles appy to other sports like golf.

Use an arrow on the ground pointing to the target to get the picture.

I had the same problem the other day, put just a touch more cant and shortened my clicker a hair, was drawing hair over 29", alteast now that problem is solved....2 million to go!
