Title: Dropping bow arm
Post by: wisconsinteacher on March 22, 2010, 05:06:00 PM
I noticed that I have been dropping my bow arm the last few time shooting.  To me it is hard to practice keeping it up when shooting at a blank bail at close ranges due to the fact that it all happens and is over very quickly.  What are some tips to keeping my bow arm up throughout my shot and follow through?

Ask a mod to move this posting this to the shooters forum.

Keep your head down. Use brighter fletching. That may help keep you from moving the bow trying to see where the arrow hits. After each shot check your self everything about your shot what was not right fix.

Rod Jenkins stood behind me and told me he was going to whack me in the head everytime I did it...... You would be amazed how easy it is to keep it up not knowing if you are going to get whacked in the head or not ?   :scared:

I just keep my bow hand/arm in the same spot, until I see/hear my arrow hit the target.

Low and back bow shoulder, stretch your bow shoulder toward the target, use good back tension at full draw.  It's all connected!  If everything is correct, your bow will jump straight to the target, your bow hand will stay pretty much in one place and your string hand will slide back along your face -- not jump out away from the face.  Hard to say much without seeing you shoot.  But commonly, the dropping of the bow hand is because you're using shoulder and arm muscles against the tension on the bow at full draw and when released, those muscles react to the sudden change in tension.

I do a lot of blank bag(bale) worh with my longbow and sometimes I have the same problem.  :banghead:   What I do is move in so that you arrow is 1-2 paces from your target and make sure you can't miss, than as you start your draw close your eyes. I read this in Bryon Ferguson book and practise my release this way. If you do it enough you will find that you will stop trying to see where the arrow hits and your form will improve. Hope it helps!  :archer:

Back in the 60s my friend would hold a field point under my tricep.  That was immediate feedback and incentive.

From the start, before raising the bow, rotate the elbow, then push down toward the ground which will lower your bow shoulder, in a "swooping" motion, lift the bow up, keep the bow side scapula forward, push toward the target with your palm (you should feel a slight stretch along the entire bottom of the arm). Keep the tricept muscles tight.

I worked on shooting last night and one thing I found that helped a lot was keeping my head down.  When I did that, I was focused on my spot the entire time and was able to see the arrow land where I was looking.  I had the same problem shooting trap.  I always want to peak.  I am going to write "Keep your head down" on my upper limb to remind myself every shot.

"What are some tips to keeping my bow arm up throughout my shot and follow through?"

PROPER ALIGNMENT....its dang near a cure all.  Cures most dang near everything negative a shooter can experience.

Quick lesson. After each shoot and when arrow hits the target keep your bowarm strait and count to 5.

Best repeat that and add this......

Just simply 'holding still' if you are muscling the bow is not a fix. ....its a bandaide on a broke bone.  Fix the problem and don't cover it up.

I had a problem with the bow slashing downward on my release.  Now I don't; Terry's proper alignment was the key. Moebow's explanation is a good one.  I have also found that proper alignment means that when I reach full draw the bow feels like it loses about ten pounds or so since with the bone alignement holding the tension my muscles don't have to.
