Title: need help, problem with finger slipping on release!
Post by: adkmountainken on February 13, 2011, 03:03:00 PM
ok i have a reoccuring problem when shooting which is my bottom finger slipping off the string before i release. i shoot 3 under and every now and then it jumps ups and bites me! i was shooting at a 3d turny today and was doing really well, half way through it started. i finshed shooting pretty much with just two fingers and did ok. the problem is i usually shoot #55 plus bows and that would be a MAJOR proble. today with #49 i could adjust and i want to fix this proble. i tried digging in with a stronger hook but still it would happen and with a depper hook it though off my form. any help or suggestions?

Are you able to feel the string with each of your three fingers?  When I'm shooting a lighter poundage bow, I can feel the pressure being exerted by each finger.  I sometimes put more or less pressure on one finger or the other, to see what happens to my shot.  As I increase the pressure on the bottom finger, I can feel the bottom finger pull in the string more.  Usually, I will work the three fingers back and forth a little as I'm settling in to my shot until I get to a distribution of pressure that feels right to me.

I also shoot 3 under and don't use a deep hook when I'm shooting my lighter poundage bows.  I've never had any fingers slip off the string.

The only thing I can think of is maybe you aren't as aware of your bottom finger as you should be.  Or possibly you had some injury to it that caused it to be weaker than it should be.  In either case, maybe working it a little as you settle into the string might help.

i will try it next time out. thanks for the advice.  i was trying to concentrate on feeling the string with all 3 fingers but smack in the middle of a 3d shoot was a bad time to change and over think anything. i know i need more range time to work on it.

Not sure without seeing you shoot but make sure the palm of your hand is parallel to the string and not angling away.

Ken are you having a hard time holding with just 2 fingers? I switched to 2 fingers due to carpal tunnel in my hands. I shoot up to 65# without any trouble. I get much better release this way too as well as not torquing the string as much.

The third finger is really just there to stabilize the string. Only about 10% of the weight needs to be on this finger. Personally, I do not deep hook this finger at all as I do the first and middle finger but just keep the string sitting on the pad.

Problem might be the lighter weight bow.  With the heavy bow you force the pad of the finger into a "bloop" that is trapped ahead of the string.  The lower pressure of the lighter bow doesn't have the force to hold it in place and the finger slips.  You can use a thinner tab/finger stall or hook the string more (part of the reason a heavier bow is easier to get a good release with).

Ken, I had a similar problem which I fixed by gripping the string the way Welch shows in the accuracy factory. He presses his 3 fingers into his chest to make sure they are all even. Then he only uses the pads with no deep hook. I switched to his style & it helped me get better releases. Took some getting used to because I felt like I had less control of the string at first. Now I am comfortable with it. See you guys soon.
