Title: Brain fart reminder
Post by: Zradix on December 27, 2010, 11:31:00 PM
Hi Everyone.

I'm still pretty new at this. Only 3yrs under my belt and I'm not that great a shot.

I've been shooting high lately and it has been driving me nuts.
Thought it was my grip, my release, nock ht..etc.

I had a brain fart.
I had finally gotten to the point of not looking down my arrow to aim. Well my brain forgot where to put my bow arm..plain and simple.
It took me a week to look down my arrow..lol
I was just holding high...felt like a dunce.
So..I looked down my arrow to aim for 20-30 shots and that's all it took to retrain my brain.

Guess I'll see if it stuck in the morn.

Just passing the reminder..Although I might be the only one this clueless...lol

I use to use my arrows for aiming but I'm trying to train myself to shoot instinctively, its taking a while and I'm probably still better at the arrow aiming but I'm getting better.

I think if you do everything the same enough times you can shoot anyway you want.

This recalls something I had once heard.  You develop a bad habit but get used to it.  Your arrows strike centered around the target.  When you change your form (or some other variable) it shifts the point of impact off the center, but to a smaller grouping.  Intuitevily you feel it didn't help because you're off target . . . but it did because you are grouping better and where you should have been concentrating your focus.   You just need to work it back to centered on the target.  Sometimes it is as simple as altering the strike plate/pad thickness on the riser.

When I had to get bifocals it messed me up big time - so I know I am "reading" the arrow subconsciously.  For years now I have had Varilux (lineless "progressive" focals) and I may never get it back.  At least that's my excuse.    :biglaugh:

During 3-d shoots even if I'm shooting well I still get shocked when one flies completely over the target's back now and then.

I have noticed lately, when I screw up I can run it through again in my mind and know what I did wrong, It's usually concentration. I use to be able to do this without thinking at all about it, but that was from 57-74, now that I'm back at it at this age I have to figure out everything to be half way decent, but at least now I am learning about the mechanics of what I use to be able to do naturally. Keep practicing and don't forget to use the blank bail if you have problems.

Happy new year.

P.S. Stumpkiller, I give you credit for shooting with glasses, I can't seem to be able to get the hang of it so I shoot without them. Luckily I can still shoot pretty good without them.
