I just got back into traditional archery after a long stint with wheels and pulleys. I picked up a very sweet shooting 66" Protege longbow and have been shooting three under. I have about a 30" draw and will be shooting a 62" recurve if that matters.
I started in the sport shooting trad gear back in the 70's. Even taught archery as a full time staffer for three years at a Boy Scout Summer camp. I learned to shoot one over two under. Doing some research it seems there's a lot of advantage to the 3 under release for a longbow. Just wondered if it works for the recurve or should I go back to the one and two for the recurve only, longbow only or both.
Thanks for your opinions!

Which ever one you chose to shoot stick with it no mater which type of bow you shoot. Also its what ever works best for you as to split or three under. Myself i use three under
-
It works for recurve.I shoot all mine 3 under
-
I was shooting three under when I converted from wheels to trad. Shoot my first recurve that way, but wen to split again when I got a longbow and lowering he arrow a finger width seemed to make trajectory on distance shots better. It also felt more natural since that was how I learned back in the 80's.
-
I shoot recurves three fingers under. My recurves that weren't tillered for three under needed the nock raised a little bit to compensate.
-
I'm shooting my recurves three under. I learned and grew up shooting split so it doesn't really feel natural yet. I went to three under mainly because every fall my fingers start to split and bleed on the tips. It's much less painful to shoot three under than split. Both work and three under actually seems to give me a cleaner release, equal accuracy, and maybe a better "instinctive" shot at close hunting type distances.
-
Yep. I shoot recurves (Bear Takedowns) 3-under.
Cleaner release and better accuracy.
I have found that the double nock point, made with dental floss, helps accuracy, too.
-
Joebuck showed me three under and I shoot it on both recurve and longbow. Now, I can't even hit the dang target with split!!
-
3 under here
-
I shoot everything 3 under, recurves and longbows. It makes no diff.
-
The Apache style will work with either type of bow regardless if the bow was tillered for it or not.
You may want to foo;l around with nock height etc and do be sure and use two nock points, one above and one below. I shot split for less than a year back in the 60's and had an "old guy" tell me about this three under stuff. I switched and never looked back.
Get your anchor under your eye and you will be amazed..... Recurve or LB dont make a bit of difference
-
my buddy shoots 3 under. i shoot 1 over 2 below. we both shoot equally bad. haha
-
i switched to three under about six months ago, seems better to me, but seems like a little more "twang" to my bow string.
-
Yes, love it, will never shoot split again.
-
i had an "old guy" show me 3-under (Denny Sturgis Jr) and he had an even "older guy" show him (Rod Jenkins) It took awhile to get used to it. I changed every week. Now its the only way I shoot. ron

I shoot 3 under and felt great when I read that most of the best shooter shoot 3 under. Now we have something in common.

I changed after 30+ years of shooting split finger, now 3 under is all I can shoot. I would suggest getting a good 3under tab, Bateman makes a fine cordovan for around $11 at 3Rivers, I have one and 2 spares. I found I got much tighter groups, shot bette overall.
-
I shoot three under with my recurve no problem here, some people say its louder but I have a SBD string and silencers and I think my bow is really quiet my bow is also tillered for three under so that cant hurt either.
-
i just switched to 3 under and my groups have tightened up. feel like i can see my target better shooting 3 under. something i think with the arrow closer to my eye and hitting my anchor more consistently.
-
I shoot three under with my recurves. Bateman 3 under tab is the ticket for me... (http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx116/wrvburg2002/morrisonshot.jpg)...Randy

Can't be done.

I shot split for 2 years with a recurve. I changed to 3 under to bring my arrow closer to my right eye, thinking this would really improve my consistency. I worked on it for a month and went to a 3d tournament and shot 2 points higher than I shot previously.
I would pick what feels best and stick with it. I don't believe either is superior. For me it did change my point of view a lot when shooting, which took a lot of relearning. I won't ever change again.

Can't be done!

No! Don't! You Can't shoot a recurve 3-UNDER!!!! And I hear that, in certain states you can't shoot 3 under at all and if you do the Sheriff of Nottingham will throw you in the Dungeon and not even Robin Hood and his band of merry men can free you!!! :smileystooges:
Funny this topic comes up, I myself tried 3-under yesterday after shooting with another local trad guy who shoots that way and I have to say I felt like I was a bit more accurate, got the fat lip to prove it (gotta figure out the right anchor for me). I did notice that I felt like I was developing a blister on my middle nice to see you-finger though. I was using a split tab with a spacer. Reckon I'll try to yank the spacer or try the glove. At first I felt like "gotta shoot split!" 3-under seems like I would be using the arrow to align it and that wouldn't be true instinctive but then again, accuracy IS the name of the game so I guess I should just get over my mentals :banghead: Dang that wall is HARD!!!!
Good convo me brudders!

Um...not to get into the "true instinctive" argument here but coming from a pitcher who has the elbow to prove it even throwing a baseball is a learned behavior.
As for three under...for me, from day one it was always easier and more accurate. Plus I NEVER worry about pinching the arrow or pushing on the nock with my fingers during my draw.
I still anchor with my index finger in the corner of my lip so the arrow is what...3/4 of an inch closer to my eye?
Go with what works best for you.

Went to a 3-D today because I like the challenge of looking for my arrows on the wrong side of the target. I shot 3-under for the majority of 28 targets and was pretty satisfied with my shooting. Seems that I might be a nock pincher when it comes to split finger. OK That's me. Only you can control your destiny, grasshoppah. You will decide what works best for you, I say give it a try and see what YOU think.
By the way, my wife kicked my arse on the shoot. I am not ashamed.
