Title: Hitting the sleeve problem
Post by: Schafer on February 26, 2011, 06:23:00 PM
I was wondering what you guys do to avoid hitting your sleeve while shooting your bow. I tend to have it hit more towards my shoulder then my hand side of my arm.

Thanks,

Schafer

bend your elbow more. and hold your elbow out away from your body along with holding the upper part of your arm in line with the target. look at terry's form clock too. ruddy

I can't wear my beloved hoodie's when I shoot for this exact reason. Maybe you simply need to wear something different?

I would recommend opening up your stance a little.  Draw an imaginary line from your target to you.  (I assume you shoot right handed by your avatar picture.)  Put the toes of your left foot on that imaginary line, and put the heel of your right foot on it.

I used to shoot with a closed stance and had problems with string clearance, but when I opened my stance as mentioned it really helped.

When I'm shootin' (practicing) in cold weather, I've sometimes used those big rubber bands to "tighten" up my bulky sleeves to avoid any string "slap". A little bend in the bow arm, etc. (as ruddy says) would help mostly too.

Cut an old sleeve from a long sleeve t-shirt That was to small and pull it over the coat or sweat shirt.

Open your stance (move your bow foot back a little when addressing the target).  Find a few large rubber bands to hold ypur sleeve close to your upper arm.

When at full draw if you rotate your elbow & upper arm upwards/clockwise (if right handed)  it helps.  This is hard to describe  and it took a while to learn (my college archery coach taught me this)

Bend your elbow and rotate it a litle bit to the outside.

I use the top of an old sock to keep my sleeve back. I never hit my arm without sleeves, if you hit bare skin form might be an issue.

Loose fitting clothes can be a problem.Just wear a snug fitting outer layer or use two short arm guards, one on your upper arm and one on your forearm to keep bulky clothes out of the way.or wrap duct tape around your sleeve and chest( I know it sounds stupid, but it works)

If you are hitting your clothing...DON"T automatically alter your form!!!!  Alter your clothing 1st and see why you are hitting your cloths.

Check to see WHY you are hitting your clothing....if its because of baggy clothing,....you need to restrict it somehow and keep it out of the line of string travel.

Standing different to avoid the cloths is not the answer....as you might not have a choice on how you stand in the field if it is your cloths...if it is your form, then you will need to change....but don't change ANYTHING till you find out WHY you are hitting your sleeve.

Can you post a video of you shooting?

Without seeing you shoot ,this question is hard to answer.. You could be over extending your bow arm, causing you to hit high on your arm. A video would give us a better clue..
Like terry said check to see why you're hitting your clothing first..

If your Avatar is a picture of you ..
(My observation) It "looks like" your left shoulder is pointing outwards.(overextending) like i said, this could the reason you're hitting high on your arm...

I agree with Terry.  If your form works, don't change it, adjust your clothing.

Short sleeve button up shirts that I wear to work are my problem. Long sleeve shirts have tighter sleeves.  If I'm wearing a short sleeve, a couple of rubber bands keep the string from hitting the sleeve.

I'm reading this with interest. It only happens to me when I shoot my longbow. short sleeves, i whack my arm too.  I have good "clearance" with my recurve.

I just tie some prewrap around where the clothing is "flapping" to much and getting in the way and that takes care of the problem. If it's windy out when i'm shooting i will always hit my sleeves if i have something baggy on. The last thing you should do is think about your form, just take the easy way out and wear tighter clothes or tie your sleeve back.If your form works for you, don't change it.

I raised the brace height and it seemed to fix the problem
