Title: Arrows hitting left consistantly
Post by: Stump73 on January 23, 2011, 09:43:00 PM
Started shooting traditional several years ago, but do to on cut tendon and nerve on rt index finger havent shot in 3 yrs.Have been shooting about 2 months now. Still arrows flying left of spot i pick. Sometimes they group at center ,but mostly they are 4 to 8in left at 10 yards. I'm shooting rt handed grizzly 58in 50# @28. My draw is  26 1/2 and also shooting split finger anchoring with my middle finger to corner of my mouth. My arrows are Easton xx75 2018 camo hunter @ 29in long with 3 5" fletchings left helical,  field points are 125gr.

First, be sure to keep your string hand from flipping to the right.  Second 2018s are probably stiff at your draw length.  You are pulling and shooting about 45#.  If you are generally shooting good groups but to the left look to your arrow spine.

dont cut no more arrow off,you will stiffin it,,go with a heavier head and that will weaken it,and it should bring it right,or you will have to go to 2016 and start again..

I had the same problem. First I had to tune the arrow properly using the OL Adcock method (link below). That helped alot but I was still shooting just a tad left so I started canting the bow just a little and now they go were Im looking if I do my part on form, release  and being still.  More weight up front should weaken the spine and cutting the arrow length should make the spine stiffer.

Would that messup the balance of the arrow?

Yep, what floodman said.  Shortening will stiffen your SPINE (not spline).  Heavier heads will weaken the spine.  Not sure what you mean by the balance of the arrow.  As long as the balance point is in front (towards the point)of the measured mid point of the arrow your "balance" will be good.

Shed I just ran your numbers in Stu's calculator.

Had to guess a bit on the bow but I sure I am fairly close. Looks like your over spine.

Since your arrows are cut you would need to add about another 125g up front.

Over spined ! You should be able to see your arrows kicking to the left ? I have a similar problem now while experimenting with GT3555's and 1535's, for my LB.

Make sure it's not a form error, have someone watch you shoot and see if your bow arm is as steady as you think it is after you release.
Next you may want to look into how you are drawing the bow, are you drawing the string straight back or do you come into anchor from the side, if yes are you setting into to your anchor before release or are you releasing when you get to anchor.

2018 will react to heavier point weight. If you were shooting carbon their would be a problem. Change to heavier points.

I bought 145gr field points, which was the heaviest my local archery shop had. Brought them home and shot right at center center. I  ran the numbers on stus calculator using the new points, it said the arrow spine was 58.9# and the required spine was 59.8#. Think I will try and paper tune it tomorrow. Any suggestions on what kind of paper to use? Would news paper work or would it rip to easy? Thanks for the help, Mike

News paper and wrapping paper have worked well for me paper tuning.  I would recommend bare shaft tuning also.
