Title: Dominant Eye & Cross Shooting
Post by: Tim on August 29, 2011, 09:57:00 AM
For those of you that cross shoot....or shoot right handed with a left dominant eye or vise versa.

Have you found shooting split finger or three under to be more consistant?

Tim I could see a huge difference when I went 3 under. I don't know if the cross-handed had anything to do with it, but I shoot great now. I tried to listen to everyone and switch to south-paw, but I stunk. I kept myself right-handed, squinted more, and switched to 3 under. The proof for me is in 3D scores in hunting prep (do very well) and dead critters (blessed there). Good luck   :campfire:

i have always shot 3 under, being right handed and left eye dominant it just seems much easier for me  I have tried the split finger but never could shoot well. just didnt feel right

Tim, I shoot right handed but am left eye dominant due to an accident at work 8 years ago that resulted in me losing the vision in my right eye. I shoot split finger and have no problem shooting consistently. I've tried shooting 3 under just couldn't make it work for me.

Thanks Guys,

I'm a right by nature but have shot left handed due to an eye issue for the past 20 plus years.  Right handed has always felt more comfortable and more solid.  I switched to right handed a year ago and haven't had any issues with accuracy but I just got to thinking about how others do it.

Tim,
I'm right eye dominant. I can shoot both right & left handed, but am a much better shot as a lefty......99% of my shooting is left handed.

I've always shot split fingers with acceptable results hunting. I learned years ago that I can't compete with the 3 under shooters. Being cross eye dominant proly doesn't have much to do with that fact....LOL

Shooting bows is the one and only thing I am able to left handed.

It would seem to me that placing the arrow right under the eye, as most three-under shooters do, would give a mechanical advantage to that eye, regardless of which is the dominant eye.  And that advantage might be large enough to overcome the dominant eye if it is not the eye that the arrow is placed under.  With a lower anchor, shooting split fingers, it's more difficult to do, i.e., the dominant eye will tend to take over. Have absolutely no scientific evidence that this is the case, but seems to make sense.   :dunno:

Hey Jerry....that's what kind of got me thinking.  Just on a whim I decided to try a few shots three under and I noticed right away that my sight picture improved.  Even though it's not under my dominant eye, it didn't seem to matter and the sight picture improved.

Mr. Tim, I have done extensive research on this subject and have concluded that shooting a PINK string greatly enhances one's accuracy and completely eliminates the problems associated with cross eye shooting!!   :archer:

Seriously though, you have awesome shooting form as a righty. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for you.

I'd better not open my mail tomorrow and find one of "those" strings Mr. Schafer!   My silver tip wouldn't know how to act.

Thanks for the compliment on the form.  I think I'll leave well enough alone and stick to what works.   I'm REALLY liking this new bow!     :goldtooth:

does your dominant eye matter if you shoot instintive?  whouldn't your brain just make the adjustment for you?  maybe i'm missing the boat...

I think that starting out shooting with the arrow under your dominant eye is better.  Howard Hill shot off his non-dominant eye and he had just a touch of success shooting a bow and arrow.
