Title: Gaps 3 finger under vs split finger
Post by: Steven_CO on March 06, 2011, 09:08:00 PM
Hey all.

Just wondered if any of the gap or instinctigap shooters out there might know how much "gap" difference they have at say a 30 yd range or so changing from 3 fingers under to split finger.

Or even, difference in point on range would be interesting to me, at least.

There are a lot of factors, of course, but I'd be interested in personal experiences.

Thanks.

Steven,  The gaps are very different for each shooter.  It is largely dependent on facial structure.  Generally, split finger for me will produce a point on distance of about 55 yards and a three under about 25 yards.  It is different for every shooter.  My gap at 30 is about 2.5 feet split and just a little over the bull for 3 under.  The ONLY way to find what yours are is to do the shooting and find what your gaps are.  FWIW your gaps in either method are more dependent on how you shoot than the equipment you shoot.

Thanks Moebow and understood.  I was just thinking about choosing a distance for longer ranges where I might change 3 under to split finger.  This helps.

As Moebow says it depends on anchor and facial structure. For instance my 3 under distance is 20 yards and my split finger distance is 35 yards. I shoot split normally though.

Steven,

I'll try to fill in a little of the detail, not covered in the above: Of course, the reason for the gap is because of the vertical difference between your aiming eye and your arrow nock. While gravity starts to affect the arrow as soon as it is released, the effects are so minimal in the first 15-17 yards that they can basically be ignored. For all practical purposes the bow is shooting "flat" over that distance. Therefore, the gap seen at those close ranges, which I visualize in inches at the front of my bow, is that distance between my eye and my nock, at my anchor point. So, if I switch from split to three under, that visualized gap is going to get smaller by the half inch to inch that my nock moves closer to my eye. Of course, as you move to longer ranges that means your point on with three under is going to be at a closer range than with split finger. I would think that it you're going to shoot three under for close ranges, that you'd want to switch to split finger at the range where you move beyond your three under point on distance? Of course, that's just my humble opinion, and as Moebow said, the only way to see what works for you is to shoot and experiment.

Good Shooting, and Have Fun!

Quite often, when people switch from split to three under, they will also change their anchor.  In that event, the point on distance may not change much, if at all.  As has been mentioned, the gap depends on the distance from your eye to the nock of the arrow, and if that stays the same, the gap doesn't change.

I made the switch from Longbow Split to Recurve 3 under in the Autumn, I kept the same anchor because the higher Anchor was causing string slap on my nose.

Longbow was double carbon limbs 45# with 460g wood arrow 4" feather, point on was 60y.

ILF Recurve carbon/foam limbs 45# with 330g carbon arrow 1.75 quickspins, point on is 55y

55 yards seems not very practical but I'm shooting IFAA Field out to 80 yards and it's a good point on for me, I have no issues with short range gaps.

hope this helps

What do you use for an anchor point, if you don't mind my asking?

Thumb web on jaw bone and index finger on cheek bone. The short range Gaps are big 27" at 20y but I'm so used to these Gaps it's not a problem, short range it's Split-Vision 20-45y and longer past 50y it's Gap or POA.
