I normally shoot at around 15 to 20 feet. Is this a good range for hunting white tail deer?
-
Did you mean yards?
I practice anywhere from 10 to 35 yds.
-
yes actually thank you. Im new to trad hunting just making sure thats in the range of a good shot. Thank you for the reply

Depends. ANY practice pulling & releasing your bow & arrow is good. IMHO, varying distance & angle is the best way to practice for hunting situations as in stumpshooting often.
-
I agree with straitera. Vary the distance fro 8 - 35 yards, but shoot deer where you feel most comfortable and accurate.
-
Depends on shooting style. I shoot instinctively I almost never know the yardage and try to change the distance after each round of arrows. I found this to be the best way of improving my shooting I shoot typically between 5-50 yards.

John - have you ever shot any 3D tournaments? There are several monthly tournaments here locally....Seward Junction, Austin, Bastrop, and the occasional Traditional Bowhunter's of Texas shoots. These are great practice and the yardage of shots can run from 5 - 25 yards for the most part.
If you'd be interested in joining several of us locals to shoot please send me a PM or email me at [email protected], we're always interested in having fellow tradgangers join in with us.

I like to shoot as far back as I can. I would never take a 40 yard shot on an animal (well, I can think of a few occassions), but, when I practice and can hit regularly at 40 it makes those 17 yard shots feel incredibly close.

Like others said I practice at longer ranges sometimes.50-75 yards while stumping. I don`t own a target. I shoot judos all year for practice and broadheads in a dirt bank for my first shot of the day usually. When I set up on a food source or crossing for deer if cover permits I set up for a 10 yard shot. My shot to kill/recovery ratio is very good.RC

John- As the other said, any range or structured practice is good. I honestly think that the best practice is few steps away from target and working on form one arrow at time the best. Then starting at 15 yards and grouping them and staying there till all in bull, then moving back two steps. Keep doing this till you get to the range you want. Once a week, i will just work on shot angles and/or kneeling, laying down and behind shot. I do shoot 40 and 50 yards at archery range just to see where my form is, and to know what "my arrow is doing at 30 yards". i also am a firm believer in stump shooting, close's think to stalking pratice I know. Main thing have fun, do it structured and don't create bad form.

I think 20 yds is standard, but I also practice at different distances during each session. When I first started, I shot at 15 yds only, just to get my form together. I want to get consistent at 40 yds, even though I might not take a shot that far (that seems far for me). The further you are, the more time that animal has to move out of the way. Cheers

I practice between 5-25yds. most times at different positions, and angles but this thread reminded me of this old adage;
"target shooting is when you see how far you can get from the target and still hit the bullseye, hunting is when you see how close you can get and never miss your mark"

28 yrds

I shoot at all different distances, 5 to 30 yrds without walking it off, I don't range it I just walk and palce a target and then shoot, and walk to and from to change it up.
