I shoot split finger and have noticed that all the guys at the local 3D matches who shoot 3-under, shoot in a classic stand-up style.
Is this some function of the 3-under style? Meaning does canting the bow mess up this shooting form?
I've tried 3-under years ago and did not like it at all. No doubt it works, I just felt like I did not have good control of the arrow for moving shots and weird positions while shooting through wooded shooting lanes. (Like under branches and way down low.) As for moving shots: I don't shoot at running deer but I have shot a few that were meandering past me at close range. Having good control of the arrow is comforting.

3-under is just as versatile as split, it is just a personal feel thing some like it and some dont. Im no Bear or Hill but i do hit what im looking at most of the time and have good control of the arrow for moving shots and weird positions while shooting through wooded shooting lanes. I bend at the knees and cant the bow.

Many tournament shooters that use the 3 under system typically use a gap sighting system as well and tend to not cant their bows as much and keep them more upright.

I'm with Carbon Jack on this. I want more control over the arrow on arial targets, moving targets and generally any targets so split since 1955.

reddogge, I do a lot of shooting at pigeons as they fly out of my barn. Blunts without flu-flus. (lots of open field around me.) I cannot imagine shooting moving targets using 3-under. Of course I did not grow up shooting that way to begin with. I guess a guy can get used to any system if he sets his mind to it.
I have no doubt 3-under is superior at static target shooting. Most 3D winners are now using it. I find competition really does wring-out the best form for pure accuracy. Hard to argue with a man who is beating you shooting 3-under.
That said, it ain't for me. I'm too old and set in my way. Besides, I like the traditional split finger with my traditional Hill longbows. (and hybrids lol)

I shoot three under and cant the bow with no problems. I don't have any control problems with my arrows while shooting 3 under if I have a good nock fit.

I shoot both ways to change my point of aim at varying distance. The only difference changing finger position will have is to cange your point of aim, imo neither is more versatile than the other. Also I have not percieved any change in arrow flight from bow cant as long as you bend your waist to maintain your normal upright alignment.

I shot split finger for 35+ years until i bought a bow from chris surtees that was tillered 3 under. I also shot a glove for all those years. In one felt swoop i switched to a tab and 3 under and i have never shot better. Just lucky i guess

For what it's worth, 3-under just feels more comfortable to me. Split never did, although I tried to make it do so for many years. I don't feel I'm in any less control over the arrow either. 3-under just feels right for me.

I tend to shoot my target Recurve straight up becase I'm shooting long range IFAA Field using an elevated flipper rest but when I'm shooting 3D with my Saluki Ibex 3 under off the shelf I tend to cant the Bow just a little.
Think it could be more to do with using an arrow rest than the way you hold the string, might be worth checking next time you shoot a 3D event.
