I am very left eye dominant, and have known that from the start of my attemp at shooting traditional. But I am right handed and can't do much with my left. So I have been shooting a right handed recurve for about a year now with little accuracy. I thought surely it couldn't matter much.
So I went to the bow shop and talked to an older gentlemen who I knew shot traditional. In hopes of getting some help with my sloppy shooting. We got to talking, and just so happened he is a lefty and invited me over to his place to watch me and shoot a few of his left handed bows.
All I can say is WOW!!! That was the fix. I can actually hit what I was aiming at!! He was even kind enough to send me home with a red wing hunter and arrows to shoot for a few weeks to make sure I was going to be ok shooting left.
I love this trad thing!!!!!

Ky, Congratulations on the discovery. Many folks get so convinced that "handed -ness" has to do with how we perform in sports. Many "right handed" golfers would be much better playing that game "left handed" too. Putting the arrow on the string is as close as you come to needing dexterity. Hand eye coordination often has nothing to do with what hand we write with.
Anyway, now that you've tried shooting lefty, I bet you will progress faster than you ever thought possible.

Glad that's working out for you.
Red Wing Hunters are nice bows. It may spoil you. :archer:

That was a nice older gentleman. Try to develope a friendship with him as he will be a wealth of knowledge. Just remember, friendships work both ways.

Reddogge, I agree. And knowledgeable he is. I stayed at his house for a couple of hours... showed me how he knapps out arrowheads, his arrowhead collection, all his bows from recurves to selfbows and all the stories that went along with them. I feel very blessed to have met someone who is so knowledgeable but yet so sharing and helpful.

KyStickbow, I too stuck with shooting right handed for FAR too long. I also have a VERY dominant left eye. I knew as soon as I shot 3 arrows that I was going to permanently switch to shooting left handed. I was amazed at how quickly the switch became natural... only took a about 2 days. I could do well in by backyard shooting right handed, but I was making mental adjustments that I was not aware of cuz I had done it so much, however in the woods and hunting situations, my shots were way off. Wish I had gone lefty early in my archery life. Good luck, glad you have such good people who will help. Trad people are the best.

I hope you returned the favor and introduced him to Trad Gang.....if he's not already a member of course. Doesn't matter where you go.....folks who shoot traditional are just "that kind of people".

I made the switch from left hand to right.
Any intrest in a bow trade?
