Title: Help......
Post by: Cherry Tree on May 24, 2010, 10:32:00 AM
Hey guys!

Ok ive been having problems with my shooting.

1. I cant seem to hold my bow back    :banghead:   once i hit my mark its gone and i dont like that i would like to hold it back so i no im at full draw and ready for the shot.So any help on training the brain to hold it back would help alot!

2.Ok once i let go of my arrow my arm drops and im not sure why but should it drop or not? any help on getting it to hold still after the shot would help alot!
Thanks!

In #1, you likely have target panic.  I've had it too.  Lot's of fixes for it, some work and some don't.  There's a book by Jay Kidwell that had the technique that works for me.

For #2, you should be holding the bow still until the arrow hits the target.

1) Could you be over bowed?  Maybe you need a lighter bow draw weight.

2) Follow through is important, hae you been to a class of any kind?

Believe it or not these are both easy problems to work on. It may just take a while to fix. Here's what I got from my coach:

Problem #1: Use what's called a Wall Drill or Don't Shoot Drill. Pick a spot on a cement wall in your basement (just in case!), nock an arrow, come to full draw and hold, then let down. What's happened is you've trained your brain that coming to anchor means letting go, that's what you have to unwire

Problem #2: You need a shot conclusion, some cue such as a shoulder touch or the sound/view of the arrow hitting the target that indicates the arrow has left the bow and the shot is over. I use the shoulder touch. Train this on the blank bale.

Ok ill try just pulling and holding and see how it gos.

NJWoodsman im not sure if i understand #2 maybe explain it a little different sorry!

any other ways would be great to here because if one dont work ill try again a different way because i want to get this over with!

im not over bowed ive been shooting a 45# bow just to try to fix these problems i normally shoot 50's

Thanks!

Cherry tree, I had the same problem about 6mos. ago, I stopped it by shooting blank bale at 5-8'. Make sure you have a good backstop, move distance above from bag or bale, start your draw and close your eyes and hold steady, at full draw count 1,2,3 than let go,don't move for the count of 3. Do this for your next 3-5 shooting sessions for at least 20 arrows, and see if it helps. I know in my case it improved my shooting 30% and cured the problems.     I do this every time I shoot for at least 10 arrows to remind the brain! Best of luck........Crow  :archer:

Well i went out and tryed it i went and pulled back with my eyes closed and did it for awhile and then i went and pulled back pointing at a tree with my eyes open did that for awhile with no problems and then i saw a white thing in the grass and i thought ok just hold it dont let go and let off so i pulled back held it and then the arrow went flying and i hit what i was looking at but it was a rock about the size of a quarter at 20yrds broke my arrow tip right off and now i no i have no control!  :(

CT, just take it easy. I have been shooting all toll over 25yrs. and have had bad days.  :banghead:   This is not going to happen overnite. To solve a problem ,you have to reconize it and you have so incorporate some of the above advise and work at it. If you want to succeed you will.Practice, practice, practice!  :archer:  I'm sure you'll recieve more good advise here, try it until you find what works for you.

CT, it's going to take more than a day of working on it.  From personal experience, it takes at least a week to feel somewhat in control of your shot.  People say that it takes about a month to break a habit.  Make up your mind that you won't be shooting any arrows for about a week.  Like the good folks here have been suggesting, practice should be just drawing, anchoring, and letting down.  I'd say do this for at least 3 days.  Be patient with yourself!

I am new to this myself but have learned a tremendous amount on this site. I have a pre-ignition problem myself,,,I seem to align the arrow during draw and tend to let fly before or immediately following reaching anchor. I have found one solution,,, that is, during draw, I align the arrow off to the right of the target.
When I hit anchor, I snug it in and set elevation, then align windage and let fly. Sounds crazy but this forces me to hold for about 3 seconds and has improved my group size dramatically.

The best way to fix what you are doing is to use a clicker. Your brain is telling you to shoot because everything is lined up and your sight picture looks good. With the clicker you will have to get your sight picture where you want it and then you keep pulling until you hear the click and then release.
If you are snap shooting and are accurate there is nothing wrong with shooting like that. I find I am more accurate shooting when I release when I reach anchor. Keep trying different techniques until you find something that you like.

lol sounds like you did a great job to me the shot should just happen . you held obviously as long as you needed to and exicuted a perfect shot . dont beet yourself up over it just keep practiceing the practice and letting a shot off once in a while shows you how well its all working. or not.   :knothead:
