i have been shooting my recurve for a year and im not sure what type of shooting i am doing. I was reading a thread about instintive, gap shooting and splatter vision shooting. When i go to shoot i swing up anchor i pause for around 1 second to steady myself then release. Im not looking directly at the arrow point when i am aiming my eyes are glued to my target. what kind of shooting is this? can anyone help me understand what style of shooting i am doing is it an early form of instintive shooting?

If you're not using any part of the arrow, or riser to aim and shoot, you are Instinctive shooting.
It's the fastest and easiest style of shooting there is.
Also it's not just a short range style, with the right shooting drills/exercises you can be quite accurate at any distance...
Also, there's no thinking involved so there shouldn't
be any chance you'll get that dreaded "target panic"..

o cheers BowsanAiros most instinctive hunters i have seen shoot don't hesitate at fulldraw like i do. i guess subconsciously im making sure im lined up is this normal in your experence?

I would also call it instinctive. A slight pause to make sure you have hit your anchor is good. There are so many variations of each style that there is no hard and fast rule for any of them.

Pausing or not has little bearing on whether it's instinctive shooting or not.

I pause for 2-3 seconds most times and I call myself an instinctive shooter. I have tried to look for the arrow point for gapping but just can't focus on it and still see the target. Just doesn't work for me. Instinctive is way easier for me.

o ok thanks guys for your help just out of interest can you tell me the other methods of shooting eg gap and splatter vision?

I've tried to shoot instinctive but just am unable to get the hang of it. I shoot three fingers under and I use the gap shooting method. I anchor and look down my arrow shaft, center the point of the arrow under the object I am shooting at, and depending on how far away I am from the target is how much of a gap I will have between the shaft point at full draw and the target. I will also hold anchor for several seconds while getting everything lined up

I've never heard of "splatter vision" so can't help there. There is instinctive, gap (and split vision -- gap and split are related), point of aim, face walking, string walking and of course the use of a sight system. A search here or on other websites will give a pretty good description of each method I think.

I shoot my bow like I do shotgun. I look down the shaft like a vented barrel. I shoot with 3 under to achieve a high knock right under my eye lash.. Proper back tension to hold at full draw and then a pull through release. I change to this after 28 years of shooting split and missing tons of animals. :(

Hey thanks guys The man that tought me to shoot my bow said i should shoot my bow like my shotgun so i have been but i guess with more time shooting my bow the faster and more accurate i will become.

In the 60s and 70s 3 fingers under was commonly referred to as Apache style or Apache draw.

I try not to use any reference when I aim and be as instinctive as I can. My problem is that I can do pretty good after about a dozen arrows or so but not at the beginning of the practice session.
