Title: Hitting my arm
Post by: D on November 27, 2011, 09:03:00 PM
I'm sure that this question has been asked a hundred times but I'm gonna ask again.  What is the main reason I'm hitting my bow arm.  Everything else in my draw feels great.  I'm anchoring good, got back tension but am just hitting my arm.  I hit where I am looking (for the most part).  Its just a curious question any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

D,  Check out the "grip question" thread below on this forum for a suggested hand position (see the pictures).  Also with that grip you might check to see if your bow arm elbow is rotated inwards so the joint is vertical to the ground (the point of your elbow pointing toward the horizon behind you.)  This may help you get better string clearance with your arm.

Thanks Moebow.  It doesn't hit hard and I wear a leather guard so I don't feel it much but I look down and the guard and I see the scuff on the leather.  Thanks again I'll check out.

Let us know how it works out and if we can help more.

Elbow should have this orientation, that may help with string clearance.

I actully think I am letting my elbow rotate down.  If it ever quits dumping stinking rain I'll get outside and try it out.  Thanks again.

I had, and occasionally still have, the same problem you have, D.

For me, it's a simple fix IF I remember to do things correctly.  When I hit the armguard, it's because my elbow is down at 5 or 6 o'clock.  (I'm a lefty.  For a right-handed shooter, it would be 6 or 7 o'clock.)

When I rotate my arm so that the elbow is at 3 o'clock (that's 9 o'clock for a righty), the problem  goes away.

That's all there's to it.  Hope that helps.

Mark

Agreed: low elbow.  My archery coach in college would walk behind and poke us with an arrow tip in the underarm to get us to twist the elbow around vertically.

Feels unnatural - but I don't hit my arm.
